The BCS system is terrible, and holds college football back.

The BCS is designed to keep the money, and power with a small portion of schools that currently have both, parity is the last thing they want because it exposes how poorly designed and corrupt the system is. Bill Hancock is a used car salesman trying to pass a Pinto off as a Porsche.

Division 2 can do it Division one has more resources and ability to do it as well we (College Football Fans) are being held hostage by a few conferences. The SEC and ACC both already voted for a +1 model, but it was voted down by the other BCS conferences because they are afraid to prove it on the field. The last thing anyone from the Big 12, Big Ten, PAC-10 and Big East (Especially the Big East) want is a chance for the smaller schools to prove they belong.

The Big 12 is now going to be a joke, they will be just as top heavy as the MWC was going to be before BYU left. Three good teams and the rest bottom feeders. Texas, OU, and every other year Texas Tech or Oklahoma State. A flat out joke but they are not going to have thier automatic bid revoked. Because they are already in the club and they help keep out anyone they don't like.

In short its time for a PLAYOFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!

just "a playoff" isnt enough. we need MAJOR changes to keep college FB fair/relevant/exciting

1. MAJOR conference realignment to make each conf.legit. we'll never get equal...but we can do better. if we have to, dissolve the big 12 and another conf & distribute the teams accordingly.

divide the 119 teams into appx 8 conferences.

2. have a COMPUTER generate schedules.
-keep your team's 2-3 SERIOUS rivalries
-keep your basic in-conf. games, as best you can
-let a PC program (partly influenced w/ coach/reporter polls) determine OUT of conf games.
So a Boise would be scheduled to play 2-3 TOP 25 teams out of conf if their INconf teams suck...as usual. And Bama, who often plays numerous ranked INCONFERENCE games would not feel the need to risk it all for a penn state game like saturday!

3. set up an 8 team playoff, 1 from each conference.
RANK the conferences 1-8 and set up your playoffs based on rankings
1v8, 2v7, etc..

rotate final game locations like the SuperBowl

4. use your final polls to play the rest of the "bowls"
#9v#10, #11v12

5. Divide bowl $ based on # of games ur CONFERENCE wins.
more wins=more

You obviously agree then that the BCS is B.S. and is holding College football back.

The NCAA march madness tourney is a huge money generator for College Basketball, and everyone pays attention to it not just b-ball fans. Think of all the people in your work environment who participate in brackets that know nothing about sports.

The recent Conference shakeup that is ruining College Football rivalries is because of the way the BCS is setup, if there was a playoff your conference would be less important.

The BCS also is what has created the controversy of Boise State possibly playing for a national championship after only beating VT and Or. St. without having to go through your beloved SEC. So if Alabama has just one loss this year and watches the National Championship from the familiar confines of the Sugar Bowl there is only the BCS to blame.

A playoff would allow a conference like the SEC to show off its "superiority" by having more than one team advance to the final just like the Big East, and the ACC do with Bball. You can't tell me you wouldn't just wet yourself over the thought of Alabama playing LSU for the title. THE BCS IS FAIL

but if you JUST have a playoff HOW WILL THE TEAMS BE DECIDED?
your plan is more of the same. Boise will be a top ranked team bc of their WUSS SCHEDULE

You have to create a way to make their schedules more balanced. That way a Bama doesnt play an SEC schedule AND play teams like Penn State. Hence, my above idea.

And you have to balance conferences better...hence, my above idea.

You cant just have a HUGE 64 or 32 team playoff...it would take WAY too long. The ncaa needs a SHORT playoff system. 8 teams = 3 weeks. DONE!

and like i said , you could still rank all the other teams and play #9v#10 in the outback bowl...#11v#12 in the Hooters Bowl....etc...

to keep the money alive you could also call the playoff games by "bowl names".
The Pac-10 champ vs SEC champ can play in the Rose Bowl or Sugar Bowl or whatever.

College FB needs major overhaul , not just a playoff system that takes the top X number of teams. The NFL dominates pro sports with a system of divisions. ncaa can do the same with 8 Super Conferences. 1 champ from each conference.

That way Boise cant hide in a weak conf. They might have Oklahoma or Notre Dame or TCU to play every year.

College football doesnt need to keep the bowl names to keep the money, the sponsors will flock just like they do for the tourney.

Your never going to be able to force the teams to balance out the conferences all you can do is put a tourney together and have a selection commitee just like you do for the Bball tourney. Every year they make thier selections, and for the most part people agree, there is always some debate about which "bubble" teams got shafted but nothing like the bile encrusted arguments that have come out of SEC country over Boise State.

The playoff needs to be longer than just 8 teams 16-20 teams 20 teams would give the four number 1 seeds a bye, and would still make the regular season important. It would also solve the problem of the big schools avoiding little schools like Boise State, BYU, TCU etc., because the danger of a loss to a mid major team wouldn't be so dangerous to thier national title aspirations.

Because its not Boise hiding. Big schools wont schedule them

They would be rewarded by better RPI even in a loss. That way we would still see great preconference games like VT and BSU anyone who watched the game knows that it was a great game.

1. Boise JUST became legit. One upset over Oklahoma does not a true contender make.
FYI...schedules are made Y_E_A_R_S in advance. So the Bamas and Texas' of the world couldnt schedule little ol Boise if they were trying to schedule a RESPECTABLE foe.

2. if you have a "committee" pick then throw out the regular season. the HEART of college FB
the "committee" will ignore records and look at things like injuries. They'll say "well, Big State lost their QB so they arent as good anymore".

3. If you add any more than 8 teams your playoffs will last all thru xmas and into late january! think about it! they play 12 regular season games...they dont need to play SIX playoff games!

an 8 team playoff = just THREE 3games for your champ

you know they would want to keep the "bowl" names.
so name each playoff game a major "bowl"

then, you can keep your minor bowl games and play #9v#10, and so on

4. i addresses the schedules. LET A COMPUTER do it.
make it as even as possible, so nobody can whine.

"The BCS is designed to keep the money" Yes, but not that simple. They arrived at this deal because they had to get the teams that participated in lucrative Bowl games to agree.

September 8, 2010  06:27 PM ET

and i agree with u about the playoff, i think most people do

Quit arguing in the comments...I'd take this but I'd be attacked for an easy win...

what an original TD idea

Go Cubs.

September 8, 2010  06:46 PM ET

There are now 34 bowl games. So 68 out of the 120 programs get to go bowling. Wasn't getting invited to a bowl game a reward for a good or great season? No 6-6 team should ever get an invite. Sending a .500 team to a bowl game is nothing more than rewarding mediocrity.

Exactly, do we really need to see New Mexico play Anywhere State in the New Mexico bowl does anyone outside of New Mexico even care?

I haven't seen one for a while and with all the BCS conference fans whining about Boise State I thought it was relevant

But you forget the adage amongst the faithful: 6-6 in the SEC is better than 13-0 anywhere else. After all the SEC teams are better than most NFL teams aren't they? The SEC players can leap tall buildings in single bound and therefore all SEC teams belong in bowl games.

Now ah thank ah'll go back in mah trailer and watch hee-haw.

We might be in for a disturbingly pro-SEC rant from the Bear.

It definitely would be an easy win. You've left logic holes big enough for a truck.
