D.J. Dunson said 10/04, 03:26 PM
I've been an ardent supporter of Brian Brohm since he arrived at Louisville after his legendary high school career but in four years alot can happen. He's more athletic than the cardboard cutout Brian Brohm is and is a great decision maker as evidenced by his NCAA record 325 consecutive passes without an interception.
He rises to the occasion as evidenced by his final drive in Louisville and has improved considerably since the first time I saw him as a junior getting thrashed by Louisville in the first week of the 2006 season.
It happens every year. Quarterbacks get surpassed by surprising players. In 2007 it was Russell over Quinn, in 2004 Alex Smith's draft stock skyrocketed. He is the reigning SEC player of the year and shouldn't that count for something? The Big East has great teams but the SEC defenses that Woodson sees every week are amongst the best in the nation.
Dookie: Here We Go Steelers said 10/04, 03:46 PM
Q: who knows more about the NFL draft than anyone on the planet?
A: Mel Kiper Jr.
So i went to his website and found his top 5 senior QBs
1. Brohm
2. Woodson
3. Ryan
4. Booty
5. Dixon
The issue of this TD is not who is having a better season, or college career, but who will be a better pro-style QB, and therefore be drafter earlier...
Kiper compares Brohm to Jim Kelly and describes him as a polished passer.
Brohm's offense gears him more towards the pros then does Kentucky's.
D.J. Dunson said 10/04, 04:27 PM
Mel Kiper has lost all credibility with me because he has anthony morelli of penn state rated ahead of colt brennan. As for a better pro career I mentioned their college statistics because they're the only numbers we have to go by right now.
While it may be true that Brohm would look eerily familiar in a red and black Falcons uniform there's no GUARANTEE the falcons will finish high... or low enough(if you like to think of the glass half empty) enough to draft Brohm.
Todd McShay, ESPN U expert actually has Andre Woodson rated aboved Brohm. And part of it is because Brohm plays in a shotgun style offense that doesn't really translate to the NFL. Woodson has much better pocket presence and is used to lining up under center.
Also, his experience playing behind an average at best O-line should prepare him for the lack of protection that whatever crappy team drafts him will provide.
It's not about who's been hot longer but who's hot right now.
Dookie: Here We Go Steelers said 10/04, 04:44 PM
Of course its about who's been hot longer. Thats how the draft works. The Russell pick over Quinn will be marked as a tragedy for years to come.
Brohm will go to the Falcons if they have the top pick...I don't think anyone will argue that. To make the arguement a legit one, I'll assume that the Falcons figure outside of the top 10 picks
So lets look at the canidates for top pick as of week 4 (yes its early, but its all we have to go on)
Dolphins, Saints, and Rams are all winless. Of these 3 teams, only the Dolphin's are going to be looking QB if they finish that high.
Brohm has the intangibles that Woodson doesn't have. Brohm knows how to lead his team and win (although Woodson is showing he can lead and win so far, but lets wait until he's played some good SEC defense)
Woodon has a very slow, ackward release that NFL scouts are afraid will take too long to get the ball out of his hands at the next level
Brohm on the other hand has perfect NFL technique that coaches drool over.
D.J. Dunson said 10/04, 05:18 PM
Vince Young had the same worries about his side arm release and just like Woodson his passing has not been affected by it.
Scouts are always worried about something that's nothing new be it Matt Leinart's arm strength or Brady Quinn's accuracy.
The knock on Brohm has been his durability and his arm strength.
As for the statistics Brohm hasn't exactly faced any formidable defenses in Middle Tennessee St., Murray State, NC State(all near the bottom in passing statistics allowed) Syracuse or Kentucky, etc.
Lets not forget Woodson did play in the SEC last seasn too and still won SEC Player of the Year over Darren McFadden and tore through some of the best defenses in the nation.
Dookie: Here We Go Steelers said 10/04, 06:27 PM
Again...especially for the comments below...this argument isn't about the better college quarterback. Its about who will be drafted first (which i assume who will be a better pro quarterback).
In college football, dual threat quartbacks are great to have, and often pose challenges to defenses.
However, in the NFL, the majority of these dual threat quarterbacks are neautralized with the exceptions of amazing athletes such as Vick and Young.
NFL quarterbacks are typically pocket passers with the traditional style of delivery.
Brohm has those assets, and will be the better pro quarterback. Woodson is an amazing college football quarterbacks, probably the best this year (and he would get my Heisman vote as of today)
But the issue of this TD is who will get drafted first!
Brohm will be first, no doubt about it. He is ranked higher on everyone's draft board except McShay (McShay is a moron by the way)
Ignore who is a better college QB when voting and realize the question is about who will get drafted first...and the best college QB doesn't always translate to the best pro QB, especially when its a dual threat QB (PSU's M. Robinson)

Ooh. Bringing Mel Kiper into it. I might have to agree with DJ just because he disagrees with Kiper.

Brohm or Booty....Hands down
* Dixon too inconsistat with his throws and suffer alot from bad decision making.
*Woodson's stock will drop once he actually plays against decent teams but may rise a little come combine time.
Brohm and Booty were groomed for this their entire lives almost Manning like.

Booty is overhyped because he is the quarterback of the hottest team in the nation. He's great but the offense plays conservative with him behind center. He average yards per completion is near the lowest in the nation.
Against Washington those two pics almost did in the Trojans

RYAN FROM BC. He's being coached by Favre's old coach and also has had some help from Favre. He deserves more exposure to show what he can do.

Woodson is alot like Ohio State's Troy Smith but taller. He can be a dual threat but he isn't.He is a POCKET Quarterback. It may sound bad that I'm comparing them both because of their race but he's similar to Warren Moon than Mike Vick or Randall Cunningham.
He threw for more yards than Brady Quinn and Brohm last season(yes I know Brohm was injured a bit-durability). Woodson also had more passing touchdown's than Troy Smith.
And his completion percentage was even on par with Brohm and Quinn's. Point is he's one of the best PASSERS in the nation.

You managed to compare Woodson to every black QB but
Doug Williams. He reminds me a bit of Cullpepper who really has nothing in common with Smith, Vick or Cunningham besides the fact that they are black.
