Who will win the 2010-2011 Hart Trophy as the NHL's MVP? That's what we're here to debate.
This TD is about picking the Finalists and then the Winner. Without further ado, here's who I've come up with. (in alphabetical order)
Sidney Crosby-Center-Pittsburgh Penguins.
Winner of the Hart in 2007 and a finalist for the award each of the last 2 years, Sidney Crosby continues to evolve and elevate his game to dizzying heights. He's gone from being primarily a set-up man to leading the League in goals last year.
Alexander Ovechkin-Left Wing-Washington Capitals
Winner of the Hart in 2008 and 2009 and a finalist last year, Alexander Ovechkin is an offensive juggernaut. A player of immense talent, he continues to grow into his role as the Captain of his team.
Jonathan Toews-Center-Chicago Blackhawks
Jonathan Toews showed last year that he is clearly an elite forward as evidenced by his winning the Conn Smythe Trophy as Playoff MVP and being named the top forward at the Olympic games.
My Winner?
Sidney Crosby
More to come. Good luck kingeraaa.

I'm going to use the same type format(alphabetical) for mine as well. Here goes!
1. Sidney Crosby- PIT- Pos C-
I have to have him on my list too! This kid is amazing, and for how young he is, and for what he has accomplished, not to mention last years success in the goal scoring dept. I would be crazy not to have him up here!
2. Evgeni Malkin- PIT- Pos C-
Here is where we are going to differ, as I think that Malkin is just as much of a threat for the Hart as Crosby is, and he's also got a Conn Smythe, so there is no questioning his big game. I think last year was a fluke season, and that he will rebound to the top of the pile this season.
3. Alex Ovechkin- WAS - Pos LW-
Again we have to agree here on this pick, as only a fool wouldn't pick A.O to repeat as a Hart winner with 2 already in pocket, along with always being in the running for the Art Ross, as well as the Maurice"The Rocket" Richard trophy. He plays hard, and needs to back off the questionable hits, but I think he is always going to be at the top barring injury.
Now the tough part.
Winner 2010/2011 Hart goes to......... Alex Ovechkin!
Good Luck LGP!
And
MTC as well!

Geno vs Toews
I thought about Geno as a finalist, but chose to look elsewhere b/c:
-Choosing 2 Penguins would have brought out all the whiners about homerism.
-Players from the same team detract attention from each other and I think Sid will do that to Geno.
-A huge problem I and other Pens fans have with Geno is his inconsistency. There are times he takes over a game, but unfortunately, there are times when he disappears as well.
-Geno has develped a problem with taking stupid retaliation penalties and is spending too much time the box. He had 100 PIMs in 67 games which was 20 more than his previous high and he played a full season.
Sid vs Ovie
Let me start by sayting BOTH are incredible players that we are LUCKY to see. Sid takes it this year b/c:
He is hungry for it. Don't be fooled, Sid is one of the most passionate and dedicated players in the game. When he sets out to improve a skill set, he does (note the increase in goals) and this offseason he worked on his skating.
Ovie has established himself, like it or not, as a repeat offender. His style of play makes him susceptible to injury and suspensions. Those missed games will cost Ovie here.

Geno Vs Toews.
Geno you DIDN'T pick, because you are scared that people will vote against you because you like the Pens, but then pick Crosby as the winner? Why would have mattered if you put him down? Then we would be having The Sid vs A.O debate only?
Malkin has already won a Calder scoring title, Smythe, and Cup. This kid can play, and last year was his 1st year not at the top. He will rise again, so don't you fool yourself.
Toews is a player that I love, as he is very well rounded,a great leader, and always shows up for the big games! However, when it comes to his regular season stats, he comes up a little short don't you think? I'm sure he'll get better in the regular season, but don't think he'll be in the nominees THIS year.
Sid vs A.O.
You said that Sid is hungry, and I agree, but A.O is accustomed to being at the top of the pile EVERY year, and is starting to show even more signs of using his team mates, and he's aware that his "antics" will be detrimental to his career, and legacy. IMO Ovechkin is hungrier to prove he IS the best scorer, and overall best player in the league in the regular season!
I love Crosby, but feel that A.O is just more hungry!
LGP: Pensational! said 10/06, 11:42 AM
Ovie is hungrier? Really? Was he hungrier after Sid won the Cup? Another early Playoff exit says he wasn't.
Ovie just wants to be known as the best--that's Ego. Sid wants to win a Cup and then individual awards--that's Passion and Tradition.
Ovie has Backstrom, Sid has Duipuis. Who's more valuable again?
"Antics?!?" Seriously?!? Antics are what the 3 Stooges perform. Ovie can be downright dirty, cheap even, and his continued "antics" will net him more suspensions. I say again, Ovie is a repeat offender and will only garner more suspension time with each cheap shot and have other players gunning for him.
Sid=Hart
Yes, Malkin can play and be one of the best in the game. But he has a bad bad habit of going on vacation...sometimes during a game, for a game or for a stretch of games. It's much harder to simply turn it on at will. Trust me, no one wants him to be the "old" Geno more than I, but I need see it before I'll believe it.
Toews star is burning very brightly right now. The Hawks were blown up in the offseason due to cap issues. When Toews leads his team to elite status again this year, do you think that fact will hurt him or help him?
Toews=Finalist
kingeraaa said 10/06, 04:56 PM
A.O has been a 50+ goal scorer 4 out the 5 years he's been in the league. He's won 2 Harts, 3 Pearson/Lindsay awards in a row (including last year). How could you not think this guy hungry? He's USED to being at the top EVERY year, and this yr won't be any different.
You have him as a finalist, and are now trying to convince that since he's had some questionable hits , that he WON'T win the Hart, but if that was the case, he wouldn't have won that last one, or last years Lindsay award, which is judged by NHL PLAYERS! He's not that dirty! BTW, A.O is successful in spite of Backstrom, not because of him. Sid has better guys to line with, but that's the coaches job!
I think A.O will get his 5th 50+ goal season, he'll win the Hart. Sid will be a finalist, but A.O will prevail.
Question? What does the Hart have to do with the SC?
Toews/Geno.
It's hard to get your mojo back once it's slipped away, but players of Geno's ilk do it, and I can see him doing just that, let's not pretend he was a 1 and done player. He does have a Smythe, so he has shown up to BIG games.
Toews, I love this kid, but don't think he'll get the #'s to win a Hart. Selke? Maybe, but no Hart!

If you were listing in alphabetical order, shouldn't Sidney have been last?

Do you really think a "big stretch" would win the Hart, or this argument for that matter?
It's certainly possible, but highly unlikely.

A Pittsburgher picking a Penguin...not much of a surprise there.
Nice to see a Pitt fan mentioning the Great 8 and saying some good things about him.
Are Pens fans allowed to say anything nice about Flyers players?

No. They are all dirty, classless players. Until they are acquired by the Pens of course. (see: Rick Tocchet, Mark Recchi, and Aaron Asham)

I heard Jeff Carter, Daniel Carcillo, and Scott Hartnell had an argument about which one was cooler and it turned into a big gay sex orgy.
Nothing good can be said about Philly.

Philly fans are hypocritical as all hell. They pride themselves on how badass and tough their team is and their city is, yet they are the first people to complain and point fingers when something questionable happens to one of their players.
It's really very annoying.

1st off,I,m in southern Ontario(yes,Philly has fans worldwide).I might joke about another teams fans, but only those that need to be ridiculed.
I don't group all fans from 1 city to be the same, there are obvious arses and others that are very knowledgeable fans.
Lastly,I don't bash other teams players(Crosby is very good) or put up excuses when the Flyers lose or something happens to one of their players.
AS far as the badass and toughness point,I,m 1 of the 1st to say that maybe the Flyers need to let Holmgren and his broadstreet bully mentality go.They have way too much talent on that team that the likes of Carcillo and Lappy should just play hockey.(They are both decent when they put their minds to just playing the game).

I will say though, I never understood the Pittsburgh vs Philly thing. For the Flyers/Pens it makes sense, but I don't hate the Eagles, Sixers, or Phils.

Knew that was coming, but I do have my reasons which will be explained in later arguments.
Just because I personally don't like Ovie doesn't mean hen isn't a great player.
No, we're not allowed to say anything nice about Flyers players. :) Although I don't see how that applies for this TD.
