They are both pretty stupid in my opinion..

The ESPY's, the awards are usually pretty obvious or a waste of time..
I personally think SI's sportsman of the year is more stupid, cause the number of times they have gotten it wrong is just ridiculous;
1. Federer should have won the award by now..
2. Its bias towards americans..
3. It's made some ridiculous mistakes.. Like when Brady won, when everyone knows that manning is better, (this is coming from a Pats fan), or the time when dwayne wade won, (when he has never even won an MVP!)

If you dont think they are stupid, you can argue for them..

I would have to disagree and say the ESPY's are a bigger joke.

The SI sportsman of the year has been awarded since 1954, before the days of network sports on TV. The ESPY's on the other hand, have only been awarded since 1993 and in my opinion were created solely as a way to increase revenue on ESPN. The ESPY's highlight the E in the Entertainment and Sports Programing Network (ESPN). They are ESPN's attempt to compete with the other networks and their award shows (Oscar, Emmy, Grammy, etc, etc.). It is overly produced with all the red carpet and guest presenters as any other major award show.

While the SI sportsman of the year award may have deviated from it's initial purpose, it still has it's roots in athletic accomplishment, not pure entertainment. While I'll admit it is probably a bit biased towards Americans, it is an American publication.

Well, we both agree that they are both bad!

Why I do think the award ceremony is bad for the ESPY's..
Who was the NFL team of the year??? (how about the team that won the freakin SB).. ETC ETC.. The awards at the ESPY'S are just too predictable..
HOWEVER;
The one cool thing about them is that you get to see andy Roddick next to Tom Brady..
Its pretty cool seeing all the sports stars mingle together..
Its a shame that they have to make a silly excuse to meet up, such as the ESPYs..

The sportsman of the year award, however, there is no silver linning..
How does swayne wade win it? When he's not even the best guy on his own team?
SI makes one horrible decision after another..
Even dwayne wade said that Federer deserved the award more than he did?!?!?!
I dont mind if they make a bad decision here and there..
But it HAPPENS ALL THE TIME!

Forfeited Turn

oh blast.. Its ok mate they are both stupid!!

I just have soooo much disappointment in SI for all the stupid poor decisions they have made over the past 50 years..
I guess if they called it most popular american, then I wouldn't have a problem..
ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

I think the ESPYs are more stupid, but not enough to argue

I'm not saying I like the ESPYs, but I think they have good elements. I like the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage... some of the categories even aren't bad, but for the most part it's a watered down, predictable mess. I think SI's Sportsman is worse. Judging by some of their choices in recent years, I can't really pinpoint what on Earth their criteria is for choosing a winner.

HCF

You summed it up in your first sentence. Both are pointless.

Naming Dwayne Wade or Derek Jeter as SOY so badly discredited SI that it deserves all criticism sent its way.

I've never understood the point of the ESPYs.

I'm still waiting for a definiation of "sportsman". is it on the field acheivements? does it also take into consideration off the field contributions to the improvment of society? federer should have won by now either way. damn yankees....

It is a chance for Natalie Gulbis, Paula Creamer, and Maria Sharapova to look hot.

I'm okay with that.

The ESPY's are exactly like the MTV viewers choice awards or Nickelodeon kids awards. It is about young people who don't watch games just highlights and video games that determine who is a better team or player. It is an absolute joke to consider it a true award ceremony. SI doesn't get it right very often either so I can't defend them. ESPN is just so bad that it pains me to watch what they have done to the sportsworld after they did so much good for it in the early years.

The ESPYs did make fun of LeBron this year.
