Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, and Michael Irvin.
Two of these guys are HOF's and the other is a future HOF. These three guys played together in the 90's and won 3 Super Bowl's.
Trok Aikman's Career Numbers: 2898/4715, 61.5%, 32942 Yds, 165 TD's, 141 INT's
Super Bowl Numbers: 56/80, 70%, 689 Yds, 5 TD's, 1 INT
Emmitt Smith is the All Time leader in Rushes, Rush Yds, Rush TD's, 2nd in Yds from Scrimmage, and 2nd in Rush/Receiving TD's. Emmitt Smith was a balanced running back. Regardless of how effective his OL was, he was still truely a special player.
Emmitt Smith's Career Numbers: 4409 Att, 18355 Yds, 4.2 Y/A, 164 TD's, 515 Rec, 3224 Yds, and 11 TD's.
Super Bowl Numbers: 70 Rush, 289 Yds, 4.1 Y/A, 5 TD's, 11 Rec, and 56 Yds.
Michael Irvin was the prime target for his great quarterback. Irvin was a force to be reckoned with in every game. He was so difficult to cover, because not only due to his talent but his own little push offs.
Michael Irvin's Career Numbers: 750 Rec, 11904 Yds, 15.9 Y/R, 65 TD's.
Super Bowl Numbers: 16 Rec, 255 Yds, 15.9 Y/R, and 2 TD's.
This honor has to go to "The Triplets".

I'd have to go with Joe Montana, Roger Craig, and Jerry Rice.
Each of our trios won 3 superbowls together.
However, my trio was only together for 5 years, whereas yours took nearly twice as much time (9 years) to win the same amount of superbowls. Montana was out with a significant back injury as well for one of those years too. So, one could argue that Montana-Craig-Rice won 3 superbowls in just 4 years together.
Joe Montana- Possibly the G.O.A.T.
Statistics alone can't convey how good he is.
HOWEVER, Montana still bests Aikman in most passing stats.
Montana- 8th all time completions, 9th passing yards, 8th passing TDs
Aikman- 13th all time completions, 22nd passing yards, 49th passing TDs
Moreover, Montana's the best postseason QB of all time. His postseason QB rating is 96.18. His superbowl passer rating is 127. He holds the record for most postseason TDs, and yards. His ability to come through in the clutch is off the charts (31 career 4th quarter comebacks!)
Jerry Rice- Happens to be the best WR of all time.
Holds almost every receiving record in existence. Great route runner, great hands, great blocking, and a tremendous work ethic that pushes him far ahead of Irvin.

"The Triplets" were together from 1990 to 1999. In 1989, the Cowboys wen't a dismal 1-15. In 1990 after drafting Emmitt Smith they shot up to 7-9. And from then on it was nothing but winning. In the span of 10 seasons they won 113 games for the Dallas Cowboys franchise. (Including Playoffs) From 1991 to 1996 "The Triplets" helped lead the Cowboys to 70 Regular Season wins and a 12-3 Playoff Record including 3 Super Bowl victories and 1 NFC Championship appearance. The NFC Championship loss in 1994 was to the eventual Super Bowl Champion SF 49ers led by Steve Young. Overall, "The Triplets" led the Dallas Cowboys to 7 Playoff Appearances in 10 seasons. That is success.
To me, guys like Joe Montana, Roger Craig, and Jerry Rice were phenomenal football players. There isn't any doubt about that. But, there numbers can be contributed "partially" to the fact that they were playing under Bill Walsh and his WCO. That was a system that the NFL had not seen before and was orchestrated perfectly by the 49ers. That was a run first style of offense that set up short and precise passing plays. ***Continue Argument #2 in Comments***

Walsh's system obviously played a role in the success of Montana, Rice, and Craig.
However, the year after Walsh left, the 49ers won the superbowl again. Joe Montana was 4th in passing TDs and 8th in passing yards despite missing 3 games of the season. Roger Craig ranked 6th in yards per scrimmage. Rice was 2nd in the league in receiving yards and TDs.
The success of my trio the very year after Walsh left shows he was not fully responsible for their accomplishments.
Your trio made the playoffs 7 out of their 10 years together. Impressive, but mine made it in each of their 6 seasons (I said it was 5 earlier, it was actually 6, sorry) together, and won the same amount of superbowls.
In the 6 year period, the 49ers amassed 71 victories, giving them a regular season winning % of close to 75 percent. The 49ers were just as good as the 'Boys in the regular season.
You mentioned how the 'triplets' went to 19 pro bowls total.
Rice and Montana alone went to 21.
Mac: The Day That Never Comes said 10/01, 06:40 PM
They won the Super Bowl again because George Seifert made sure that the WCO was continued. Seifert basically picked up where the mastermind Bill Walsh left off.
This is really just a matter of opinion. During the 6 year period your trio were together they were incredible. During the 6 year period (91-96) when the Cowboys were at their best they roughly had the same Regular Season Win % and also won 3 Super Bowl's. The 49ers blew people out in their Super Bowl's, so did the Cowboys. Your trio contains multiple HOF's, mine does as well. Your trio played under a perfect system ran by both Walsh and Seifert, my trio was blessed with a great defense and OL. Your trio has 2 players that are arguably the best ever at their position, and my trio contains one that is arguably the best at his position with 2 outstanding counterparts. Your trio were always at the top of the league in stats per season, and so was mine. Both trios produced Top 3 scoring offenses and great balance. There are Pro-Bowls galore between our trios.
Basically, take your pick. You want the perfect players in a perfect system, or the free wheeling triplets from Big D? Either way, both were dominant trios.
Basketball Jesus: CHAMPION! said 10/01, 07:05 PM
Honestly Mac, I think I'd have to agree with you. It really is a tossup between these 2 great trios.
As for Seifert, his attempt at implementing the West Coast offense as a coach of the Carolina Panthers failed miserably. No other team could pull off the West Coast offense like the 49ers of the late 80's could.
In short though, yes, it's just a matter of preference.

Roger Craig- Probably isn't as good as Smith, but doesn't that tremendous Cowboys O-line deserve some of the success? Didn't they all go to the pro bowl at one point?
Craig is one of only 2 backs to have 1000 yards receiving and rushing in a season. In one season he actually led the league in receptions (his 92 receptions actually was a record at the time).
While Smith is probably better than Craig, the gap between the 2 isn't as large as you might think. Bearing in mind how good the Boys O-line was, and Craig's receiving ability, the gap between the two isn't immense.
So, in my books Montana and Rice excel at their positions, while Smith does at his (but not by as much as you'd think.)

You talk about Emmitt Smith being given lanes to run through by his Pro-Bowl OL, well guys like Roger Craig were allowed to catch so many passes due to being in the WCO. Roger Craig was a solid and well balanced back, but there still is no comparison to the great Emmitt Smith. You saw how he is in the Top 3 in all of the major rushing categories. From 1991 to 1995, Smith was a Top 3 back in the NFL in total yards from scrimmage showing how balanced he was.
Overall, the nod must go to "The Triplets". They are ALL going to be HOF's soon once Smith is eligible. Between the 3 of them, there were 19 Total Pro Bowl seasons. I don't think there will ever be a trio that will rival the success that of Aikman, Smith, and Irvin.
