It was a tough decision, but eventually I chose the 1989-90 San Francisco 49ers, winners of Superbowl XXIV. They had Joe Montana having an MVP year and leading the NFL's number one offense, Jerry Rice pulling in 17 touchdowns, and Ronnie Lott leading a strong group of defenders. Star power is nice, but besides that, they just won games. Won them close, won them big, going 14-2 in the regular season. Their two losses came by 5 points, total. Once they got to the playoffs, their dominance truly showed, as they beat their three postseason opponents by a compined score of 126-16.

This team was built around the passing game, led by the two arguably greastest at their position. The team averaged 9.5 yards per passing attempt, an absurd statistic. Montana threw only 8 interceptions all season, to 26 touchdowns (plus three more rushing). This 49ers team was on quite a roll, having also won the previous Superbowl. Their confidence was sky-high, and it showed in the way they pushed their opponents around, and dominated their way through the postseason.

This is my first tournament so be gentle. You're right it is difficult to narrow down so many great teams to one. Look at the choices - Fins, Cowboys, 49ers, Steelers, how does one decide? What should one take into account as to what makes a good team the best? I don't know, but here goes my best effort. You made a fine choice by the way. I am going to buck tradition a bit and it may cost me but here goes nothing. I say the Jets in SB III

Are you friggin' crazy? Well, maybe but hear me out. The SB was started as way for the NFL to display its prowess. The NFL got all the attention and all the glory. The AFL was just a nuisance. So, the SB founders (which were mostly NFL execs) decided to have a championship game between the best of the NFL - the might Baltimore Colts and the best of the AFL - the lowly NY Jets. The first two SBs only further cemented the NFL's dominance. Then in 1969 along came the Jets with a cocky QB who would not be silenced and refused to believe the hype. Huge underdogs, the Jets pulled off the biggest upset in football at that time and established the legitimacy of the AFL.

Those Jets were a great story, to be sure, but they are far from any of the greatest Superbowl squads. That was way back in the early days of football, when offenses were simple, players were regular-sized guys, and games were generally sloppy. The sophistication of the '89 San Fran offense would leave them stunned. The schemes of their defense would have the Jets in total disarray.

Namath may have talked a good game, but his stats were nothing special. He completed 49% of his passes that year, with 15 tds to 17 interceptions. That type of play doesn't often go with a Superbowl winning QB. Nowadays, those stats will get you benched halfway through the season. If he were on the 49ers, he would never have seen the field.

The Jets may be the best Superbowl story, but they're not the best team. Not even top ten. Maybe not even top half.

This is still the greatest upset in SB history. If the Colts won that game it would have been 3 straight for the NFL. The AFL probably would have never recovered and we would not have the great NFC-AFC debates we enjoy today. The Colts were considered the cream of the crop. The Jets were inferior because they played in the AFL. Everyone knows about Namath's famous guarantee, but how many of you know that Coach Shula was scared at half time. A partial quote from his half-time speech: "We're making stupid mistakes, we're stopping ourselves. You've got them believing in themselves. You've got them believing that they're better than we are." This sounds like a desperate coach. In the end it didn't matter because the Jets continued to dominate the vaunted Colts. The game was never close. The Colts did not score until the 4th quarter when they were already down 16-0. Here's a question for you: Besides Namath, how many players can you name from that team? That's what I thought. How many can you name from the Colts? See what I mean, the Jets had a bunch of no name players. In fact, only Namath and Don Maynard are in the HOF from that team.

This is why the 1969 Jets were the best SB team

Greatest upset? Probably. Incredible story? Surely. But best team? Doubtful.

Match the 89-90 San Francisco team against any other superbowl winner, and they are the odds-on favorite, or close to it. They can hang with any team, past or present. Those Jets would be favored against few, if any, of the other championship teams. Most of them would blow them out of the water.

The 70's Steelers teams. The 70's Dallas teams. The 80's 49ers teams. The 90's Cowboys. The '85 Bears. The '72 Dolphins. The current Patriots. The '65 Packers. Parcells' Giants. The Broncos of the late 90's. The '01 Ravens. All of them would beat the Jets. They're simply outclassed. How many would beat the 49ers? Likely some of them. But not all of them, and not by much.

You're making it really tough to beat your arguments ;>) but I suppose that's the whole point. The real challenge here is proving that besides SB III being the best SB; is proving that the 1969 Jets were the best SB team. What is the best way to argue this? The Jets completely dominated what was regarded as the best team in football at that time. They never trailed and they forced 5 Colts turnovers. Namath complete 60% of his passes that game. Compare this to the 49ers, they had to come from behind to win (albeit a beautiful drive) against a lesser opponent. If it weren't for Jerry Rice, Montana would have never won MVP. Namath won the MVP without his best receiver - Maynard. He played but was injured and used as a decoy. The Jets, in that game, made the SB what it is today.

Does all of this mean that those Jets would beat the `89 49ers? No stinkin' way. The Jets are the best SB story and SB III was the best superbowl, but if those two teams met on the field, the 49ers would have a field day.

You picked the right team for this TD Rodclo and I humbly bow out. I don't think I would be able to garner enough votes to prevail, but I had to go out swinging.

72 phins

September 26, 2007  06:39 PM ET

72 Dolphins, No-Name defense.

September 27, 2007  06:55 PM ET

I probably won't get my last argument in until tomorrow. Sorry. Say, how do we get this TD back on the front page so people can see it?

September 27, 2007  09:48 PM ET

I dunno. I'm going to send out a link I guess...

September 27, 2007  09:56 PM ET

85 bears. Super-Bowl shuffle? Then 72 Dullphins. Then 89-90 49ers.

Have to go with the 49ers. That was a fun team to watch.

September 28, 2007  10:10 AM ET

I can't beleive no one picked the 72 fins. the only undefeated team in history. that would have won the TD.

September 28, 2007  10:35 AM ET

I don't remember what years they were, but the Niners hold the record for the longest road win streak. I think they went 2 years in a row or longer. I'd go with the Niners only because they didn't fizzle after one year. They played at a high level until the Cowboys emerged as a powerhouse.

September 28, 2007  10:57 AM ET

Remember folks, this is the best SB team, not the best season

September 28, 2007  11:09 AM ET

The TD was the best team, not the best story. Unfortunately, for Rodiculous, the 49ers are not the best team. The 79 Steeler team would of shut Montana down and made that wine and cheese defense of thiers chase Franco, Swann, and Stallworth all over the field, culminating in a Steel blowout to the tune of say 35-14. The Cowboys fans that got beat by us thought they had the best team ever until we took them down twice in the big game. Just ask em if they think Niners are best team ever and dont be suprised when they bust a gut laughing.

I have not done my homework on SB#, but for me was Giants over the Bills and the Scott Norwood missed FG. Giants were underdogs and probably outmanned. Parcell's earned his coaching pedigree on that game. The Gmen just kept grinding it out with ole OJ Anderson. All fans held their collective breath as Norwood attempted the FG.

You could also say Veniteri's make against the Panthers (that sucked) as the story in reverse.

All these great Super Bowls of the past .... yet nobody mentioned the greatest one of all .... The Very First One ! In 1967 Green Bay vs K City .... When The AFL played the NFL and the reason we are all here talking about it today .... * WoW * ...... and the Super Bowl was born .......yet its birth forgotten .....
peace brothers.........................................

I was this close | | to using that one, maybe I should have

September 28, 2007  12:57 PM ET

Without the first Super Bowl .... There would be no " Center Stage " for the players who rarely get national exposure ( ie: Seattle Seahawks for example) to be seen on footballs Greatest Stage.... They would still be floundering for local and cable tv coverage to get noticed and eventually become a player with star status

September 28, 2007  05:01 PM ET

Good luck in the rest of the NFL Nation tourney

September 28, 2007  05:04 PM ET

Next time I will go with the `93 Cowboys in SB XXVII

September 28, 2007  10:34 PM ET

Yep the '93 Cowboys were one of my other top choices.

BTW, the 49ers of Superbowl XXIV were the ones that beat Denver 55-10, not the ones that came from behind to beat Cincinnati. That was the year before.
