sport??? ???/sp??rt, spo??rt/ Show Spelled[spawrt, spohrt] Show IPA
noun
1. an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.
2. a particular form of this, especially in the out of doors.
3. diversion; recreation; pleasant pastime.
4. jest; fun; mirth; pleasantry: What he said in sport was taken seriously.
5. mockery; ridicule; derision: They made sport of him.
Now this is just one site that defines the word Sport. How many do I need to post to convince you and Fan Nation that Hunting and Fishing is a Sport?
You can take the first three definitions given here and apply them each and every one to Hunting and Fishing.
I guess you think that the Bass Masters Classic is what; Just a Social Event?
Now, I wonder what it would be considered if one hunted Grizzly with a Recurve Bow? (Besides extremely dangerous)
Believe it or not a round or oval ball DOES NOT have to be used for something to be a Sport.
Just about anything taken to a certain level of competition can be considered sporting.
And, BTW, I am making Sport of you.

So tell me who the world champion of squirrel hunting is. Heck, how about the city champion of whatever podunk nothing town you live in is. I know that electricity is rare in Toothlessville, but out in the real world we don't care one lick about who the "best hunter" is. And judging by the internet...you know, that thing you're accessing with that puter thingy on your dining room table (probably a telephone cable spool, but we don't need to go there).
Whine all you want, but catching a fish or shooting a squirrel isn't exactly difficult. My 4 year old can catch a fish. Who gives a rip?
And while we are discussing this internet thingy you've yet to master, try and learn that using some other program to write and then cutting and pasting into Fannation causes ignorant looking "????" all over your page instead of intelligent discussion.
But hey, asking someone who thinks shooting a squirrel makes them an athlete to understand electronics and grammar is probably a waste of time anyway.
So go kill something. I'm sure momma is so proud when you bring home the possum for dinner. Wow, big challenge. Killing an animal just hanging there in the tree.

I am actually less educated and dumber for reading that drivel you just posted. I think I had rather you just let his thing die than choke on my own regurgitation from having read that nonsense.
I will try to DUMB DOWN this conversation to a degree that you can understand.
#1. I am the WC Squirrel hunter. So there.
#2. No one said that a sport has to be difficult.
#3. It is just like you to avoid the topic by going off on some tangent about my background and envrionmental upbringing. There was a time when hunting and fishing was meant as a survival technique but the invent of supermarkets just about eliminated that necessity. However, during the years of getting there, people learned to actually enjoy getting outside and into the woods, lakes and streams to hunt or fish. That was when they both became a sport. Ever heard of catch and release?
#4. Hopefully you will take your 2nd argument and actually make a reasonable stab at trying to explain why hunting and fishing is NOT a sport. I am sure the readers would like to read more that just, Because I said so.
Okay Sport, your turn.

You could have stopped at dumber.
If you are a hunter, and think you are an athlete because of that, then you are a hunter who happens to be an idiot. And idiots shouldn't be allowed to carry weapons. Although with what I've read, I'm shocked you haven't shot yourself yet.
Nobody said a sport had to be difficult...but they did say it had to be a sport.
Speaking of supermarkets, I bought some buffalo meat at King Soopers today. Does that qualify me for the Olympics? Isn't it as difficult to find a great deal in a supermarket as it is to find a big old dumb deer standing in a field? Or dangling a work in front of a fish that doesn't remember where it was 5 seconds ago? Food! Hook! Damn!
There is no argument here. You are wrong. Period. And stupid.

Again, you have fallen into the fallacy that a sport requires someone to be an athlete.
It is just amazing that after 2000 plus years, You have figured out that only the games and entertainment venues we participate in that are sports are thoseYOU say qualify to make the list.

Websters Defines
Definition of HUNT
transitive verb
1a : to pursue for food or in sport
Definition of FISHING
1: the sport or business of catching fish.
Notice that the first definition both include the word sport. So, I guess you are smarter than Websters as well.
I will give you credit for having the balls to show. GL , Sport!

So where on your Olympic list do I find shooting squirrels and catching bream? You undermine your entire argument by proving that the biggest sporting body on earth says what you do on Saturday afternoon isn't a sport. I know it makes you feel like an athlete by saying the catfish you caught for dinner makes you a world class athlete, but guess what....YOU'RE NOT!
I can't imagine what it would take to get you off your high horse and get you to admit that casting a line into the water and pulling out a minnow doesn't qualify you for some sort of multi-million dollar compensation.
I can only imagine the conversation at your house when a friend pulls up to see you laying on the ground. "Help, I broke my leg!"
"how?"
"I was trying to qualify for the London Games by shooting a dove over there. I tripped and broke my leg"
"So why didn't you call 911?"
"He was sittin on the telephone wire when I shot at him. Missed the bird, but took out all the phone lines"
"Wow, can I get your autograph? You are a true sporting role model"
And I don't need luck. I don't care. Your friends all voted for you. I don't have any friends on the site. I win 16-0.

They are sports, just not athletic sports, for the most part.

Sports = anything competitive in which someone or some team is trying to win.
My 2 cents.

It would be a lot more sporting if the hunter didn't use weapons (or if bears and deers could be .taught to shoot back)

Only if ya never shoot anything, but don't tell all the people who go to deer camp every year!
However, the onew that go just to drink beer and hang out in the woods probably already know this.
