If/When the Packers are mathmatically eliminated from the Playoffs, Brett Favre should sit.

I know he's one of the greatest QB's to ever play the game, but the team HAS to find out what they have in Aaron Rogers. He was a first round pick, and they need to know if he's going to be able to QB this team if and when Favre decides to retire. They need to let me start a few games and let him run the offense.

First of all I think the Packers won't be eliminited from the playoff hunt for a long time.. I don't tinink the Vikings and the Lions are that good, and also the Bears don't impress me as much... I think the organization we'll honor him not sit him for the last couple of games. He should retire as a starter.

But the statement if IF. I don't mean for the whole season. If say they are 3-7 thus eliminated, shouldn't they at least let Rogers start 2-3 games just to see how he handles himself? Don't they owe it to the guys that are there for the long run what they have at QB once favre leaves?

Well, I don't think they should give up, even at 3-7....who knows what could happen...last year they almost made they playoff with that 4-0 run. And, even if they don't make it, I think they owe the fans at least the feel that they don't give up. Three years ago the Cardinals beat the Vikings with an onside recovery and hail mary pass, even if they lost the number 1 pick in the draft! You wanna win as many games as possible, period.

I agree with winning as many games as possible. I would hate any organization that would give up. But I think this is more about finding out what they have in Rogers, and if they can count on him, or think about moving in another direction after Favre. And if say favre is going to play next year, and they Pack know they'll have money to spend next year on FA's, why keep playing him in meaningless games and maybe suffer a career ending injury.

Good arguments, btw, good TD.

somebody stated: If you don't perform, you sit. That's right. But I don't think it's Favre's fault that the packers were and twelve two years ago. Offense line, lack of go-to receivers, average defense put him in a hard situation. So you people say that after a team is begining to lose they should all sit their veteran players, coz what's the point in playing, they'll retire eventually? Oakland, Arizona, SF, they should have benched their veteran players last year after 8 games? That is rediciolus..

No they shouldn't sit Brett. Rodgers (though I think he shouldn't be the starter) will probably start next year if Favre retires...if this team gets into the playoffs and makes it past the Wild Card expect Favre to return because he feels the team could be closer to a championship. If they get bumped early from the playoffs or don't make it, he'll probably call it a career....or he'll play until he's 40 no matter what happens.

Brett hasnt "given up" in his entire career. It would be TOTALLY disrespectful to him and his HOF career to sit him.....

September 13, 2007  10:14 AM ET

So if say the Packers are 3-7 after 10 games, Favre should keep playing? For what? For the streak? Doesn't the franchise need to see what they have in Rogers? And if they need to go in a different direction if Favre retires?

September 13, 2007  10:15 AM ET

We don't know that. Thus the word IF.

September 13, 2007  10:21 AM ET

Nothing worse than someone accepting a TD then not making an argument

September 13, 2007  10:43 AM ET

what about the vikings?

September 13, 2007  10:57 AM ET

Bret should play as long as Bret wants to play. He's earned that right.

September 13, 2007  10:57 AM ET

what about the vikings?

GirlsRcool | 09/13/07

Um, yeah, good argument, they should sit Brett Favre. Thanks for playing.

packers play the vikings twice

"Earned the right?" This is the NFL, not some handicap league. If Brett has led his team to a 3-7 start, heck yes he should sit. The organization, as much as they love Favre, should see how their investment is panning out. Also, the fans do not want to sit and watch Favre throw INT after INT, which is what will happen. He is on the deep downside of his career. Yes, he still has a good arm, but that isn't enough. He didn't do much even in the game they won last week. No one is "owed" anything in the NFL, you have to earn it by your play. The only feasible reason he should keep playing after being eliminated from playoff contention is if the front office doesn't believe in Aaron. That isn't the case, though. Many teams have taken this approach: 2006 Romo replacing Bledsoe and 2004 Eli replacing Kurt Warner. Two QBs that have taken their teams to the Super Bowl. They "earned" it, right? Nope. Simple: If you don't perform, sit on the bench.

September 13, 2007  11:12 AM ET

Thanks Brandon, I've never understood the "earned that right" either. Doesn't Favre also owe it to the organization to say when he's retiring, and helping the organization move forward with helping Aaron along and giving him a shot?

September 13, 2007  11:46 AM ET

makii, no they shouldn't sit all their veteran players. They're still playing to win. But they all don't have 38 year old QB's who is on the verge of retiring every year either.

September 14, 2007  12:40 PM ET

I guarantee that if the Packers goe 3-7 that it won't be Bretts fault and therefore he will not ride the pine. This is a pretty good team and that is a really big IF.

Whether it's his fault or not is not the point. And of course it's a big IF, tell us something we don't know.
