Why is he overrated? First of all he isn't even rated that high. If anything he is underrated, but that's not the argument. Can you give me some good reasons why Rudi Johnson is overrated? Take a look at his stats. He looks pretty darn consistent to me. There are plenty of RBs in the league that wish they could put up his numbers over the last three seasons.

Yes, he's put up 4221 yards and 36 TDs in 3 years, but look at the offense he's in.

The Bengal's are a throw-it-down the field offense. Teams know this, and can't stack the box.

Yet Johnson only has 4.06 YPC over these 3 years, and 3.8 the past year.

4.0 YPC used to be where you wanted to be, but nowadays it's more 4.4 or 4.5. Look at the top rushers last year. Tomlinson had over 5, LJ had 4.3, Jackson had 4.4, Gore had 5.4, Westbrook had 5.1, Barber had 5.1

Johnson had the lowest YPC out of all the top 10 rushers.

Against Indianapolis, one of the worst rush defenses of all time last year, Johnson had a 3.6 YPC average and 79 yards. Far from their 5.3 YPC average.

He also fumbled it 6 times.

In short, all his success is due to the Bengal's offensive system.

His YPC is not as high as the other guys because they are all faster RBs than him. Rudi Johnson is a work horse.

You make it seem like he has good stats because of Carson Palmer and Chad Johnson. Don't you think the passing game benefits from running the ball?

Oh and the Bengals do not pass as much as you say. Rudi had 361, 337, & 341 carries over the last three seasons. He pretty much carries the load in Cincy. If he had a solid backup spelling him from time to time then he would have a higher YPC.

12 TDs in each of the last 3 seasons is far from overrrated.

Cincinnati was 14th in Pass Attempts per game. More than half the league. Therefore, they pass more than half the league.

That being said, they were 20th in Rush Attempts.

And you say he has a lower YPC because he's slower?

Corey Dillon has been a power back his entire career. He actually managed to get 4 seasons over 4.6 YPC. He has a career average of 4.3 YPC - 0.2 higher than Johnson's over 1347 more carries.

And Rudi sets up the pass? No. It's like Indianapolis. It's an amazing system. Indy didn't even miss a step with the loss of Edge. Both Indy and Cinci pass to set up the run. Cinci takes like 5-6 shots downfield a game. Don't you think that'd more the backers back a bit and the safety's back as well?

And also. . .Rudi's longest run in 2006 was 22 yards (which just so happens to be Cinci's longest run of the year). . .only one team did worse (Arizona, understandably). . .even Detroit and Oakland had longer runs (52 and 59 yards, respectively).

And I won't even get started about how he can't catch.

and yes, 36 TDs in 3 years IS overrated if it's because of the system you're in.

If his success is because of the system he is in, then just about everybody's success is due to the system they play in. Come on now.

Good players have other good players around them. Can you name a better RB that was on a team with a worse record? I don't think so.

I know he isn't the best RB in the league. Not even top 5, but the Bengals could do a lot worse at the position. At least half of the league would love their RB to put up over 1,400 yds and 12 TDs consistently over three seasons. Steven Jackson plays in a great offense, would you call him overrated? No, he puts up numbers because he is good like Rudi Johnson.

Once again, Rudi Johnson is not overrated b/c he is not a highly rated RB in the first place.

Frank Gore: Look at the mess of an offense he was in. No real crazy threats at WR, their "superstar" TE broke his leg, and their offensive line was crap. Yet this guy (not being really fast in the first place), puts up 1695 yards and 5.4 YPC

And no, it's not every RB. Like I said, Frank Gore, Johnson (0 threats at WR the last few years), Tomlinson (that offense is centered around him - teams could mostly stack the box because all they had was Gates, and they didn't get a good O-line until recently) are not the products of system.

Indy proved it this year that any RB placed in that system can do well. Unless Edge proves otherwise this year by doing good in Arizona, I will believe that any RB placed in an offense such as the Colts or Bengals is overrated based on the fact that teams are more worried about giving up the bomb than the running game.

His YPC last year (3.8) was abysmal, 2005 was okay (4.3), and 2004 (4.0) was very, very average. His career YPC is very average (4.1).

And I'm not talking overrated in how people rate him. He's overrated in terms of the success he gets because any RB placed in there would be good, if not better.

Guys like LT, LJ, Frank Gore, Shaun Alexander, and a few others usually get rated higher than Rudi Johnson.

August 29, 2007  04:15 PM ET

Look at his ypc, compare him to the guys you mention, then come back.

August 29, 2007  04:17 PM ET

Rudi has a career 4.1 ypc (quite, quite average) and is a terrible receiving threat.

August 29, 2007  04:18 PM ET

but hes not considered in the same categorie as those guys he mentioned so how could he get overrated

August 29, 2007  04:18 PM ET

Rudi Johnson is a good running back. Boarder line Top 10. How he is overrated I don't know because I don't usually hear people hype him up.

August 29, 2007  04:19 PM ET

rudi is a beast from the eaast

"Against Indianapolis, one of the worst rush defenses of all time last year, Johnson had a 3.6 YPC average and 79 yards. Far from their 5.3 YPC average. "

Larry Johnson rushed 13 times for 32 yards and 2.5 yards per carry. Thats even worse

August 29, 2007  04:23 PM ET

cuz someone had a bad game they are overrated

August 29, 2007  04:24 PM ET

Larry Johnson also had a record 416 carries and Indy's D suddenly stepped it up inthe playoffs

August 29, 2007  04:30 PM ET

August 29, 2007  04:37 PM ET

August 29, 2007  04:47 PM ET

August 29, 2007  04:50 PM ET

im not sayign he isnt but thats not the argument

August 29, 2007  04:51 PM ET

a guy getting 416 carries should shatter the single season records

August 29, 2007  05:34 PM ET

This is funny, I was in a throwdown before calling him underrated. I guess if someone thinks he is overrated and he isn't overrated, he most be underrated. Follow me?
