I'd like to tell myself that the title of this TD is clever, but it really isn't. Anyways, this is a DEFEND YOURSELF throwdown. In your throwdown about picking blah blah blah homerun leader blah blah, you said that the Angel's offense was not a top 5 offense in the AL.

Let's take a closer look at that.

I know the past two years the Angels haven't scored a whole lot of runs and they've relied on "old fossils like Abreu and Hunter" to carry their team.

BUT

This is without a healthy Kendrys Morales AND Albert Pujols.

Last year they scored 667 runs, good for 10th in the AL. Let's say Morales and Pujols create ONLY 100 runs between the two of them (and that's being extremely conservative). That alone vaults them into 5th in the AL. But do you really think 2 of the best hitters in baseball are only going to generate 100 runs between the two of them?

I sure don't.

The Angels will have a top 5 offense in 2012.

What I actually said was that without Pujols/Morales the Angels lineup isn't top 5. Just for context I would like to provide the readers with the actual series of comments:

MF: ...if Morales comes back as good as he was pre-injury the Angels are going to have a really scary portion of their lineup. Of course the rest of their lineup still leaves a lot to be desired but their 3-4 (or 4-5) hitters could be really nasty.

KMac: The rest of their lineup isn't horrible. I would say top 5 in the AL.

MF: Top 5? The Angels lineup? Maybe with Pujols and Morales (if he's who we think he is), but the rest of their lineup is really really bad. Trumbo has good power but he can't get on base to save his life. And not one Angel had a batting average over .290 or an OBP over .370 last year. I know you're a big time Angels fan and I can see why you're excited about the pitching staff and Pujols/Morales, but the rest of their team is EXTREMELY offensively-deficient. Hopefully Trout is as good as advertised because they're gonna need all the help they can get.

We can argue the Angels not being top 5 even with AP/KM if you want but I never said that.

Qui gives a ****?

With that staff, an average offense is going to make some noise.

Yankees
Rangers
Boston
Toronto
Detroit

All better. At best they are 6th. Royals and Rays maybe better too.

Putting too much stock in Morales.

Those main five that I mentioned are all at one level. The Angels are in a totally different, lower, level. They are a notch below.

The top three you mentioned are kind of on one level. Then Detroit's on it's on level. Then the Blue Jays and Royals are in a lower level than that. Then you've got the Angels.

Yes, Toronto.

I suppose you could have meant does Toronto belong listed with those other four and the answer is no. Sorry.

I should have responded:

Sort of, Toronto.

Major flaw already in argument one. It isn't a question whether Pujols and Morales generate 100 runs this season. They have to generate 100 runs more than the guys they replaced.

Hadn't considered Toronto. They drive in a lot of runs.

So you don't think Pujols and Morales will generate 100 more runs than Abreu and Callaspo?

It's possible but it's not a given.Abreu/Callaspo combined to score 108 runs and drive in 106. If Pujols and Morales both play as well as they potentially can then they'll probably generate 100 runs more than last year's Angels team but it's pretty questionable with Kendrys coming back from a MAJOR surgery.

It's not like Morales has had 2 years to recover or anything. No big deal.

And you have to figure guys like Trumbo will probably drive in fewer with Pujols and Morales in the lineup. It's far from a given that they'd score an additional 100 runs.
