It's about TIME someone gave me my own NFL franchise???and in all my preparation to get my new fans ready for some football, I neglected to immediately exploit Commissioner Goodell's decree that I may selected any active player I wish to start my franchise.
It didn't take me long, though.
My player has to fit in my team???s overall philosophy of running the ball down your throat. Maybe it'll set up the pass. It starts in the trenches, though. Therefore, I want the best and youngest offensive lineman I can find.
I want Saints T Jammal Brown. No, seriously. I do.
You want a RB with the first pick? If Willie Parker has shown anything, it's that the system makes the back. You want a QB? Well, what about David Carr and Tim Couch ??? two QBs who fizzled out on bad, young teams.
He???s 6 foot 6, 315 pounds, a wingspan from N'Awlins to Atlanta, and quicker feet than Britney Spears' damage controllers. That combination in a guy is rare, definitely harder to find than an elite skill position player.
Yep, I'll build my team around him. Tomlinson or Brady or even the great Calvin Johnson aren't much without a cornerstone lineman.

I like that you have the stones to pick a lineman, but I will have to go with the usual. Peyton Manning is my guy.
Peyton Manning is about to pass Joe Montana on the major statistical categories for a QB. This is Peyton's tenth year. Montana had probably the best supporting cast a QB could ask for. Manning is amazingly talented. He has the Colts playbook down pat. He is the smartest QB in the NFL.
94.4 QB Rating. Second all-time behind Steve Young who had the great benefit of playing in a West Coast offense. He also holds the records for QB Rating and Touchdowns in the season.
You say that you can take away Peyton's linemen and he won???t be as good? I beg to differ. In the Super Bowl, the Colts lost their right tackle Ryan Diem early in the first quarter. The sixth round pick Charlie Johnson stepped in. Even without his right tackle, he still won the NFL MVP. This year, he lost his blindside man Tarik Glenn. He seems to be doing fine without him.
Offensive linemen are important, but as Peyton has shown, he can do wonders even with young linemen. If I had the first pick in some NFL Fantasy Draft like the ones on Madden, Peyton would be my guy.

Manning can't break any of Montana's records on his back, now can he?
A cornerstone tackle is figuratively and literally the guy on which you build a team. Considering Brown can play either left or right tackle (he has played both). The RT is a huge part of a team's running game, as generally, offenses set their strong side on the right. A LT takes care of my right-handed QBs blindside, thus protecting my big money guy.
So why not take a QB? If I buy a Porsche, I'm not going to leave it out in the elements. It's too valuable of an investment. It's wiser to get a well protected garage first.
RB? Why? Linemen make an average RB a good one. A great RB doesn't do much to an average lineman. Any back who belongs in the NFL only needs a crease, and it???s not tough finding a strong guy who runs a 4.4.
You can't teach a guy to stand 6 foot 6 with quick feet, long arms and great balance. I'll take Brown when I can get him, because he also happens to be a phenomenal.

I would've liked this one. While Right Tackle is the most important position on the line, and the O line is the most important positions in football - I wouldv'e taken a Brian Urlacher.
Nice love for right tackles, though.

Very bold, but if this guy picks Manning like I suspect he will, remember that the Colts just replaced their left tackle with a rookie and look no worse off.
Replacing Manning with a rookie, OTOH, would be a disaster.

That was a unusual pick, but I like it. I expected to see Palmer, Manning, Brady, Tomlinson, etc. Nice pick Cooz.

A fellow Simpson, lol.
I would take one of the following:
Carson Palmer
Champ Bailey
Steven Jackson
Jammal Brown
You must have read my mind, Cooz. I would have taken him as well. I have to see IrishR#1's pick before I vote.

"Dude stupid. So are you saying if we put vernand morency on behind jamal brown he is a star player?"
No, I'd say we put him in Green Bay and let him be a mediocre back, like the rest of the Packers backfield members of the last several years.

"...Replacing Manning with a rookie, OTOH, would be a disaster."
True, perhaps, but that's a very inaccurate comparison. This is a new (expansion) team. What you're saying suggests that every other player of the World Champions would still be in place, and 6-10 would be a disaster. That's the best record an expansion team has ever had.
Vote however you want, but don't look at this through Peyton's glasses. That's a HELLUVAn expensive investment to put behind a patch-work offensive line and no other marquee players. So the better question, Rodclo, would be how screwed is my team if Manning is on it, and some bum-nothing tackle gives up a career-ending sack?
I'd get in to how this is obviously going to go against me because I didn't choose arguably the best player in the game (and one of the most popular), but keep in mind, the question is not who the best player is, it's who I would start a team with. START a team, not add to a current roster. I have faith in my scouts to find very simply what I want in a QB. Seems to be clearly obvious a sixth-round QB can be even more successful than the first pick overall.

I like the pick Cooz...
You can always take an RB, QB, etc later in the Expansion draft (and that STAR QB or RB in the real draft with that first round pick, which is always number one with an expansion team besides when the Jags and the Panthers came into the league at the same time).

"<a QB> is always number one with an expansion team besides when the Jags and the Panthers came into the league at the same time."
Excellent point...Hey, I happened to catch the Jags and the Panthers in their conferences championship games a few years later...hmmm...Why didn't they need a QB?

i'd start with a qb and then invest a lot in getting a line.

You're right about the backs though. How often have we seen a team down to it's fourth-string RB, and they still run for 100 yards? Plenty of times. Good lines make every back look better.

Cooz, that isn't what I meant. I meant that only once has an expansion team NOT had the NUMBER ONE pick and that was when the Jags and Panthers came into the league...
