The Pittsburgh Steelers are an ELITE team in the NFL RIGHT NOW

This same group of Steelers are only one year removed from the Superbowl. The same pieces that were in place then are basically in place now. Big Ben, Willie Parker, Hines Ward, virtually all of the same defenders from the leagues best defense in points allowed after 3 weeks: a paltry 26(less than 9 pts average allowed per game).
Yeah, Pittsburgh hasnt beaten anybody yet, right? Well the last time the Steelers played the Colts with the same core group there, they took them out in a divisional playoff game in the RCA Dome, so dont tell me Pitt cant beat the elite. The Steelers have had more playoff success(if you count rings) then the Patriots over the last two years. Heck, Brady lost in Denver, and the next week Pittsburgh went in there and destroyed the Broncos for the AFC Championship. This is the same Steelers team, but with one HUGE difference. Big Ben is over his concussion. Last years 8-8 was the consequence of it. This years stellar play is the proof of recovery.

How can Pittsburgh NOT be as elite as Colts and Patriots? They are people, so get off they havent played anybody yet bandwagon, because neither have the Patriots(San Diego looks like garbage right now).

First of all, I think it's problematic to use so much evidence from two years ago. But given that's how you want to argue this...
Here are some key differences from the Steelers' champion team:
Jerome Bettis - gone
Antwaan Randle El - gone
Joey Porter - gone
Kimo von Oelhoffen - gone
Bill Cowher, Ken Whisenhunt, Russ Grimm - gone
Jeff Hartings - gone
Chris Hope - gone
Not devastating losses, but Bettis and Randle El were important X-factors for that team, and their offensive identity was different due to different coaches; Big Ben is throwing a lot more than Cowher ever wanted him to.
It's been working so far, but you can't say this is the same team.
Another problem with your argument is... Didn't they have even closer to the same team last year? What happened then?
Finally, I'm not saying the Steelers can't beat the elite--Miami can beat the elite on the right day--I'm saying the Steelers AREN'T elite. I think they're the 3rd best team in the league, but the elite-status cutoff is after Indianapolis at #2.

Willie Parker is more of a yard producer than Bettis ever was(110 yards+ per game) and we have Najay Davenport to bang it across the goal line and get short yardage when needed. No drop off.

Randel El and Santonio Holmes are exchangable talents. Holmes also returns punts like El. Two rookies Woodley and Timmons filling in admirably for Porter exodus(dude was on backside of prime).

Dont tell me about any player loss along our lines as Parker runs and Ben is protected like never before and getting sacks and stopping the run continues to be the least of our problems no matter the regime(Cowher-Tomlin, philosophy unchanged).

SO YOU AGREE STEELERS ARE THE THIRD BEST TEAM IN THE LEAGUE. Well Fannation, its up to you: is the third best team in the entire league this year worthy of the ELITE? I say so and voted accordingly without a hint of Steel bias.

First, I brought up all the changes because your entire first argument was based on the Steelers' being the same team as two years ago, and they are not. And you didn't address the biggest difference, the coaching.

Elite status happens wherever there's a clear division between the best tier in the league, and the second-best tier in the league. Here's why the Patriots and Colts are significantly better than the Steelers:

A lot of fans underestimate how different a game against a division rival is. Because they play each other at least twice every single year, the teams know each other and are much more capable to cause an upset, or at least make a game closer than it should be.

The Patriots have decimated two division rivals. They beat the Bills BY MORE THAN THE STEELERS DID, and they beat the Jets by almost as much. Sure, the Steelers killed the Browns in similar fashion, but what's more impressive, beating a 2006 playoff team led by Chad Pennington or a 4-12 team led by Charlie Frye? And finally, you say the Chargers "look like garbage right now." They're not going 14-2, but "garbage" is a little harsh - they've played 3 fantastic defenses.

more below

Tomlin is 3-0 and so was Cowher in his rookie year. Coaching is the same philosophy except now Pitt is more dangerous, because now Ben throws more instead of always trying to work to get third and two for the Bus.

How great is that Bear defense? I think San Diego realizes it was the easiest of the 3 they have faced so far after watching Romo run a clinic on them two days ago. Chargers really arent much better at moving or stopping the ball right now anymore than the 49ers who the Steelers destroyed

Romo's "clinic" didn't really start until 3 of the Bears' Pro Bowlers were out for the game. San Diego had a whole game against those guys, plus half a game against Mike Brown and Dusty Dvoracek, who Romo didn't have to play. They were hardly playing against the same team.
"Coaching is the same philosophy except now Pitt is more dangerous, because now Ben throws more instead of always trying to work to get third and two for the Bus." - sounds like a different philosophy to me. Defensively they're still doing the same thing, which I applaud Tomlin for - I was afraid he'd try to do things his own way instead of letting LeBeau run. But this is a different team on offense.
The Patriots and Colts have been consistently good for years. And both look even better this year. No one else comes close.

Yes, Cassidy. Yes.

September 25, 2007  03:06 PM ET

You will have a different take after week 5. And you aren't the same team, you are missing the most important player(s) on that SB team. CROOKED REFS!!!

September 25, 2007  03:07 PM ET

Yes, they certainly miss those crooked refs.... Actually, so do I.

September 25, 2007  03:11 PM ET

September 25, 2007  03:12 PM ET

Well, I'm not, but I still agree. Anyone that watched that game and knows football should agree with that.

September 25, 2007  03:12 PM ET

Not bitter at all are you Goodell? LOL

September 25, 2007  03:13 PM ET

Pats, Colts, Steelers are pretty much the top three teams...

September 25, 2007  03:17 PM ET

I agree...they are top 3. That qualifies as elite to me.

September 25, 2007  03:17 PM ET

They play well in all facets of the game...very few can say that.

September 25, 2007  03:19 PM ET

Hey if I was a Bills fan like Goodell, I would say everybody else blows just because it would be the only football-related success I have experienced all year because THE BILLS BLOW GAMES BY DECIDING TO SHOW UP WITH THAT UNWINNABLE PERSONNEL EACH WEEK. The Steelers embarrased your franchise 26-3 two weeks ago. Unbitter yourself Roger.

September 25, 2007  03:44 PM ET

It's New England and Indy at "Elite" and Dallas, Pittsburgh, and Green Bay at "Darn Good."

September 25, 2007  04:05 PM ET

just a little dallas

September 25, 2007  04:25 PM ET

Vote to Cassidy to tie it up

September 25, 2007  04:39 PM ET

Patriots and Colts are the only Elite teams i see right now. but its still too early to brand the Steelers an Elite Team just yet. They are definitely a good team. With that said, my vote goes to Dan

September 25, 2007  04:45 PM ET

Too early to be elite? They have done EXACTLY what Pats have, destroyed inferior opponents. They are both elite and to suggest otherwise states a jealous denial is rigidly in place.

September 25, 2007  04:45 PM ET

argument 2 cont'd:

The Colts have won against far tougher opponents - Houston and Tennessee are looking like playoff-caliber teams, and both are division rivals, making them extra-troublesome. And of course, they slaughtered the Saints by more than Pittsburgh has beaten anybody by so far.

September 25, 2007  04:49 PM ET

Since Cassidy doesn't care about a truly good throwdown. I'll vote for other guy, and I'm not even reading the argument. I just read the title, agreed with Cassidy, but I'm going to vote against you.

How do ya like them apples?

September 25, 2007  04:51 PM ET

Steelers played Browns and Bills, both teams suck. They beat 49ers, who have NO offense whatsoever. While the Pats beat 2 playoff teams from last year in Jets and Chargers. I wouldnt actually call that doing the exact same things. Again, thats just my opinion.
