He should be already at twenty wins. The indians just started shutting down while he pitched.
He has a 3.24 ERA 182 strikeouts while only walking 32 leads the league in innings pitched 211. Lastly his WHIP is only 1.16
How could he not be the CY Young winner. Not only that he has faced Johan Santana three times and has won all three of those and has faced Verlander twice in five days and won both of those how could that not put you at the top. In his past ten starts the most Earned Runs he has given up has been three while his team only won 4 of those for him. Like i said he should be at 20 wins right now. His era will only continue to go down as he keeps pitching. Look just at the numbers how is he not the CY Young for the AL.

rik Bedard says sup? In a lot less innings pitched, Bedard bests Sabathia in strikeouts 221 to 182. Though wins is an incredibly overrated stat, it's hard to deny Bedard's impressive total playing for such a garbage team. 13-5 on the Orioles is 18-3 on any other team. Bedard also has a lower ERA (3.16) and a lower WHIP (1.088) than crooked cap C.C. Bedard is definitely this year's AL Cy Young Award winner.

Yes but bedard is injured right now is he not. How can he be considered for that being ijured for at least three starts CC is a workhorse. He is the most valuable pitcher for on the best teams in baseball he has to be the leader for it. CC should be at 20 wins right now but his team hit a nut shell. CC will just continue to dominate till the end of the year. Isn't it all about giving your team the chance to win everytime you pitch and CC does that better than anyother pitcher this year.

C.C's work horse status is all well and good but I'd still take Bedard. More strikeouts, a better ERA, a better WHIP, a better FIP, and, despite having an equal amount of win shares, Bedard has a much better percentage (.925 to .860). Bedard has had a true breakout year and should be rewarded for it, and for having to deal with Peter Angelos, by winning the Cy Young Award.

As for giving his chance a team to win, Bedard has done nothing but that all year. He has gone at least 6 innings in every start except for 4 starts and has struck out at least five in every start but THREE, with seven double digit strikeout games. That is absolutely ridiculous. Only four times has he given up more than 4 runs which is also very good. If Erik Bedard were on just about any team aside from Baltimore, his numbers would be even more impressive.

who is rik Bedard? jk. this is tough. i'm torn right now. i have been thinking lackey for some time now.

you cant go by wins loses.
beckett gets 6.4 RPG
kaz gets half of that, is that his fault? I go by K to BB K/9 ERA WHIP and BAA its bedard

September 4, 2007  11:06 PM ET

depends on what you're looking for...if you want a SP that's 6th in ERA, 23rd in BAA, tied for 8th in WHIP, and 4th in Ks, then Sabathia is your man...

If you want 2 SPs that are top 3 in all 4 categories, then you pick between Bedard and Santana...

Or, if you want the ERA leader who is also 3rd in BAA, 3rd in WHIP, 8th in KS and leads everyone in quality starts, Haren is your man...

Sabathia, to me, isn't the pick

September 4, 2007  11:06 PM ET

Seriously.

I was watching SC this evening and they had a graphic of best pitchers since June 1 and all they listed were win/loss record. What a **** stat.

Good run support, for Aces, is 4 ER or more...3 or less is bad...

As of the 21st of August, he's some run support comparison...

I love how people are saying how if Sabathia had any run support, he'd have 18 wins already...disregarding the fact that Santana, Bedard and Haren are dealing with the same thing...in fact...

9 of the 27 games Sabathia has started his team has scored 3 runs or less...

Compare that to....

15 of the 26 games that Santana has started, his team scored 3 or less runs....

11 of the 26 games that Bedard has started, his team has scored 3 or less runs...

10 of 24 games Carmona has started, his team scored 3 runs or less...

10 of 26 games Haren has started where his team scored 3 runs or less

So, see, that Sabthia hasn't gotten run support argument is bull...especially compared to some of the others listed...

then, on the other end of the spectrum...

4 of 23 games that Beckett has started where his team scored 3 runs or less...

Remember, this info is a about 2 starts ago for each SP, but it shows the run support some of the aces are getting...I was just too lazy to go update it for what would amount to 2 more starts for each :-)

September 4, 2007  11:24 PM ET

don't get me wrong, i hate the win/loss argument but with a guy like Bedard, it can be taken into context. the dude plays for a horrible team and still has a good win total.

September 5, 2007  12:23 AM ET

I'm a big fan of Bedard but he's been on the shelf for the last couple starts and it might be longer. Sabathia's overtaken him and barring a strong finish from either Haren or Bedard has the Cy Young on lock.

September 5, 2007  08:53 AM ET

It's a damn shame he is sittin on the shelf too. i think this is the lone chance for him to get a Cy.

September 5, 2007  12:15 PM ET

If Sabathia wins, it'll be as big of a joke as Colon winning in 2005...

September 5, 2007  04:13 PM ET

dan haren for cy young

September 5, 2007  05:42 PM ET

You can't argue for C.C. based on lack of run support when Bedard is having a better season with fewer wins.

October 2, 2007  09:08 PM ET

beckett or santana will win cy young

October 17, 2007  04:20 PM ET

'If Sabathia wins, it'll be as big of a joke as Colon winning in 2005...'

I gotta take this back...I wrote the above statement at the beginning of September...he really ended up doing well...not sure he deserves it, but he definately should be in the discussion

October 17, 2007  04:24 PM ET

i don't even remember doing this. oh well.

October 17, 2007  06:05 PM ET

You should of named this throwdown CC will win the Cy Young. Because he will and anyone elses opinion is wothless. 2 people that know the game better than anyone,Tim Kurjian and Peter Gammons have both stated that Sabathia will win

October 17, 2007  09:22 PM ET

obviously he's going to but let's look at when this throwdown was started.
