If He Continues At this Rate Michael Crabtree Should Finish In The Top 3 of Heisman Voting

Michael Crabtree is just now starting to get attention nationally because of his record breaking numbers. ESPN.com's projections have him on pace to score 144 catches, 2200 yards, and 34 touchdowns, ALL of which would be NCAA records. His numbers defy convention because those three single season records belong to three different individuals. To own all 3 single season records at once would be unimaginable.
There's been no consensus Heisman favorites as there were last season, Pat White will not win it and Steve Slaton pulled up lame against South Florida. Unlike Colt Brennan, Crabtree plays in the Big 12, John David Booty is out of the running after tonight's dud and Andre Woodson might not even be the best COLLEGE quarterback in the SEC.
He won't win it because he is a freshman and a receiver, but Michael Crabtree deserves to be in New York for the Heisman ceremony.

This really reminds me of a certain QB.

Colt Brennan of Hawaii broke the single season record for TD passes in a season last year, and he didn't finish in the top five on the heisman ballot. The reason he didn't receive votes are the same reasons that Crabtree won't finish in the top three in heisman voting this year. The teams they play for have a pass heavy offensive system.

TT isn't a highly touted program in College football. They may be 5-1, but they have beaten Southern Methodist, UTEP, Rice, Northwestern State, and Iowa State. Hardly the competition that a heisman candidate would face over the course of a season.

Their Quarterback has 2301 passing yards to go along with a 24/2 touchdown/interception output. If Crabtree gets heisman recognition, shouldn't this guy get it too? He is on pace to eclipse 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns.

Andre Ware, and Ty Detmer both played pass heavy offenses and actually won the Heisman but they played in weaker conferences at the time. I never actually dismissed Harrell as a Heisman Trophy candidate, I just endorsed Crabtree. Texas Tech has utilized the Run & Shoot for years but they've never had production like this from a single receiver. He made mincemeat of Oklahoma State's secondary. They zoned, they doubleteamed and he still racked up 14 catches and 237 yards receiving.

Andre Ware and Ty Detmer won the Heisman award in back to back years nearly 20 years ago. Since, no school that wasn't top caliber has had a heisman winner on their roster.

Like I said, Colt Brennan broke the Touchdown record last year, and wasn't even in the top five for heisman voting. Why should Crabtree finish top three just for breaking a record?

Only two wide receivers have ever won the award. Their respective schools, Notre Dame and Michigan. MUCH bigger programs than Texas Tech

They have used the Pass heavy offense, just as Hawaii has, and Brennan still didn't get votes last year with all the records he broke.

You have to look at these through a case by case basis. This isn't an award for best pro potential(not to say Crabtree would be a bad pro), its the most outstanding player award. Crabtree was the most highly touted recruit TTech has ever brought in on offense and an impact player on a 4-1 team.

They'll probably finish with more than one loss but as long as it isn't the fault of the offense it should not be placed his shoulders. No receiver has ever had this type of season in ANY system. The disparity between Crabtree and the Red Raider leading receiver is a whopping 13 touchdowns, 400 yards and 16 catches!

The crux of the argument is that he continues this production against the remainder of their Big 12 schedule including the likes of Texas and Oklahoma in November. An upset or would force voters to seriously consider his achievements.

The Raiders are a completely one sided offense. His performance on a pass heavy team is not as impressive as if he did it for a school with a more balanced attack. The Raiders have over 3,000 yards of passing, but less than 500 yards rushing. If it was more balanced, then yes, he would deserve heisman hype, but as it stands, he doesn't.

Colt Brenna had a season last year no other QB has had, and he still did not win it.

The odds of a TT player getting any recognition is far fetched as is. It's an award decided by sports writers, and players from bigger programs dominate the voting.

Not that he doesn't deserve recognition for what he is doing, but not heisman recognition.

Man, I knew I had seen this before. Sorry DJ, it looks like I completely ripped the part of your argument where you stated their record and who they beat.

Texas Tech doesn't deserve a Heisman. They run a pass heavy offense. This Heisman is Glenn Dorsey's to lose.

October 7, 2007  09:27 AM ET

he deserves to BE there but not win it.... if he keeps this up he could be in the race for it though.

Brennan plays in a much easier conference. Nobody else is putting up numbers like this guy

TDs and receiving yards are almost meaningless stats in system offenses. Given that TTU will line up in the shotgun to throw inside the 5 yard line, Crabtree's numbers are not surprising. Leach's offense relies upon the short outs, and allowing the WRs to do the work.

Why do you think that BJ Symons, Kliff Kingsbury, et. al were never considered for Heisman consideration? Because TTU is looked as a gimmicky system that tries to disguise an average football team behind an effective offense. If this offense was producing a chance at a Big 12 Title, then they might get some consideration.

If the Heisman was purely stat-based, then there would be no other people invited to New York other than those who played on Hawaii, Texas Tech, or Navy.

I mean, I guess the best example is 'why wasn't Timmy Chang invited to New York?'

Glenn Dorsey was invisible against Florida. Oh, wait, he had a half a sack in the first quarter. My bad. I hope Dorsey has his mantle clear. He's a shoe-in with that kind of impact.

Here is the type of person you are going against, see below:

Haha, yes, and if you try and td against any one of my profiles, I will destroy you with my multiple accounts. I love easy wins, it's what I do, especially if I'm beating TBT in a td 11-4, in a TD that he MADE!!!!

its cool I understand if you have a life outside of fannation.

Michael Crabtree has to finish above Ray Rice, Pat White, Steve Slaton, and Glenn Dorsey (Yea i said it what). It's not happening anytime soon.

October 9, 2007  02:13 PM ET

Yeah but Steve Slaton, Ray Rice have had a few less than stellar performances and a defensive tackle(specifically) wont win it.

Vote to Pecotafreak. Great argument.
