When it comes to sports movies, there are a lot that come to mind, but i don't think there have been any that have hit me on a personal level more that Rudy. We all know the story, a kid with little to no athletic ability giving everything he has to play at Notre Dame and finally getting his chance.

I think it speaks to everybody, we all wish we had that chance to be in the spotlight, even for just a little bit, Rudy was such an inspiration not only for how he played football, but for how he lived his life, giving everything he had.

I would love to hear some good arguments on this one.

Rudy is a good sports movie, but there are many other movies out there that I would consider better acted and with a more meaningful storyline than Rudy. Since you chose a movie with a serious theme, I will stay away from sports comedies.

Million Dollar Baby - I admit, I only saw this movie once (it made it's impact for sure) and yet it's stuck in my head like I just saw this movie yesterday. I could feel the quality of the actors and the gut wrenching storyline that they portrayed, it leaves you quite emotionally empty.

Breaking Away - Remember when you were young and questioned your position in life? Can you even "break away" from the working class and make it to another level in society, bettering the next generation of your family? It ranked 8th in AFI's - List of America's 100 Most Inspiring Movies. The "Cutters" of Indiana versus the Upper Class, sort of reminds me of the Outsiders with a sports theme. It also inspired American Bicyclists.

Rudy is a good sports movie but it's not the Greatest, I'd have to rate a few more on the list before Rudy. MTC.

I have to admit i've never seen Million dollar baby, but with Rudy, it just speaks to every boy in America, and in an essence captures the American dream. It is just the fantasy of everybody growing up and playing football in the backyard, the only movie that comes a close 2nd to Rudy is The Sandlot (another great movie for another conversation)

I really just think you can't beat when they start chanting Rudy Rudy Rudy! and he finally gets to play, that will bring a grown man to tears, and then when they carry him off the field and the janitor (who earlier talked him into staying on the team) is overwhelmed by emotion, just a great movie.

There are other movies that should go before Rudy as FN has generously commented. Here are 2 movies from the Comedy side of life that are considered greater than Rudy.

Here is another movie that is better than Rudy as a drama.

The Natural - Every time this movie is on TV I end up wanting to watch it, a very special movie that uses what is good & bad about baseball and translate it to life in general. Remember your youth, you always had a favorite bat, like "Wonderboy" or a glove and the belief that this is your day of glory? You have to believe in miracles.

Pure exhilaration.

A rare gem that should be watched again is a movie entitled One On One. I grew up playing basketball & this movie shows what perseverance & honor really means. A small town hero learning the cruelty of Big-Time College ball. My favorite line is regarding the player's scholarship, "Sir? All the way up with a red-hot poker. I can play anywhere I want now."

Rudy is not the Greatest after all.

Well, great argument, looking at it now, it is a discussion that probably should be split in two. Those two categories being serious and comedy. With all that being said, I still think that Rudy is the greatest sports movie of all time. Why do I stick with this argument?

It just plays out every boys fantasy of growing up and playing for your favorite college football program, even if it is just a couple of plays.

In saying all of this I do like other sports movies and there are quite a few good ones out there, to name one that I haven't seen mentioned yet (sorry if it has) would be hoosiers.

Sports in movies is always a fun topic and always brings out diverse opinions from all generations from all over the world.

Rudy is a good movie to enjoy, but it's not the greatest sports movie of all time.

Let's take a look at more movies that are considered better than Rudy and wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving:

Good choice, a terrific movie.

Good job using spaces, left.

But oh boy this could get bad!!!

Here comes the Notre Dame hate...

read about how much of Rudy was made up for the movie

it really takes away from the "true story"

Field of Dreams.

Agreed. Makes it hard to call it the greatest sports movie ever, if we are talking true stories.
Or if that's part of the argument.

I like comedies...so I always think of Caddyshack, lol.

Rudy's best part wasn't even real. Joe Montana was on that team and he said that the scene where everyone put their jersey's on the coaches desk for Rudy... was made up! Plus, he said that they carried him off the field as a joke.

I hate ND, but I can't think of many movies that made my skin tingle the way it did at the end of Rudy, let alone a sports movie that had that strong an effect. Rudy is in my top 10 of all time.

The biking movie was ok. Million dollar baby board the hell out of me and that version of Clint Eastwood is getting [i]old[i], pun intended.

Ok, but since we are not comparing it against other "real" movies, then I am not going to diminish the movie as such. Invictus, The Blind Side and Invincible also had plenty of "artistic licensing"

Real or not, that movie (as a movie) was great.

November 21, 2010  11:19 AM ET

While I agree with left, your third argument could use some "substance"

November 21, 2010  11:38 AM ET

invictus and blind side were much more accurate than Rudy

im leaning toward invictus as the best sports movie of alltime in that that sport helped unite a nation

November 21, 2010  11:55 AM ET

I've never seen invictus. I LOVE blind side.
I like remember the titans, too. I think that was pretty accurate portrayal of sentiments at the time, even if the movie was embellished.

Good call on Caddyshack. Major League is another great sports movie.

November 21, 2010  12:22 PM ET

Oh Major League. Now that is one of the BEST sports movies of all time.

Blades of Glory

Field of Dreams.

agree and the two listed are good but not even in the top 5.

The Natural, Bull Durham, Brain's Song, Hoosiers, Raging Bull, The Pride of the Yankees, Bang the Drum Slowly...

How about comedies like Caddy shack, Slap Shot etc and the most watch sports movie of all time is probably Rocky
