My MLB lineup versus yours (Current Players only and include a DH)

I'll just give my players first and a brief explanation. More detail on the exact reasoning why I took one of these guys over someone else will come in my 2nd argument. (This is the batting order as well)

1. Ichiro LF - I know it's not his natural position but he can play anywhere out there.

2. Placido Polanco 2B - Best #2 hitter in the game. Great Fielder as well.

3. Albert Pujols 1B - .327, 32 HR, and 103 RBI in a "down year."

4. Alex Rodriguez 3B - Best player of this generation.

5. David Ortiz DH - Big Papi can still rake. As clutch as it gets.

6. Vladimir Guerrero RF - Vlad can still rake. Need at least one violent swinger.

7. Curtis Granderson CF - Do everything guy. Great defensive player.

8. Victor Martinez C - Best catcher in the game. Need someone to hit a sac fly after Granderson triples.

9. Jose Reyes SS - Most electric player in baseball. Reyes down here is like having another leadoff hitter.

There ya have it...that lineup has everything...speed, power, average, walks...you name it, we got it!

1. Ichrio, CF--he's gotta stay in his natural position. a .396 OBP this year is great, obvious "table setter."
2. Carl Crawford, LF--needs to cut down on his strikeouts (.355 OBP isn't too bad, though) but has a lot of pop from the 2 hole.
3. Chase Utley, 2B--hands down the best second baseman in baseball. .332/.410/.566/.976 is perfect for a number 3 hitter
4. A-Rod, 3B. come on.
5. Pujols, 1B. another no brainer
6. Carlos Pena, DH. just to change it up a bit. .627 SLG this year is crazy.
7. Magglio Ordonez, RF. another just to change, but it's not a bad change at all. out of his mind this year: .363/.434/.595 is wonderful.
8. Russell Martin, C. offensively pretty much equal to Martinez but 21 steals is an added bonus.
9. Hanley Ramriez, SS. higher average, higher obp, higher slugging than Reyes.

2B ??? Polanco fits is the most perfect #2 hitter anyone could ask for. He almost never strikes out, he advances the runner to 2nd base almost every time, and does all that while hitting .341 which is 9 points higher than Utley. Might not have the power numbers that Utley does (although not a large difference) but he makes up for it by doing exactly what a #2 hitter is supposed to. Also, Polanco made 0 errors this year! 0! That???s unheard of playing in 141 games with no errors.
OF ??? You put Crawford in over Granderson. When it comes to hitting it???s somewhat of a push???the difference for me comes in the field. Granderson was the best defensive CF in the game this year without question. He made a ridiculous amount of spectacular plays, had 10 OF assists, and saved a number of games with his defense. Nod to Curtis.
OF ??? You put Mags over Vlad. Ordonez had a great year and believe me as a Tiger???s fan I???d love to put him in there. But Vlad has been one of the 3 most consistent hitters of the past 10 years. In his 10 full seasons he had season averages of .325 Average, 36 HR, and 117 RBI???s. I???ll take those numbers (and that arm) over just about anyone.

I left Granderson out because I feel it's important to have guys play their natural positions. Ichrio is a better hitter than Granderson and is right on par with him fielding wise. I chose Crawford becuase of his speed and the fact that he is one of the finer fielding left fielders in Major League Baseball. Granderson may have the higher slugging percentage but that comes from his triples in spacious Comerica Park. Their OBPs are much closer and I'd rather put Crawford in the 2 spot than Granderson in the 7th (as an aside, he should not be batting leadoff for the Tigers, rather 5th and the same goes for Sizemore in Cleveland, but I digress...).

Polanco may have a higher average but Utley's slugging percentage is .108 points higher and his on base percentage is .22 points higher. Polanco's had a great year but Utley's is still better and his fielding is still pretty solid. He's also attempting more plays due to his 5.01 RF compared to Polanco's 4.89.

I more or less agree with Vlad but I just wanted to change things up a bit. I think this year is a showcase of what Mags can do when he is healthy. I don't think he's a .360 hitter but his OBP and SLG can definitely continue to be

Natural Position? Ichiro has played RF and CF extensively in the Majors already...so what would you consider his "natural position" to be? I would say flat-out he's simply an outfielder who can play any of the 3. Granderson has a better arm than Crawford and fields his position better. He also covers more ground...have to in Comerica.

My argument for Polanco is simply that he is the absolute best #2 hitter in the Majors. Hands down. I gave you the power numbers of Utley. But you can find a better #3 hitter than Utley, you can???t find a better #2 hitter than Polanco. Advantage Polanco. As for the fielding???0 errors in 141 games. Advantage Polanco.

As for the other 3 positions.
C ??? I looked at Martin but Victor is still better offensively and with the way Victor improved his defense this year, he became the best all-around catcher in the Majors.
SS ??? Reyes is simply the most electric player in baseball.
DH ??? Pena had a career year. Despite that career year, Papi???s numbers were still better. Big Papi is clutch, he???s become consistent, and more of a threat at the plate.

Reyes may be 'electric' (I hate that damn adjective) but Ramirez has better numbers, save for steals. Ramriez > Reyes.

Utley may have more errors but again, look at RF. he's attempting to make plays on balls that Polanco can't even get to. As for a better #2 hitter, there's a case for Derek Jeter. As an aside, Utley's numbers in the 2 spot for his career: .329/.393/.564. Polanco: .305/.348/.417

Hitting wise, Martinez and Martin are about the same and both play stellar defense. It's a wash.

I'd agree with Ortiz but I'm a) just going on this year (except for my comparsin above) and Pena had a better year. Both are good choices.

Granderson has a better arm becuase he's in CF and must have a better arm. I choose Ichiro over Granderson becuase, well, Ichiro is a better player than Curtis Granderson. Both are ridiculous on defense and very solid on offense. Ichiro would be a waste in LF, where the worst fielder usually goes.

i'll be leaving for class in about 45 minutes and won't be back til around 3 then i have a film class from 6-9 so if i take a while, i'm sorry and that's why. good luck.

yay 1 vote already (not mine).

My point about the #2 spot is that you don't need power to be a success. You need bat control, minimal strike outs, and consistently advancing the runner(s) to set up the big boys behind you. Polanco struck out an average of once every 20 AB's this season. While Utley struck out once every 5.9 AB's. And that was Utley's lowest strike out total in a full season of his career. Polanco's game and hitting ability were tailor made for the 2 hole in a lineup.

You can argue for Hanley all you want (he had a great year this year) but I'll take a guy who flat out makes things happen. You can call it what you want...electric, impactful or whatever...it's something you see by watching the game and not by looking at a stat sheet. The guy can just flat out make things happen on a baseball field.

"Granderson has a better arm because he's in CF" I don't get your argument there. So if he wasn't in CF he wouldn't have a good arm?! Not sure I'll follow your logic there...

Report Offensive Comment

Ichiro's arm would be wasted in LF and he's a better RF option than Vlad (whom I love, by the way). Vlad would be a better DH than Ortiz simply because he doesn't have to rely on hitting the big one, plus you don't have to pinch run for him late in the game.

The replacement in LF? Matt Holliday. How did both of you miss that one?

Report Offensive Comment

i mean that Granderson obviously has a stronger arm, which is why he's in CF instead of one of the corners.

yes, Polanco strikes out less; but, Utley still has a better OBP so that point is null and void.

i'm pretty sure that Hanley is making things happen by getting on base more (.386-.354 OBPs), is getting more bases per AB (.562-.421 SLG), and is a better hitter (much better average and much better OPS) and also has more win shares, 29-24. so, who's really making the impact? it's Ramirez by a long shot at the plate.

as for keeping Holliday (who i love) out, i think both of us were going for a more "complete" lineup instead of just the best players. if i were to put him in, he'd bad third and i'd move Utley up to second and remove Crawford.

Utley struck out 4 times on 13 pitches...is that what you want out of your #2 hitter?!
