Lawrence Taylor. The most dominant defensive player in NFL history. Taylor was an extremely athletic and versatile defensive force. Taylor can be remembered for his career sacks, but Taylor was also able to stop the run and go into pass coverage. Bill Parcells recognized his uncanny abilities and thus started up the 3-4 defense. LT revolutionized not only his position, but defense as a whole. And, he shaped offenses as well.
From 1981-1993, LT was the most dominant defensive force in the NFL. Racking up incredible numbers, Super Bowls, and records. Taylor finished his career with 1,088 Tackles, 132.5 Sacks, 33 FF's, 10 FR's, 9 INT's, 2 Defensive TD's, and he went to 10 Pro-Bowls. (In 1981, Sacks werent counted, so add another 9.5 and he's got 142)
LT forced other teams to shift their gameplans to counter him. Taylor was a dominant force during his playing days. His play is still affecting the NFL, and I'll tell you why in my 2nd argument.

Although LT was one of the greatest D players, he first played in the 80s, but there were many players that came before him that never even knew a thing about him. My pick is Jim Brown.
Jim Brown was probably the HARDEST HITTING running back to ever play the game. When teams lined up against him on defense, they were just hoping they would make it back home that night without too many injuries. During Brown's time, there was hardly any protection for NFL players, but because of Brown's hard hitting stlye, teams HAD to wear better defensive clothing to protect from injury.
Jim Brown was the best RB of his time, and arguably the greatest ever. When he retired, he held the single season rushing record(1863), career rushing(12,312), rushing TDs(106), total TDs(126), and all purpose yards(15,549) He was the fastest man to reach 100 TDs until 2006, when LT(the RB) broke it.
The most amazing part about this is that Brown played when the league only had a 12 game season and Brown retired before age 29, to become an actor. If he had stayed in the NFL, he may still hold many records today and be considered by far the greatest ever.

I love Jim Brown. I think he is the greatest running back ever. Right there with my favorite football player ever in Walter Payton. But to me there is a problem with your pick. This is about the most influential player. All those stats you listed are nice for Jim, but what did he do to radically alter or shape the NFL? To me, all he did was create a new style of running. The bruising style. Here's why I think LT is the better guy:
1. LT forced coaches during his day to change their gameplan when facing the Giants. Coaches like Joe Gibbs had to come up with a Two-Tight End set to try and counter LT. Bill Walsh had to use his Guards to counter LT.
3. A tackles job was to prevent D-Linemen from getting into the backfield. Because of LT and the 3-4 defense he helped create, they now have to worry about OLB's. Guys like Shawn Merriman and DeMarcus Ware can thank LT for how they are feared today.
4. The 3-4 defense is a proven base that has helped propel teams to Super Bowl titles. In recent memory, teams like the Steelers and Patriots have run the 3-4. Today, I can think of 8 teams that use the 3-4.
RHATER is Gone. said 09/18, 07:58 PM
Creating the bruising style of running was just ONE thing Jim Brown did to shape the game of football. Honestly speaking, LT himself was influenced by Jim Brown. Before Brown played, the amount of protection players had was minimal, because there really wasn???t enough damage done by a single player for the need. Brown DID make a need for armor though, because of his strong ability. Every single NFL player has been influenced by Jim Brown???s style of playing football.
During Jim Brown???s time, sports still was not entirely integrated. Blacks were not treated as fairly as whites were treated. Brown was the most prominent black player of his time, and faced a lot of negativity from fans, players, and even his own coach, but his amazing achievements in my first argument helped gain respect for blacks in football.
LT influenced football by changing the play of the game. Although few players ever were as great as LT, he is not the only player to change entire playbooks in the NFL. His influence is not as great only because he played in the 80s, so there was less for him to influence. Brown played before LT, and influenced many more players before LT even entered the NFL.
Mac Has Left FN (For Now) said 09/18, 08:17 PM
Ok, now your reaching. Saying LT was influenced by Jim Brown is a bold statement. But then the reasoning being that is was for extra protection is ridiculous. So by that logic, I guess Ray Nitschke, Bobby Bell, Deacon Jones, and others influenced the NFL to add padding also. And I guess Gale Sayers gave reason for guys to tape their ankles because of how quick he was. Sersiously, that means NOTHING.
You make it seem as if Brown was responsible for bringing in blacks to football. That is ludicrous.
Your last paragraph is meaningless. Discrediting the incredible achievements of LT just because he played in the 80's & there was "less for him to influence" is lame. Taylor played in the 80's, but what he did during the 80's has shaped the NFL of TODAY. As you know, Bill Parcells created the 3-4 defense from his great player in Taylor. Taylor was basically what sparked the 3-4 defense. OLB's never were deployed to be pass rushers. LT was the Black Sabbath of the NFL, if you will. Sabbath started it all for metal and revolutionized rock, and LT helped start the 3-4 and revolutionized the NFL. He is the reason why tackles are so important. *(Continued in comments)*

I am so sorry for the late response. I left the computer yesterday, and my little brother thought it would be funny to stick a magnet onto the screen, and you know what happens then...
What I meant by saying LT was influenced by Jim Brown was that the armor to help defensive players was for players like Jim Brown, but Brown was the best hard hitter. If LT was playing vs. Brown w/o all the protection he had, he could get hit so hard he would be unconscious. Although there were many other hard hitters, Brown was the leading reason for the armor. When the NFL wanted more protection, they were planning ahead in case another player like Brown came along.
Why is it ludicrous that I said Brown helped gain respect for blacks? Most people thought blacks really could only play defense, since they weren't smart enough for offensive positions. Brown proved them wrong. No matter how much they hated him for being black, they had to accept his greatness.
Saying Bill Parcells created the 3-4 just for Taylor is a bit of an overstatment. The 3-4 relies strongly on the nose tackle, since there are only three down lineman. The linebackers are expected to come in and *continued in comments too

I spoke to mikesteel about this and he gave me some suggestions. I had said I was leaning on Johnny Unitas or Jim Brown. He told me to take a look at guys like Mel Blount and LT. I chose LT.
Cuz LT is the man. He was in "The Waterboy".
"Now this brings me to my next point, don't do crack."

It just depends on how you look at influential. The most influential defensive player I think is Ronnie Lott. The most influential offensive player I think is either Jim Brown or Sir Walter Payton (RIP).
