My argument is that Jamarcus Russell is a bigger bust than Ryan Leaf or any other bust ever. I have several points to prove this.

First, the hype. He came out of college after a great senior season in which he threw for 3,100 yards, 28 TD's and 8 INTs and LSU beat Notre Dame 41-14 in their bowl game. He was 1st team SEC, 4X SEC Player of the week, & the winner of the Manning Award. Russell, a senior, left LSU with his best year and he got much praise in workouts. Mike Mayock and Mel Kiper both have said that his workouts were some of the better that they've ever seen from a QB. The workouts greatly moved Russell up the draft board and then the Raiders took him #1.

Second, the failure. Russell showed up to camp in poor shape and was never in shape. He then proceeded to throw for 4,000 total yards, a 65.2 rating, and a 18-23 record in 3 seasons in which he posted a 50.0 QB rating (lowest ever) in 2008, beefed with coaches and eventually got busted for "Purple Drank" on a terrible Raiders team. There was just so much hype followed by such failure that I say that there is no way that there has even been a bigger bust than Russell.

I give you a guy that played in the Pac 10. Since you are so stuck on quality Conferences.

With even worse stats than Russell. Yes, it is true. If not shocking.

46.6%, 100.5ypg, 5 TD's to 13 INT's (2.8 INT %) with a 52.8 Passer Rating
70 carries for 371 yards, 5.3ypc, 16.9 ypg, 1 TD

Oh and a 3-14 record as a starter in the NFL.

Russell's REAL stats:

52.1%, 131.7ypg, 18 TD's to 23 INT's (3.4 INT %) with a 65.2 Passer Rating
40 carries for 175 yards, 4.4ypc, 5.6ypg, 1 TD

7-18 as a starter

As bad was Russell's accuracy was? He completed over 50% of his passes. The other QB I listed did not.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you....

AKILI SMITH!!!

The Bengals passed on Daunte Culpepper who was drafted 11th. Can you imagine if they had taken Culpepper instead of Smith?

Or even Torry Holt who was drafted 6th by the Rams?

The Bengals could have used Culpepper or Holt and might have changed the Bengals fortunes.

Throwdown!!!

BRING IT!!!!

Forfeited Turn

More on Akili Smith:

Jr year: 54%, 125.9ypg, 6.9ypa, 13 TD's to 7 INT's woth a 126.6 Passer Rating
Sr year: 58%, 342.1ypg, 10.1ypa, 30 TD's to 7 INT's with a 166.1 Passer Rating

He had one great season after transferring to Oregon from Grossmont Junior College.

He had bust written all over him and he certainly showed he was with his pathetic NFL performance.

He was the 4th best QB out of 29 available in the draft yet the Bungles chose him 3rd. Another in a long line of horrible decisions for their franchise.

Akili Smith was a bigger BUST!!!

No longer in the NFL, the mantle has fallen onto Alex Smith who is still employed by the Niners.

Get to this later or early in the am.

As bad as Smith was/still is, Jamarcus is even worse. Alex Smith went to college at Utah, a low conference school, and his best achievement was Mountain West player of the year. Jamarcus was all team SEC, 4 time SEC Player of the Week, Manning Award Winner, Davey O'Brien runner up to Troy Smith and he played at LSU, one of the premiere football schools in the country. Smith career: 51 TD's, 53 INT's, 10,000 passing yards. As bad as that sounds, its a lot better than Jamarcus. Thanks for pointing out Smith though.

I'm sorry, I was wrong. Jamarcus had 18 TD's and 23 picks career, not an 18-23 record. I knew that sounded kind of funny.

JaMarcus Russell's NFL career was way worse than Alex Smith's.

Alex Smith gives the impression that he's trying out there.

Barely, but it's there.

Leaf, Mandarich, Akili Smith - Russell maybe was costlier in financial terms, but there have been bigger busts. The Pack drafted Mandarich, passing over 4 future Hall of Famers.

Yeah but this is a TD for biggest bust not most costly pick or worst pick. Just biggest bust.

Exactly. Smith tries with a horrible team while Russell never tried, did Codeine, and just wanted the money.

Yes. Alex Smith was a huge disappointment too but Russell has been way worse of a bust.

February 19, 2011  03:36 PM ET

Let me remind you people, as bad as he is Alex Smith was drafted a year BEFORE Russell and he is still with the 49ers, the team that drafted him. As bad as he's played, he's still on the roster and will be a Free Agent if the CBA gets worked out. Imagine that, Alex Smith lived to see the end of his contract in San Fran.
