Better song or moment or atmosphere or whatever...
Don't Stop Believin' song by Detroit fans (mostly Red Wings)
Sweet Caroline song by Boston Red Sux fans
I'm taking Journey's Don't Stop Believin' for a couple reasons:
1 - Better song. Everything from the lyrics to the beat.
2 - More popular song, and more well known. It is the number one most downloaded not released in the 21st century, and consistently ranks in the top 100 downloaded songs on iTunes each year, despite being released 30-years ago. 4,339,000 digital copies have been sold, ranking just outside top 20 all-time. The same can't be said by Sweet Caroline.
3 - Better artist, Neil Diamond is an okay artiest, but Journey is way better.
4 - Don't Stop Believin' has apart in the song about Detroit, "Born and raised in South Detroit..." Sweet Caroline does not have any mention of Boston.
5 - It is the better karaoke song.

While you call Stop Believin' the #1 karaoke song. I would also love to call it the #1 most butchered karaoke song.
As for the mention of Detroit.
"Just a city boy, born and raised in South Detroit. He took the midnight train going anywhere"
Perhaps the people in Detroit are not smart enough to pick up on the sweet irony of this, but Detroit is sooooooo bad I would hop on a train regardless of where it's going. Just get me the F out of Detroit.
Sure people know the chorus, but it doesn't happen until 3:21 in a 4 minute song. That's a lot of lyrics for drunk Detroit fans to butcher.
Now for Sweet Caroline. People from Boston don't need the name of their city to be in the song for them to appreciate it. Perhaps you may not already know this, but "Sweet Caroline" is Caroline Kennedy. Yes those Kennedys. The ones from the New England area. Senator Ted, JFK, Bobby, etc. Caroline being JFK's daughter.
The song is simple. Up beat. No negative connotations, and the Chorus is frequent.
Coincidently, Sweet Caroline is commonly sung at Red Wing games too.
Popularity. Don't Stop Believin' is popular again not because of sports, but because of the Soprano's final episode
