ESPN's Chris Broussard is reporting that the Orlando Magic are going to visit with Shaquille O'Neal next week to discuss their GM vacancy.
A joke? Nope. The Magic are seriously entertaining the idea of hiring the Big Shaqtus to run their basketball team. Like for real. Not a joke; not a publicity stunt. For realsies.
Crazy stuff, man, just completely cray-cray.
So, should the Magic actually hire Shaq as GM?
I say heavens no. Nein. Nyet. Non. Chigau. And any other version of "hell no; are you ****-ing kidding me?"
The Magic are teetering on the brink of irrelevancy, contingent upon whether or not Dwight Howard decides to stay in Orlando.
It's a ridiculous notion that Shaq is a good candidate.
Shaq is an entertainer; a comedian; a clown; an actor; a (really bad) rapper. He's not a GM.
For crying out loud, he's the guy who once sang a song asking Kobe Bryant how his butt tastes, and the Magic are seriously considering making him the GM of Mickey Mouse's hometown basketball team. What a joke.
Shaq (in)famously ditched Orlando for La-La land back in 1996. How the deuce is he supposed to convince Howard to do differently than himself?

What does Shaq's off court ventures have to do with him being any good as a GM? In fact none of it has anything to do with him being an NBA executive. So, color me confused why someone would just say, "he'd be no good because he made movies and rapped." Hell Ronald Reagan was an actor before he became president.
Now you say the Magic are teetering on the brink of irrelevancy based on Dwight Howard's status. Then, why not bring Shaq in, who has been a confidante to Howard and someone who Howard trust and respects?
Larry Bird was named executive of the year this past season. This is the same guy who got drunk and in bar fights on a weekly basis in South Boston. He also once said his team played like a bunch of women after a playoff game.
None of that changed the fact that Bird knows his basketball. Is Shaq a clown a lot of the time? Sure, but the man has been around the game for 20 years. he knows the ins and outs of the league.
We've seen former star players become successful GM's. Jerry West and Bird come to mind.
Sure he might not be experienced enough, but you pair him with an experienced exec to work with. Once they retain Howard then it was the right hire.

He also has 4 rap/hip hop albums, If the Magic do sign him I really can't see anything but a huge failure from Shaq.

IF they hired him it would only serve to prove what many of us think anyway; it does not take much brains to run a NBA team.

I think Shaq could succeed at just about anything he puts his mind to, but I wouldn't think he would want to do the day to day work that is required of a GM.
He seems more the owner type.
