1994 Expos!

They were 74-40 when the season ended.

They were 1st in team ERA.

They were 3rd in runs scored.

These guys got hosed!

Here's a team for ya.
The 1919 Chicago White Sox, and here my friend, is why.

They had a .287 AVG as a team
There team ERA was 3.04,

They had

C- Ray Schalk .282 AVG
1B- Chick Gandil .290 AVG
2B- Eddie Collins .319 AVG, 33 SB's (HOFer)
3B- Buck Weaver .296 AVG 22 SB's (would-be HOFer if not for you know what)
SS- Swede Risberg .256 AVG 19 SB's (definitely the weak link)
OF- Shoeless Joe- .351 AVG 7 HR's in Dead Ball ERA (would be HOFer)
OF- Happy Felsch .275 7 HR's 19 SB's (possible would be HOfer)
OF Nemo Leibold- .302 AVG 17 SB's

P- Lefty William 23-11 2.64 ERA 27 CG 5 shutouts
P- Eddie Cicotte 29-7 1.82 ERA 30 CG's 5 shutouts (would be HOFer)
P- Red Faber 11-9 3.83 ERA (HOF)
P- Grover Lowdermilk 5-5 2.79 ERA
P- Bill James 3-2 2.52 ERA
RP- Dickey Kerr 13-7 2.88 ERA 10 CG's 2 shutouts

As a team, #1 in Runs scored and AVG.

Oh what could have been...

That's a very good argument, hence your 32-4 record, but I can't include a team of cheaters. They disgraced the game and the repercussions were felt for decades. Just ask Pete Rose.

The Expos had Pedro Martinez, Ken Hill (16 wins less than 3/4 through the season, Jeff Fassero 2.99 era, Butch Henry 2.43 era, a great bullpen with Wetteland, Rojas, Shaw, Scott and Heredia.

The outfield was phenomenal. Larry Walker, M. Grissom, and M. Alou, along with Cliff Floyd at 1st D. Fletcher catching.

Ok, in 114 games, Ken Hill and Pedro combined for 27 wins, not bad, but in 140 games, the two top Sox pitchers combined for 52! Thats a huge difference. Also, the Montreal Expos hitting wasn't the most intimidating

Darrin Fletcher- .260
Mike Lansing- .266
Sean Berry- .278 Avg
Not too great for starters.

Also, the team batting AVG is .278 (expos) to .287(White Sox). And the White Sox played in the Dead Ball Era, so that number is more significant than it appears.

I have no shame in taking a team that cheated, since they ARE the best team not to win a WS

Fletcher was an All Star that year which shows that batting average isn't the most important thing with a catcher.

Lansing was a defensive 2nd baseman.

Alou - .339
Walker - .322
Grissom - .288
Cordero - .294

7 players with double digit SBs also.

The deadball era had high batting averages, though less runs. By 1922 .400 had been reached 10 times! Less homers and runs in general though and low ERAs. From 1900-1920 the lowest ERA each year was under 2.00 seventeen times!

yes, the dead ball ERA distorts stats, but the 1919 Black Sox beat the Expos in ERA and AVG anyway. Also, career talent. The Sox have 2 HOF'ers, and if not for the Black Sox scandal, would have had up to 6. The Expos probably have 1, Pedro, and 2 that will get votes, moises Alou and Larry Walker.

The White Sox also had 7 people with double digit steals

Fletcher- .260 AVG 74 Hits 10 HR 57 RBI's in 94 games, those are not very good stats, the only reason he made the All-Star team is because he was on a good team and catchers were obviously not having a good year.

I loved where you were going with that jazenho...
but after scrolling down and seeing nomarfan's suggestion, I think he's spot-on. Maybe on a technicality.

That's one fantastic argument by nomar. Lohse would be proud.

September 7, 2007  04:04 PM ET

2001 Seattle Mariners...116 wins, 9 All Stars, 5 starters with minimum of 15 wins, 3 gold gloves, Ichiro MVP and Rookie of the Year.

September 7, 2007  04:05 PM ET

No one cares about 1919....did they play with rolled up socks and catch with their bare hands back then?

September 7, 2007  04:05 PM ET

1969 Orioles by a mile.

September 7, 2007  04:13 PM ET

one tp10super, you are an idiot

2) thank you Cole, that means a lot to me, my sole reason for living is to impress Kyle Lohse

Great teams don't lose on purpose.

September 7, 2007  04:39 PM ET

I agree with tp10super - 2001 Mariners are the best team w/o a World Series victory or even an appearance.

September 7, 2007  04:41 PM ET

The White Sox weren't even that great a team. Cincinnati had the better record and superior pitching. If you had to pick a Chicago team, it should be the team from the north side, the 1906 Cubs.

September 7, 2007  04:44 PM ET

The Yankees beat the Mariners handily in the ALCS. The same Yankees team that were pretty much outclassed against Arizona. If it weren't for Byung Hyun Kim, the Diamondbacks would have beat them in 5 games.

September 7, 2007  04:51 PM ET

01 Mariners.

September 7, 2007  07:18 PM ET

i would take nomar's outfield anyday

September 7, 2007  07:19 PM ET

good teams do lose on purpose when they dont get the bonuses for performing well that was gaurenteed to them before the season started...what would you do if your boss said you get a christmas bonus then renigged cuz he wanted more money for himself

September 7, 2007  08:56 PM ET

Not gonna forfeit 'cus I ain't French. I can't accept a team that threw games.

September 8, 2007  12:43 AM ET

According to Dave Stewart it would be the 1990 A's. They got swept 4 games to none, and Dave stated "the best team didn't win". I guess he shouldn't have lost 2 of the 4 games, if he really thought that.
