Dookie: Here We Go Steelers said 10/03, 06:35 PM
It's October, and MLB playoff time yet again. I've heard the arguements all season, "The Sox/Yanks series are all hype and shown too much that they are starting to get old"
I couldn't disagree more...
It's the best rivalry in all of baseball, possibly all of sports. There is playoff history, and great storylines between the two year in and year out.
This year, A-Rod is comin into the postseaon with a career best year- but the question is still asked if he can produce when it matters.
Boston survived a near collapse at the end of the year to the surging yanks...and there is questions about the health of Manny and the durability of Dice-K
I know I personally hope the Sox take care of the Angels and the Yanks to take care of the Tribe. Then we all get the dream matchup of Sox/Yanks for bragging rights for another year....anyone else want to see a different ALCS matchup?

Personally, there is NO WAY I would like to see this. You know why? I'm bored of it. It was great until 2004, when the Red Sox finally broke through. Now it's just like watching the Yankees play the Yankees: two teams with the two highest payrolls in baseball going at each other. Both of them can buy/trade away their young talent for whoever they want.
I think the best ALCS will have the Indians in it. They have five young/rising stars in C.C. Sabathia, Fausto Carmona, Grady Sizemore, Travis Hafner, and Victor Martinez. They're a young team (avg age, 28.0) and they are a team. The Indians have the 23rd highest payroll in MLB. They're exciting to watch. They somehow tied for the best record in baseball.
I'd rather see the Indians in the ALCS than ANOTHER year of the same Red Sox-Yankees hype. It's just old.
Who else wants to see something new?
Dookie: Here We Go Steelers said 10/03, 06:57 PM
It was great until 2004 - but it has been better SINCE 2004. Before 2004, everyone knew the Yanks would prevail, and the only people who watched the series wanted to know how Boston would screw up that year. Ever since the Sox made that dramatic and historic comeback, this rivalry is up in the air.
This year, it could go either way, and the series will go atleast 6 games. If the Indians were to make it past the Yanks, their lineup can't compare to the Sox. Sure, they have great young/rising stars, but I will wait 5 years until they solidify themselves as stars. The kind of stars you see on the Sox and Yanks lineup. That???s what makes the series exciting. The Ortiz, Manny and Co. vs. Jeter and ARod. But if you want to see young/rising stars???check out the series for the probable AL rookie of the year???Dustin Pedroia. Like young pitching?? Check out Joba Chamberlain of the Yanks. This series has it all???stars, young talent, raw emotions, and great baseball???the stuff October is meant for.
DJTG_2010 said 10/03, 07:08 PM
I haven't seen that much emotion lately. Since the Red Sox broke the curse, there has been NO emotion. The pure emotion that the series brought out was the Red Sox trying to slay the Evil Empire. Now it's over. What are they playing for now?
List of players who played in Game 7 of the 2004 ALCS that are still on the Red Sox:
Manny Ramirez
David Ortiz
Jason Varitek
Mike Timlin
Yankees Players:
Derek Jeter
Alex Rodriguez
Hideki Matsui
Jorge Posada
Miguel Cabrera
Mariano Rivera
Obviously, there are still players left from that series, but it's not the same. What do the Red Sox have to play for now? They broke the curse. Now what?
"Oh, we finally beat the Yankees. Now we can join them and go out and sell off our young talent and buy the best players."
The Red Sox underdog persona has been lost since the curse. As I said before, it's like watching Yankees vs. Yankees. Who would want to watch that?
I'd much rather see the Indians or the Angels in the ALCS, not this Yankees-Red Sox crap.
Dookie: Here We Go Steelers said 10/03, 07:27 PM
Do you know anything about baseball? The Sox and Yanks are being praised this year for NOT selling off their young talent for stars and actually bringing up the talent through the organization. (See the Pedroia/Chamberlain above plus half of the Yanks starting rotation this year)
No emotion? c'mon, cut me a break, there hasn't been a fight since then, but what about when Youkilis got a fastball at his head this year from Joba that earned Joba an ejection? These teams hate each other more than the Hatfields and McCoys!!
As for your list of players who played in the 2004 ALCS-don???t exclude Shilling, Damon (who switched sides), Mientkiewicz (another switcher), Mirabelli, and Wakefield to name just a few you happened to forget.
Since 2004, the average fan might have lost interest in the series, but the true baseball fan should have gained interest in the series. I mean, the object of the playoffs is to see the best teams compete for the title of that year???s ???Best Team???. The best two teams are the Sox and Yanks year in and year out. It???s a shame they can???t play for the World Series, cuz these two teams are the most talented and most exciting to watch.
DJTG_2010 said 10/03, 07:50 PM
I'd like to think I knew something about baseball. Also, I did say that I did not get all the players who played in that series.
Anyway, there's a difference between playing with emotion and hating each other. Playing with emotion is challenging the hitter with the inside fastball and sliding in hard. Hating each other is throwing the ball behind that guy and slapping the ball out of the first baseman's glove. It doesn't seem like much, but it is.
Another reason not everyone wants to watch the Yanks and the Sox is because of overexposure. This is partly a special case for me because I live in an AL city, but it still affects everyone. ESPN can dedicate half hour shows to the Yankees and Red Sox before every series. Who (besides the diehards) wants to watch that? I'm a diehard baseball fan, and even I would skip that. Every time the Red Sox and Yankees are on TV, they get a nationally televised game. Every Saturday on Fox's Game of the Week, it's either the Yankees or Red Sox. I don't care if they're the best teams in baseball. Do you really want to watch them every single week?
It doesn't appear that everyone wants to see this series...

It is getting old, but it is still one of the most exciting playoff games in baseball. No matter what happens it seems like it's talked about forever.

As a Yanks fan, I would love it, but the title of this TD is so ridiculous. The Yanks and Red Sox are both the most loved teams...and the most hated. If that mkaes any sense.

Perfect sense coletrain. That series is the best rivalry in all of sports and most people would rather see one win over the other.

Good argument DJ...the whole sox vs yanks thing is old...i'm already sick of the yanks being in the playoffs every year while poor teams suffer...baseball really needs to work on its competitiveness...
