The only 2 quarterbacks who are better than Big Ben right now are Tom Brady and Peyton Manning, and with Manning's injury it's possible Roethlisberger will be the 2nd best quarterback in the NFL this season.
Before your right me off listen to these facts: Roethlisberger has been to the Superbowl 3 times and won it twice and he's only entering his 8th season! The only reason more people don't think of Ben as a top 3 QB or even a top 5 QB is because we live in a world controlled by fantasy sports and he doesn't put up big fantasy numbers. But he gets the job down. No one whose name isn't Michael Vick has more intangibles than the Steeler QB.
Don't try to argue Aaron Rodgers is better cause he was drafted just a year after Ben and has only played in 1 Superbowl, Vick had an amazing year last year but has never won a Superbowl. Don't argue Philip Rivers either cause he couldn't even get his team into the postseason last year and has never won a Superbowl.

Say what you want about regular season stats, but Ben is the guy that gets it done. He's who I want on my team day 1 cause I know theres a good chance we'll still be in it on the last day of the season. He is a playoff monster!

Ben is the right QB in the right system on the right team. He doesn't attempt to throw a lot of long passes, hard passes or try to win the game himself. He utilizes the entire team and his surroundings.

That makes him a very smart QB and a very good QB. Does that make him the 3rd best? I'm not sure if I'd go that far.

Last year (with missing a few games by suspension) his standings in the QB areas:

- 18th in yards (6th in yards per game... to judge fairly)
- 19th in TDs (13 TD's back of 5th place)
- 5th in passer rating

So if you look at last year's stats, he is definitely top 10 and borderline in top 5

How about 2009? Same stats:

- 7th in yards
- 26 TD with 12 INT
- 10th in total TD's
- 5th in passer rating

How about 2008? Same stats:

- 14th in yards
- 15th in TD's
- 17 TD's with 15 INT
- 24th in passer rating

The man steps it up in the playoffs. But winning the Superbowl doesn't necessarily make you a top 3 QB in the league. Football by far the most team oriented sport there is. Defense is just as important and you can't overlook special teams. Pittsburgh is notorious for their defense...

Heres the deal, in the regular season he is a top 5 quarterback, maybe not a top 3 in the regular season. But he is so amazing in the play-offs that that has to push him into the top 3. His style of just marching it down the field with the deep throws, and he does it in the most ridiculous circumstances. Last year against the Ravens in the play-offs the Steelers looked down and out, but thanks to Ben (and yes his defense helped but they got him into the whole in the first place) the Steelers had an amazing comeback to advance to the AFC Championship game, if I remember correctly Ben drove the Steelers down the field in the last 4 minutes of the game to win it. That's Ben's style, no other QB can play the game he does. He's the size of a polar bear and can dodge out of so many tackles and then make an amazing completion. And he plays injured like a boss. Remember last year when he played with an injured foot and broken nose. The guy is ridiculous. How can you argue he isn't a top 3 quarterback?

What QBs would you put ahead of him other than P. Manning and Brady?

"Heres the deal, in the regular season he is a top 5 quarterback, maybe not a top 3 in the regular season."

I may not agree with your first stance, but I have to respect a guy who states what he thinks and defends it with heart.

You just turned yellow and changed your stance. Now he's a top 5 QB? Don't wuss out.

"Ben drove the Steelers down the field in the last 4 minutes of the game to win it. That's Ben's style, no other QB can play the game he does. "

I'm pretty sure every QB in the league practices a 2 minute drill with his team and they have played the exact game style several times over the year and repeatedly in practice. Ben winning a few games with last minute drives doesn't seperate him from the pack. I've seen other QB's do that also.

Rivers, Rodgers and Brees are in the discussion for top 5 QB's IMO. Along with Ben. Rivers has better stats, but no Championsips. Ben has decent stats but several Championships.

If Ben is so awesome, how do you explain that his team went 3-1 with a very mediocre backup QB while he was suspended last year?

Forfeited Turn

Well you've done nothing to back up your claim.

No stats. No comparisons to other QB's.

No thoughtful points, other than "he has multiple superbowl wins" and "he can lead late 4th quarter comebacks."

While they are true, they aren't enough to sway me.

Don't try to argue Aaron Rodgers when Aaron Rodgers is the best QB in the league? Please.

August 25, 2011  10:51 PM ET

haha Aaron Rodgers is so overrated

I think you've got intangibles confused with tangibles.

August 25, 2011  10:55 PM ET

No I meant intangibles. You can't measure things like clutch situations and how he plays when the pocket collapses. Intangibles are aspects of a players game you can't measure with stats.

Well you can, because all of those things still count towards stats. If Ben pulls of a nice play when the pocket collapses, his smart move will be a completion, plus yardage, leading to points perhaps. On the other side, it counts as an interception, a sack, a fumble or at worst a punt and 0 points.

I'm not so sure scrambling out of the pocket falls under the category of intangibles.

Vick, Rodgers, Brees... and of course.. TEBOWWWWW.

August 25, 2011  11:21 PM ET

MAking it to the Superbowl is a team thing not a QB thing. The defense is way more important thant he offense in determining if a team will win the Superbowl. That is not one of my standards for determining a a good QB.

August 25, 2011  11:22 PM ET

Here is a TD I was going to do on offense vs defense which is more important. About 10 people took it then dropped it because they didn;t have a good **** argument.

"Since the 2002 season (9 season) 64 teams with a top 10 scoring defense have made the playoffs out of a possible 90. 61 teams with a top 10 scoring offense have made the playoffs within that same time span.

So it is close on which is more important to make the playoffs but defense has a slight edge.

During that same time span (last 9 seasons) there have been 36 teams in the conference championship games (CCG). 28 of them have had a top 10 defense. Only 22 have had a top 10 offense.

Only once in the last 9 seasons has there been more teams with a top offense than a top 10 defense. The other 8 season there were as many or more teams with a top 10 defense.

Also there has only been one year that less than 3 teams in the CCG with a top 10 defense. Only 4 (less than half) seasons have had 3 or more top 10 offenses in the CCG.

So having a great defense is more helpful for a team to advance deep into the playoffs and to the Superbowl.

Defense wins Championships."

How so?

He isn't the best quarterback in the league. Any one who says he is better than Brady is overrating him. No one touches Brady and a lot of people say Rodgers is the best.

thank you. its so ridiculous, how often people try to award super bowls to qb's. TEAMS win super bowls. bradshaw won four, does that mean he is better than any qb ever, not named montana? no frickin way.

August 26, 2011  12:20 AM ET

Actually Bradshaw is one of the greatest QBs of all time.

August 26, 2011  12:23 AM ET

Bradshaw is overrated.

August 26, 2011  12:28 AM ET

Lol, I cannot believe you are telling him not to argue. The only reason big ben makes it into the playoffs is his defense. He is middle of the pack when it comes to passing stats.
