Rex Grossman could be a great QB, but he doesn't have the supporting cast.

Bring on the hate mail because I know people HATE him. In his 2nd full season, Rex has started slow but has shown signs of his offseason work. My arguement is that if he were to get better pass protection and was able to get comfortable in the pocket, he could be a great starting QB for the bears.

Remember, last eyar he was named OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE MONTH for the NFC, and was a hands down fav for the Pro Bowl, then something happened and his mechanics broke down.

This year he has shown sparks of him being a good QB, but late in the game against the Chiefs when protection broke down, he again became erratic.
He has 3 interceptions, but one was a deflection and the other was Benard Berrian stopping his route and allowing the Charger's secondary to pick it off. He had no idea Rex threw to him.

His passer rating is a mere 55.1 so far, but his completion rating is at around 56%. If he were given more time to get the ball down field, I think he could do well.

Thoughts?

GrossMan is too inconsistent to be a competitive starter in the NFL. His passer rating is in the toilet, He is losing the confidence of his receivers, who have been either short arming the ball or stopping routes. His offensive line is good enough to open holes for the running game, but not for the time to throw the ball??

He would be a quality back up, because he is marginally effective in the offense, but he is starting out too shaky to continue as a starter.

Rex has been sacked 6 times in 2 games, 4 of which were unimpeaded defenders not picked up by either th eo linemen (Miller has the most on his side) or the RB not pickup up the defender. If he isn't given time, he won't complete many. Rivers, Brees, are prime examples.
The running game got off the ground last week, you open a hole just long enough for him to run through it. Passing coverage is a bit harder as you need to keep up the pocket long enough, problem for them is picking up blitzes.

c'mon you grossman lovers! He was lucky to manage the season last year. He got lucky and ended on a hot streak. Look at Brees, he was hot last year and now we are in a holding pattern to see if it was a fluke. There is no doubt that grossman has some skills, but to QB in the big boy league he has to have time that his own people aren't providing and his wideouts have to be in the right place at the right time all the while hoping that a DB hasn't been watching GrossMan and get there first.

No hate here....Rex is a bad QB. He just doesn't have that leadership quality about him.

September 20, 2007  02:39 PM ET

You knpow the same thing was said about Harrington and Carr. When you suck...you suck. If it walks like a duck, talks like a duck than its a duck. Or a goose. More like a goose... ohhh you get the point..

September 20, 2007  02:40 PM ET

I beg to differ, i think that is why the team rallys around him. He has a winning attitude even in the face of the media getting down on him so hard. How many people would sit and take that kind of verbal beating from the public and not snap and make some stupid comment?

He's done better than alot of QB's so far and yet HE is the one everyone looks to for a beatdown. if McNabb thought it was tougher being a black QB... try being Rex. Everything he does is analyzed, yet they overlook how bad Rivers was in his past 2 games.. worse than Grossman.

September 20, 2007  02:43 PM ET

True, but Carr and Harrington never showed ANY signs of being good. I think the reason Rex gets it the hardest is because he had such a great September last year, and then was showing flashes for the rest of the year.

When he's on, everyone knows he's dangerous to the opposition.
When he's off, he's a danger to his team.
So far this year, he hasn't shown his bad side. He may not be putting up huge numbers, but at least he is keeping it together and managing to stay afloat until the cavalry comes.

Sandman....I'm a Bears fan..I would like to see nothing more than another visit to the SB. When you see a QB, you should see a leader. I don't with Rex..just my gut feelings.

September 20, 2007  02:45 PM ET

No vote to either yet

September 20, 2007  02:50 PM ET

Alot of people had those feelings about Steve Young, Brett Favre, and Troy Aikman.. They didn't hit the ground running (heck it took young a long time to come into his own)

Those guys had a great supporting cast and amplified their abilities. There isn't any real chemistry on the offense of the Bears yet like their was early last year. Rex started that spark last year, but someone else will have to make a big play and set it off.

I'm in no way saying Rex will be a Hall of Famer, but he could be a good enough QB to not hurt the team more than help them. Maybe even probowl if he gets the cast he needs.

September 20, 2007  02:52 PM ET

If I had better pass protection, I could be a great QB.

You also need accuracy which Rex just doesn't have.

September 20, 2007  02:52 PM ET

I've never met those people..hope I never do..because than I'll be "IN A VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER!!!"

September 20, 2007  02:56 PM ET

It all goes back to mechanics. Last year he was throwing off his back foot and not squaring his hips. This year he is able to do that, but most of the passes are drops.

September 20, 2007  03:07 PM ET

The problem with Grossman is he fails to audible or to give himself protection. It's almost as if the Defense can show blitz, yell to him I'm blitzing, have 9 guys in the box, and he still won't audible from a 5 receiver set.....? He needs to read the defense before he snaps the ball. That's all.

September 20, 2007  03:13 PM ET

Rex doesn't have the mental capibility to be a starting NFL QB. Just too many bad decisions. He's got a blazer at WR, but too often he throws it to the guy covering him. He's just not good.

Brian Griese is a former pro bowler with a Super Bowl ring, and he's holding the clipboard.

September 20, 2007  03:17 PM ET

Good point. VISION is something that comes with play time, soemthing he doesn't seem to be picking up. His pocket presence his better this year, but the line needs to also read the blitz coming off the side. These guys are coming in untouched, which is every defensive player's dream to hit a QB at full steam.
I played safety and you just grin when you turn in and there is only you and him.. and he isn't looking your way.

Biran Griese??? Have you seen him play, he may have a ring but so does Dilfer.

I'd take Orton over Griese. Griese is more inaccurate that both Orton and Grossman combined. We went to training camp and watched them all.... most INT's came from Brian and that was against the 3rd team defense.

September 20, 2007  03:41 PM ET

Yes, I've seen him play. But it would appear that you haven't. Went to the Pro Bowl in 2000 with the Denver Broncos. But, since his name wasn't Elway. He never stood a chance. Then he goes where? Oh, just Miami. And since his name wasn't Marino, he never stood a chance. He then threw 27 TDs for the Bucs in 16 games, but then blew his knee out. Then the salary c(r)ap forced them to release him.

He also has looked very good in preseason and most of the world can't figure out why he isn't the starting QB. And I would guess Lovie disagrees with you since Orton is the 3rd string QB.

September 20, 2007  03:43 PM ET

By the way, since "you" would take Orton over Griese....I guess that's why they do it for a living and you comment on it online.

September 20, 2007  03:48 PM ET

Kyle did better than both QB's in preseason. But lovie has always stated that he wanted a vet at #2, which is why they brought in Brian from the beginning. Brian has thrown more INTs in less pass attempts

Kyle is no prize either, but all we need now is a QB who can move the ball and not make mistakes. Our D and special teams takes over, we just need to get the O going.

This week will probably be make or break for him. If the line holds like they say it will and he still makes mistakes, then the blame is on him and we should pull from the bench. This is a team that is built to win NOW and if the main gear isn't working, then time to swap.

Hahaha, same with you I would say.

If Griese is so good, why is it that he has been passed around the league as a journeyman?
