Whose more a disgrace to their sport, OJ or Mike Tyson?

I am going to say Mike Tyson. First he was jailed for rape. Then he came back, then he bit The Real Deal. Then the outbursts, then the outrage. Now Tyson is facing charges again. Mike perfomed terrible acts in the ring and outside the ring, OJ on the other hand was retired and out of football completly. Unlike Tyson, OJ had moved onto other things like acting and golf. (In addition to setting up sting operations) If boxing was "dying" in the eyes of most Americans, like the perception says, then Tyson may have helped kill it. Tyson is a bigger disgrace to his sport then OJ is to football.

I'm going to say O.J. because he killed two people. OJ was a beloved Heisman Trophy winner who was so popular that even his offensive line at Buffalo had a nickname (The Electric Company). OJ was a smiley nice guy and was in dozens of TV shows and movies. The public loved this guy. Then he killed two people.

Every time people talk about "the best RBs" of all time OJ's name comes up. Then what do you think of? Nicole and Goldman. It's a shame that a fun type of discussion has thatcloud

Some people still believe OJ to be innocent of all charges. (I am not one of those people) He was charged but never convicted. Tyson is a convicted ****, and thug. Tyson was beloved by millions early in his career. He was the youngest HW champ ever. He even had his own video game. Tyson was a bigger name (and still is) in boxing then OJ is in football. Tyson is an example of everything wrong with boxing. There is more oturage about Mike Vick then OJ. Mike can still fight which makes his situation a worse black eye for his sport then OJ.

He was found guilty in the civil trial.

Boxing has always been a shadowy sport with dubious characters. Tyson was mugging old ladies as a teenager before he was "discovered". He was always a thug. He didn't disgrace the sport of boxing so much because that would be assuming that boxing was held in high regard before he came along. That's certainly not true.

Football players have always been held to a higher standard and lionized much more than boxers (excluding Ali of course).

Seriously? OJ was found guilty of wrongful death, not murder, but liek I said earlier he did it (I think). As far as boxing goes are you kidding me, when Tyson came on the scene boxing was huge. It needed a new HW champ and Tyson brought youth, vigor and a vicious punch to the sport. He actually wasn't a disgrace early in his career, in fact he was kinda soft spoken. Really? I think football players were held to lower standards until very recently. Butkus bit people, and no one stopped watching. Football got bigger. In the 70's football players could do whatever they wanted. Heck int eh 80's LT talks about doing coke all night before the games. Boxers were expected to be gentlemen too, especially after Sugar Ray and Marvin Haggler. Boxing was a premier sport and it's stars were held to a higher standard then others up until the past 15 or so years.

Mike Tyson was a self-admitted mugger as a teenager. He admits to knocking old ladies around to steal their purses. Soft spoken? ("psst, give me your purse lady" POW!).

Boxers were held to a higher standard? That's preposterous to say.

I didn't say boxing wasn't big. I said it wasn't held in high regard. It has always been looked at suspiciously. It has always had criminals amongst it's ranks. There was nothing to disgrace! Violent athletes mixed with mob management.

The difference: OJ was not CONVICTED but Tyson was.

OJ was found liable in civil court which is different.

weird you can type rape but not someone who rapes

Report Offensive Comment

You can't even say p e e wee football.

Report Offensive Comment

Mike Tyson without a doubt. Why? Tyson's offensive was committed while actively engaged in his sport of boxing, so it was a direct affront on the sport and its fans. OJ did nothing wrong during his career and for some years later, so I view his later troubles in life as having nothing to do with his sport.

Two words...Face Tattoo.

Hmmm. This is isn't going very well.

ESPN has ranked Tyson as the #1 Most Outrageous Character in modern sports history as determined by a panel of experts and an internet poll.

Report Offensive Comment

Using the ruling of that jury in the murder trial as part of your defense is also preposterous. Did you see the trial?

Not to mention, if boxing was held in such high regard, then why is Don King, a convicted BOOKMAKER and KILLER have such a successful career?

Report Offensive Comment

That's not exactly relevant to this discussion.

Dennis Rodman was "outrageous" too.

Report Offensive Comment

I meant-

"Then why has Don King...had such a successful career?"

Report Offensive Comment

If the question was, who was a worse person, it would be OJ. But it is who disgraced the sport, like Larry B said OJ's actions had nothing to do with football, and didn't hurt football in anyway. Now Oscar De La Hoya is trying to humorously tarnish boxing.

Report Offensive Comment

I think OJ did disgrace football because many people still think of him as a HOF running back (2,003 is a magic number) more than an accident prone cop in Naked Gun.

He is intrinsically linked to the NFL forever.

Detective Nordberg...LOL

Report Offensive Comment

LOL, I couldn't remember the name. That movie was good.

OJ is a disgrace to humankind, nothing to do with sports, he was an above average athelete. So the Answer to this TD is Tyson.

Report Offensive Comment

smackem,

"above average" isn't quite it. He won the Heisman, went to 6 Pro Bowls, and ran for 2,003 yards in a 14 game season. He was better than "above average". But that's another TD. "OJ was more than "above average"!

Report Offensive Comment

It is hard to disgrace boxing.

Did you see the trial?

Yes, and the most interesting part was when Mark Furman plead the 5th to avoid being convicted of planting evidence.

OJ was a national icon, and ruined that image.

We all knew Tyson was a thug from day one.
