Miami will regret letting Culpepper go.

Culpepper is not far removed from his MVP type season (69% completions, 39 tds, 11 ints) and would have likely won it had Manning not thrown 48 tds that year. He rushed himself back from his knee injury and it showed, but Miami gave up on him too early.

I expect him to put up reasonable numbers in Oakland and then get far, far away from them and take over some other starting job next year.

137 passing TDs, 30 rushing, to only 89 interceptions, with a 64% completion rate. Two bad years barely put a dent in his numbers. The guy is not washed up.

Next year, Miami will be starting inexperienced John Beck, or a very old Trent Green, and their decade-long QB search will have to start all over again.

The time between Culpepper outstanding 2004 season and now might not be that long, but it's one helluva long drive.

Pep played through the first half of week 7 in 2005, and he was easily the worst starting quarterback in football. He had 11 turnovers to just six touchdowns, and the Vikings were 2-5.

He took 31 sacks, and held a league-lowest 72 passer rating before the injury.

So what did Culpepper do that off-season? Train at the Vikings facilities? Get to know the new offense of coach Brad Childress? Get ready for the season?

No, no and no. He refused to come back to Minnesota (when team doctors went to check on his progress, he took them to a Wal-Mart parking lot to do agility drills), didn't meet with Childress and openly demanded a contract extension.

He said his knee was ready, and obviously it wasn't, as his horrific numbers continued in Miami. He's again saying his knee is ready, but I think we're calling shenanigans on him this time around.

So...if by being back to form you mean being a clueless, sack-taking anti-product, then I say, sure. But that's not Miami's problem any more.

Culpepper's a nut, for sure, but that doesn't make him a bad football player. Part of his problem is that he thinks a little too highly of himself. I think him signing with Oakland means he's learned to swallow his pride. He knows this is his last chance to show he's got something left before the NFL forgets him.

Culpepper's dip in numbers corresponds to Randy Moss leaving his offense. He relied a little too heavily on Moss to bail him out if the play broke down. It's taken him a while to adjust to not having a superstar reciever to throw to, but he should be able to handle it by now.

He said his knee was ready, and maybe he thought it was at the time. It wasn't. He wouldn't step into his throws enough and it threw his timing way off. But he's not doing that anymore. All he needs to do in Oakland is show anything resembling his old self, and he'll be the starter next year in Atlanta or anyplace that decides they've had enough of their current guy.

Meanwhile, Miami still doesn't have much of a plan at QB, and surely they have loads of dead cap-space on their hands now too.

The Dolphins drafted BYU QB John Beck in the second round, how is that not planning for the future? You said all he has to do is return to his old self, and he'll find a place to play next year. That doesn't exactly make me think Miami is going to miss him. They just drafted their future. They're preparing for life after Culpepper, and they're not losing sleep over it.

Pep is not a nut. Lawrence Taylor used to chew glass when he got bored at the bar, and scaled the side of his college dorm. HE'S a nut.

Culpepper is just a rock head.

The only time he wasn't is when he was led by one man for one season. He was a decent quarterback for part of the time he was in Minnesota, but it's obvious the biggest influence on his career was offensive coordinator Scott Linehan. Under his guidance, Culpepper dropped his INTs from 23 in 02 to 11 both in 03 and 04. Linehan left for the offensive coordinator job in Miami the next season, and Pep had 12 INTs (correction from first argument) through seven games.

Basic math: No Linehan = more TOs if Pep is under center.

Beck is already 26. He won't be starting until he's 27. If he doesn't get good fast, it'll already be too late for him. How long will it take him to get up to speed reading NFL defenses after coming from the WAC?

Miami reaches for a quarterback every year. See: Jay Fiedler. Brian Greise. AJ Feeley. Gus Frerotte. Somehow, I doubt their quarterback evaluation ability.

The only guy they brought in with any pedigree was Culpepper, and they let him go after a year. The cycle goes on and on, and the only constant is that Miami stinks and doesn't win any playoff games.

Within the next few years, Culpepper will win some playoff games, and Miami won't. That's why they'll regret it.

Yeah, well, Culpepper's 30 years old, and he sucks right now.

So Beck will start mixing fiber in his diet before he'll be a starter. Big deal. Culpepper is still mixing codeine with his pancakes just to get out on the field. But I agree with you, and heavily doubt the Dolphins' ability to evaluate the QB position. That's why they traded a second-round pick for a guy who played four games, and had the mobility of the Golden Gate Bridge when in the pocket. What was his name again?

But just like Jay Fiedler, AJ Feely, Brian Griese and Gus Frerotte, the Dolphins won't miss Daunte Culpepper one little bit. I merely said they were planning the future with Beck, I didn't say he was going to be the best BYU QB since Steve Young.

In the meantime, Steady Not Sexy Trent Green can hold down the fort until they figure something else out. There are far worse situations to be in. I mean, Oakland still hasn't even gotten Culpepper's replacement into camp yet. Maybe THEY will miss Culpepper next year when Culpepper Jr. takes over, I don't know, but Miami will be just fine.

Great arugment by cooz. (iron curtain)

Miami will actually be patting themselves on the back for dumping Culpepper.

Culpepper wont be anywhere near his 2004 form this season in Oakland. I dont believe he will EVER get back to that form.

Thank you Mac Hetfield, I will be getting into that in my next argument.

Miami did the right thing in drafting Beck, for both them and Culpepper. Green was brought along to manage the season, granted both of them have health concerns, Green's isn't past isn't as extensive as Culpepper. Either way, neither quarterback would play the role of starter for more than a year, then it's the year of Beck in Miami.

Sorry Cooz. Didnt mean to do that...

Should I be offended? That isn't really offending me... And that is messed up on your part.

Report Offensive Comment

You've said worse.

I'm gonna stop now.

Report Offensive Comment

The question isn't whether or not Oakland will be happy, Spell! It's about whether Miami will regret it.

Of COURSE Oakland will be happy! Andrew Walter is one of the few statistically worse QBs than Pep over the last two years!

If I wasnt offending you, then why did you say that it wasnt offending you and then say "That is messed up on your part".

Sounds like you were offended.

And for that, I apologize...

See, I said I was sorry. Dont fret.
