Of all the Superbowl MVP winners, who was the most deserving and least deserving? Argue most first, then least, then who should have won instead.

To clarify my title. The first argument - who was the most deserving of MVP. The second argument - who was the least deserving MVP. The final argument - who should have won the MVP instead of the one you thought was least deserving. This is going to require some research I know, but what the heck.
Most deserving:
Chuck Howley - Superbowl V. Huh? You might be saying. Well, he was the 1st defensive player to win this award. He was also the first player chosen from a losing team. Let me repeat that - he was the first player to win from a LOSING team. Your first thought might be why would someone from a losing team win the MVP? That's because no one deserved it more. Howley did everything he could to help the Cowboys win. (BTW, they lost in the final seconds on a FG) He had 2 INTs and a fumble recovery. He left everything on the field. He deserved it most because he was truly the best player on the field, which is supposed to be the point of the MVP - to give it to the most deserving player.

The most deserving--- Broadway Joe Namath

Publicly guaranteed the New York Jets would beat the heavily favored Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III... and backing up his comments with a victory... the Baltimore Colts that year were considered the best football team ever. Joe went 17 for 28 and was the catalyst of the offense in the victory

Least Deserving:
After thinking long and hard about this one, and changing my mind a couple of times (I will put in the comments who I was thinkg about first) I finally convinced myself to go with Dexter Jackson - SB XXXVII. Boy that's a mouthful. I do believe that someone on defense should have won it, but not Jackson. He had 2 interceptions, but for only 34 yards combined. They didn't really help put Oakland away because they were both in the first half when the game was still manageable. His first one was more because Jolly ran the wrong route and Gannon basically just handed it to him. The second only set up a FG. Sorry, but I don't think he was the best defender that night.

Jackson was my other pick... the reason he won is because his INT's were in the first half and helped swing the game and open the flood gates. (you are right, Rice, Brooks, and DB all had great performances in the game).... happens to be my favorite game of all time too.

The least deserving - Desmon Howard

While his 99 yard kickoff return for a TD is impressive and a SuperBowl record for longest scoring play, Favre was the MVP of that game. The Pack was up a touchdown before Howard's kickoff return in the 4th quarter. Howard's kickoff return was a great, but they were already in the lead when he did it because of Favre (and the D).

Favre was a machine in that game completing 14 of 27 for 246 yards and 2 TD's. He also ran for another TD. After the Howard TD, Favre also threw for a 2 point conversion to Chmura to go up by 14. Favre became the first Super Bowl winning quarterback to have at least three touchdowns (2 throwing, 1 rushing) and not be named Super Bowl MVP.

Who should have won it:
It's funny you mentioned Smith. Since this SB was as good of a defensive pounding as one could give, a defender definitely deserved it. So I would have given it to Dwight Smith. He also had two INTs and returned them both for touchdowns. One was a 50 yarder and the other a 44 yarder. Each of those were more than Jackson's combined. After Tampa actually scored an offensive TD, Oakland was coming back and Smith returned his 1st INT 44 yards for a TD to put away the Raiders for good. And just to add insult to injury, Smith returned another INT 50 yards to end the game. Jackson played a heck of a game, but I don't think his play was any better than Smith's or Derrick Brooks for that matter. I briefly thought of Howard. I don't want to take away what Favre did, but Howard did deserve it because in addition to the 99 yard TD, he had 244 total return yards which set up several scores for Green Bay.

It???s a little more difficult to say someone didn???t deserve an MVP when you have to pick who it should have gone to. I wanted to put in a throwdown where we would actually have to work for it. Good job powers.

Again, Favre should have won it. He was a Super Bowl winning QB who had 3 TD's and a 2 point conversion. Without him, they would not have won. Howard had a good game, but out of his 244, 100 came on 1 play. Favre did it the entire game. He was the general... No way he shouldn't have won that award.

Smith had both his INT's in the 2nd half when the Raiders were getting taken to the shed. They had to pass and the game was already out of reach. One of those was a tipped pass... If anyone besides Jackson deserved it, it would be Rice. He had a couple of huge sacks and actually played the run and made some key tackles.. He would have won it if not for the "fan vote" which gave him for votes on the internet polling. (which I'm not sure they do anymore)...

Great TD i!! enjoyed it...

Nice pick

September 13, 2007  01:10 PM ET

I think powers should change his name to 'except after c' just for this throwdown.

September 13, 2007  01:10 PM ET

you too... I actually didn't know that about Howley...

September 13, 2007  01:12 PM ET

Man, I don't know who to vote for yet, both great picks. I'll wait for more arguments.

September 13, 2007  01:15 PM ET

daunte culpepper

September 13, 2007  01:18 PM ET

LOL chalklounge (you're going to get me in trouble at work for laughing too loud

September 13, 2007  01:37 PM ET

I think Joe Namath is the LEAST deserving. He only threw for 206 yards and 0 TDs. He is the only Super Bowl QB MVP to not have any touchdowns in the game.

Matt Snell was the true MVP of that game with 30 carries for 121 yards and 4 catches for 40 yards. He pounded the Colts D and was the workhorse for the Jets.

September 13, 2007  01:45 PM ET

He guarnteed a victory against the "best football team ever" (the consensus at the time) and didn't make any mistakes. He opened up the run, not the other way around. No TD's is deceptive considering they were facing a very tough Colts defense and a double digit underdog

September 13, 2007  01:54 PM ET

Snell had a bigger day than Namath, plain and simple. It's a widely held belief in the N.Y. area that Snell was more deserving of the MVP.

September 13, 2007  01:55 PM ET

I'm waiting for the next part before I vote though...

September 13, 2007  01:56 PM ET

I agree with Broadway Joe, but before I read that argument I thought Howley was a lock. Nice arguments both.

September 13, 2007  01:56 PM ET

It's Heinz Ward from Superbowl XL (The least deserving BY FAR). That SB was rigged, and no one could argue otherwise. Funny how that was the last game that crew worked together. Go Hawks!!

September 13, 2007  02:01 PM ET

Folks, try not to say who you would pick until we are finished with our picks

September 13, 2007  02:05 PM ET

Then go ahead and make your pick!

September 13, 2007  02:06 PM ET

Don't worry i... I wasn't picking Ward.

September 13, 2007  02:07 PM ET

I have 2 in mind and I am almost 100% certain one of them will be your pick...

September 13, 2007  02:21 PM ET

I meant Smith and DB... Dwight Smith returned 2 TD's in that game.

September 13, 2007  02:39 PM ET

How about Peyton Manning in SB XLI? The award should have been a co-MVP given to Dominic Rhodes and Joseph Addai. The run game is what won the game for Indy. Had Addai gotten in the endzone, He likely would have won the award alone.

September 13, 2007  02:42 PM ET

You know keepinittreeuh, that was my other choice. I think Rhodes should have gotten it, but Peyton did throw for 247 yards and a 65% completion rate in a downpour. I was really torn on it which is why it took so long for me to post. Honorable mention goes to Larry Brown in SB XXX.

September 13, 2007  03:12 PM ET

I would vote whoever ended up winning the MVP in the Giants-BIlls superbowl...Thurman Thomas should have won even though he lost the game.

Ottis Anderson...that's it. Thurman was the true MVP
