When the US Hockey Team defeated the Russians in 1980, the world was in total shock. Even us Americans were in shock. The Russians were stunned. Nobody gave the Americans a shot. Not even us. Now I wasn't even born when this happened (I'm only 14), but from the stories my parents tell me, everybody was talking about it.

Id say that the saints winning their first home game was the greatest moment.. the tradgedy that was hurrican Katrina complete pulled New Orleans apart... the only thing that could bring them together was the Saints... and them putting up a W was even better... especially that blocked kick.. you tell me 2 years ago .. turn on CNN,MSNBC,ABC and just about every channel there were pictures of the destruction and people being rescued from thier (wat used to be ) home.. the saints gave them a reason to come back to new Orleans and rebuild their homes

Those are both great moments, and I knew someone was going to go at me with the Saints. However, when the US Hockey Team beat the Russians, it was DURING THE COLD WAR. US AND RUSSIA WERE RIVALS BACK THEN! THE US WAS CONSIDERING a BOYCOTT of the 1980 SUMMER OLYMPICS because RUSSIA WAS INVADING AFGHANISTAN! Eventually the US boycotted those Olympics because of the facts stated above.

The New Orleans are was DEVESTADED by Katrina.. 1,800 people died..thousands lost their homes... the saints played their home games in 3 different cities... The Superdome was turned from a football arena to a homeless shelter.. Lets not 4get the saints werent that good in the earlier years... thousands flocked back to new orleans to watch the saints game.... The Saints re-united new orleans .. the Saints provided hope for new orleans... the saints gave new orleans a reason.. the saints are new orleans

I do agree that that is one of the greatest moments in American sports history. However, it isn't the greatest. A week before the Miracle on Ice, the Soviets crushed us 10-1. Not only did this happened during the Cold War, but the PEAK of it, too. Like hyperRevue said, this united us. Lifelong rivals were talking about this like they knew each other since they were 3 years old.

As great a story as the Saints were, the don't even come close to US vs USSR in the middle of the Cold War. Katrina had so many bad feelings surrounding it, but The Miracle on Ice was 100% unifying. All of America was together for that.

Jesse Owens is probably #2 just because WWII wasn't as singular as the Cold War. **** ravaged Europe for years before the US got involved. The Cold War was singularly US vs. USSR, no one else.

Can I add Clay Buchholz's no-hitter to the list?

Apparently Hit-let gets censored. Weird.
Does Pol Pot?

Oh please. Don't even try to take away from that achievement. Just tip your cap and say good-game. Being a sore loser is just pathetic.

Who wasn't in the game?
All I see are two non regulars: S Moore and J House.

No way you can challenge the US hockey team. The Owens wasn't a big American sports one specifically, just sports. It would have been huge if he was from France or Russia. The US is the greatest moment in sports history.

Well, to be fair, it wasn't the peak of the Cold War. But it was still a big deal.
