Posluszny will be the D-ROY. After two games, he already has racked up 22 tackles on a lackluster Bills defense. If you watched the Steeler/Bills game today, you saw he was constantly around the ball. He's got what it takes to be a star, and it starts this year.
Most of the other defensive rookies have not distinguished themselves so far, so Posluszny has the head start on them for the award.

Yes, I saw Pat Willis' numbers. He's about the only competition out of the rookie pool right now.
However, having to pick only one of them, I chose Posluszny. His pass deflections and INTs will come; he does an excellent job of coverage. I except him to get a few sacks as well, since he moves through clusters of blockers well.
If the stats are similar at the end of the season, expect that West Coast Bias to make the difference. East coasts voters will take the east coast guy. That's just how it goes.

How can you pick a guy that you say is only better because he has 3 more tackles but less PDs and FFs?
And how about we go beyond the players and to the defenses. When the stats are close, voters usually look at the defenses, and right now, San Fran is ranked 17th and Buffalo is 31st.
Or look at their defenses. Paul plays MLB in a 4-3 (quite an important postion), while Willis plays ILB in a 3-4.
And the 20 yard shuttle and 3 cone drill? How often do you run like that in a game?
How often is it that you actually have to flow to the ball and SHED blocks, and apparently Willis is really, really good at that. Mike Singletary raved about this guy, not so much about Posluszny.
And Poz isn't a good cover man. He's rather slow (actually, one of the concerns of him coming into the league was that he was going to be too slow to play OLB at the Pro Level).
At least Willis has speed, which gives him more of an edge.
Besides, most of the other combine numbers are too close to care about.

I didn't say he's better because he has three more tackles. I said he had three more tackles. That's a fact. I didn't even say Poz is better. I just said he'd win the ROY. Clearly he has the ability to make good defensive plays; we've seen it in college and we've seen it the past two weeks.
Playing MLB in a 4-3 is one of the fastest ways to rack up tackles. The defense funnels the runner right to you. OLBs make more of the plays in a 3-4. That's just how it's designed.
The quality of the defense doesn't matter as much as you claim. A guy from Houston won it last year! How good was their D?
How often do you have to flow to the ball and shed blocks? Have you watched a football game before? If you can't flow to the ball and shed blocks, you don't make the field. You barely make the team.
The combine numbers being close is exactly my point: They have similar athletic ability. To say that Willis is a far better athlete is stretching it. He has better stright-line speed, and that's it. Shuttle and cone drills measure acceleration and agility, two of the most important qualities for an ILB. In those, Poz matches up favorably.

Kay, so now after today's games, let's look at it:
Willis: 26 Total Tackles (19 Solo, 7 Assisted), 1 PD, 1 FF
Poz: 27 Total Tackles (17 Solo, 10 Assisted)
How can you not take Willis? Now he only has one less tackle than Poz after Poz's poor showing today, but he STILL has that PD and FF.
I'll take Willis' 19 solos, a PD, and FF over Poz's 17 solo anyday. It shows that Willis has been involved in more plays.

Report Offensive CommentNot so fast my friend.
Patrick Willis may have 3 less tackles, BUT he already has 1 PD and 1 FF. Poz only has tackles, nothing else.
In fact, Willis' first tackle resulted in said FF.

Report Offensive CommentWillis is far more athletic, and by the end of the year, will have made a ton more plays than Poz. Leanin' toward Bio, gotta wait for it to play out.
Ombudsman Cooz | 09/17/07, 09:27 AM
Report Offensive CommentWillis may seem more atlethic, but their combine numbers don't really support that. I'll get into those during my third argument.

Report Offensive CommentYeah, compare their 40 times.
Ombudsman Cooz | 09/17/07, 11:46 AM
Report Offensive CommentI did. But how often does a MLB run 40 yards? Shuttle times, cone drills, and bench press are more important at that position.
Rodclo | 09/17/07, 11:57 AM
Report Offensive CommentYeah, but it doesn't change the fact that Willis can be more dynamic because he's faster.
