Craig Biggio is one of the best second baseman our game has ever seen. He played tough his whole career, and always gave his all. The Charlie Hustle of his day in my opinion. He only went on the disabled list one time in his whole career. Now on to the credentials. 3,051 hits, the stat that we'll most likely get him in. All members of the 3,000 hit club are either in the hall of fame or will be.(possibly excluding Palmeiro) 1840 runs, good enough for 13th on the all time list. Again, all ahead are either in the hall, will be, or banned from the game(pete rose). 666 doubles, 5th all time, again behind hall of famers and Rose. 291 career home runs, second most by someone who played most of their career at second base to Jeff Kent. He has amassed 414 stolen bases, and has a career obp of .363. I believe he will be a hall of famer, possibly first ballot

Yes, for his career, Craig Biggio has pretty impressive numbers. However upon a much closer look and analysis, one will see that the numbers are very deciving. It's been a LONG time since Craig Biggio had what people would call a good season. For argument's sake, I'll say that is 1999.
Biggio's averages since 2000 (the year after his last good year):
.266/.354 132 homers, 436 RBI, 66 steals
So that's about .266/.354 with 18 homers, 62 batted in, and 9 steals. how is that HOF worthy? The dude hasn't had a good season in 7 years. Yes, he has all those numbers but he has gotten them by hanging around the game for far too long. If guys like Blyleven and Morris are being punished for sticking around too long, why is Biggio being rewarded?
pecotafreak said 09/16, 07:43 PM
Yes Biggio's numbers did tail off near the end of his career. But he plays at a position where offense usually doesnt come gushing out. Second base doesnt produce many players of high offensive caliber, but biggio has been one of them. He has been consistent throughout his career, with three straight 20 home run seasons up to this year, very good for a second baseman. Between 1960 and 2000 only two players scored over 500 runs in a four year span, Biggio and bagwell. He's one of those baseball players you want your kids to idolize for their hard work ethic and dedication. Thats why he deserves to be in the hall of fame. He doesnt have to have the flashiest numbers, its just the way he plays the game. He played with the Astros his whole career because he loved the fans and loved playing there. He's a class act, and has put up the career numbers voters look for to get in the hall of fame
thejetstolehome: hiatus? said 09/16, 07:56 PM
There's no denying Biggio is a stand up guy and a hustler but that doesn't mean he should be put in the HOF. There's many guys who I want my kids to take after but that doesn't mean they belong in the Hal. Isn't the HOF about flashy numbers? Biggio once had those but he doesn't anymore and hasn't had them for a long time. In fact, he's been in the top ten in the league for outs made seven times in his career and is the active leader in the category.
The more guys like him get into the Hall of Fame, the more it becomes watered down. The beginning and the end of his career were far too average to make his career completely complete. Biggio had an absolutely great middle of his Major League Campaign from 1994-1999 but since 2000, he has been a down right average baseball player. If that stretch had extended more into the 21st century, then yes, put him in but he's been too average for too long. However, the fact that he hasn't been near the top of the league in any relavent offensive category since the early part of the century and before excludes him from HOF talk, IMO.

I know where your coming from, the stats your using are also the way I judge players. But for some reason, it's different with Biggio for me. He has the charisma about him. That humble feeling reserved for all time greats. And by the average fans standards, he was still performing well up until 2006. From 2001 until 2005 he posted run totals of 118, 96, 102, 100, and 94. I know those numbers are dependant on your teams ability to drive you in, but he also posted high amounts of doubles in those years as well, with three years of 40 or more and one year of 47 total. He hit 20 home runs three times in those years as well. I know those arent dominant and can be proven weak with sabermetrics, but for a declining player those arent all that bad. His ability to switch positions 4 times in his career also makes a strong argument for him in my opinion. And the only players to have more hits than him while playing most of their careers at second base were eddie collins and nap lajoie. Both of these players are in the hall of fame, so why shouldnt biggio be?
thejetstolehome: hiatus? said 09/16, 09:21 PM
Collins and Lajoie are in the HOF because their numbers blow Biggio's out of the water.
Lajoie: 3, 242 hits, .338/.380; Collins: 3,315, .333/.424; Biggio: 3,051, .281/.363. Another reason that must be taken into context here is historical era. Collins and Lajoie played in relative dead ball eras where hitting was not so prominent. In today's juiced up (ball wise, not steroids) game, 3,000 hits and 500 home runs may not mean as much as they used to.
Also, while taken as a whole, Biggio's career may seem real impressive (slighted by a great middle, sandwiched by two not so great times) but even broken down less than I have (a year by year basis) it's not that great.
Craig's average season: .281/.363/.434, 17 HR, 67 RBI, 24 SB (7 CS), 105 R. Is that all that bad? No, it's a nice average to have. Hell, I'd kill to have that career. However, nice isn't the same as Hall of Fame.
If we're gonna talk about fielding, yeah he's been alright but for his career at 2B, he's got a .984 FP with a league average FP of .982. He's slightly above average but not too much. Did he have a good career? Yes. But not an HOF career.

I forgot to mention, he is the only player since the 162 game schedule initiated to not hit into a double play for a whole season, and the only player since 1912 to have a 50 double- 50 steal season

i don't hate Biggio--he's a good guy and he was a good player but he does not deserve the HOF. his numbers at face value are good but why should we take them at face value? he hasn't been a good player in SEVEN YEARS. why is he being rewarded for sticking around when others are being punished? if he's going to go in, why can't Bert Blyleven?

eh, i hope your'e right but if i know fan-nation, i know i'll be losing badly soon. i'd say 85% of people vote on title alone. however, the comments by ravensfan and thefaintx give me a little hope.

yeah it was a really good td. FAintx votes against me on all of my td's because he says i lack character, but this is the first time he actually said something positive about the other persons argument.

Biggio is good, not great. His best stats dare I say it occurred during the height of the steroid era. Not HOF worthy

hall of fame numbers dont just come from the year 1999 and on...they are CAREER numbers. The guy has 3000 hits, 6th all time in doubles, 2nd in hit by pitches, and starts majorities of seasons at catcher, infield, and outfield. He will easily be a first ballot MVP
