a tradition of people hating each other, coming together for a common goal..

5. 1972 munich olympics..
terrorists killing a bunch of israeli team mates..
sometimes political can be ugly too..

9. A greek guy doing 3 marathons, with an arrow in his stomache..
a legend being born..

10. Usa beating ussr in hockey..

1. Jessie Owens

2. Louis vs Schmeling
Even President Roosevelt was in Louis's corner. What is even more amazing was the friendship Schmeling and Louis had after their years away from the ring.

3. Munich Massacre - 1972
A senseless act of violence left 11 people killed and introduced another form of terror to the World.

4. Black Power Salute/Human Rights Salute
"If I win, I am American, not a black American. But if I did something bad, then they would say I am a Negro..." Tommie Smith

5. Jackie Robinson

6. 1980 Summer Olympics boycott
The Boycott by the Free Nations lead to the Communist Bloc boycotting the next S. Olympics.

7. 1980 USA wins over Russia
A team of amateurs winning over a Soviet team that had just beat an NHL All-Star team, almost makes up for the 1980 S. Olympics boycott.

8. Ali refusing to fight in Vietnam. America still has left the question open, Draft Dodger or Anti-war Hero.

9. Super Bowl XXV
America stood tall and delivered to the World another fine SB during the 1st Gulf War.

10. The Hand of God by Maradona
This was sweet revenge for the Falklands War defeat. Some say it was divine intervention, majority knows better.

Solid list..
i prefer mine ha ha..

Both lists go to show you that sports are a huge deal for society..
we often come together and bond through sports..
the greeks hoped that conflict could be avoided through sports..

What next?
a gay man coming out of the closet..
a female golfer winning a pga event..
serena williams kickin a males booty in the olympic mixed doubles,
(that is such a cool event, mixed doubles actually means something now)..

Laters

You have some errors on your list.

Martina Navratilova was not the 1st Gay Champion in Pro Tennis to come out, that distinction goes to Billie Jean King. BJK, who was married to a man before admitting to be a Lesbian, was outed by a jilted ex-lover. So when Navratilova decided to come out, the thunder was already taken away BJK.

SB XXV was played during the height of the 1st Gulf War. Playing the game helped symbolize many things, and both teams that participated were clad in Red-White-Blue uniforms gave a Patriotic unity throughout our Nation. Add to the mix Whitney Houston's rendition of the National Anthem, America got a boost of confidence and helped bring the Nation together during this time of conflict. This helped prepare America for how it should deal with Professional Sports post a 911 tragedy.

The Munich Massacre of 72 should be ranked higher than the Iraq Soccer team and your pick of playing Doubles tennis. A tragic event passed by a Iraq soccer team and Doubles Tennis is what I would consider an error. And you don't have the controversial decision made by Ali nor the Boycotting of the S. Olympics which ruined the chances of a generation of Athletes.

I stand by my 2nd and 1st argument

Fair enough. I do like some of of your choices, but a few of them are a little off the wall and doesn't carry as much of the political statement that several events on my list has. Thanks for the throwdown HighwayCrossingFrog.

Tommie Smith/John Carlos, Mexico 1968, heads bowed, black gloved hands raised on podium while US anthem plays.

I have that amongst three changes I have, but looking to make sure I'm not missing anything else...

I don't feel like doing this anymore.

My three changes were...

#3 - 1968 Olympics Black Power Salute
#7 - Muhammad Ali refusing to be drafted into the military
#10 - 1972 Summit Series

HCK. I can't believe you of all people left off the 1981 Springbok tour of New Zealand that left a country divided and the 1995 Springbok Rugby World Cup victory that united a country. Two very big moments in the world of sporting events.

That was something but I don't think awesome is the right word.I don't get why people think the "power" movement is cool, whether it happens to be black power or white power.IMO that kind of stuff is where outright racism springs from. The whole "protesting for humanity" aspect is ok and all that but when people start proclaiming how down they are with their skin color it's just a hop, skip, and a jump away from ethnic cleansing and the like.

Don't see awesome anywhere before you said it.

1968 was a time that was way different than now right there in your Excited States. Not just overseas although that was happening too.

It was a big a politcal statement as almost any.

Ali refusing aforementioned Vietnam was also huge.

Stuff like one hockey team amateur or not winning a series is nothing compared to that.

2. Jackie Robinson breaking the colour barrier in baseball

8. Martina navartalova becomin a gay champion

WTF do these have to do with politics?

Those two plus NOT having the 1980 Olympic boycott FOR POLITICAL REASONS on your list makes this an easy vote right.

"a female golfer winning a pga event.."This will NEVER happen.

Nope. Only once has a woman ever even made the cut in a PGA event and that was 67 years ago. Even THAT would never happen today.

the greeks hoped that conflict could be avoided through sports..

Why do you just make stuff up in your arguments?

The modern Olympics were founded by a Frenchman, not the Greeks (though the first games were held in Athens) and had nothing at all to do with "avoiding conflict through sports" in fact, it was quite the opposite. His realization was that the most well rounded individuals around the world were those who participated in regular exercise, specifically sports. He attributed his country (France) losing a war with Germany to a lack of physical conditioning by the French soldiers and believed active participation in sports would solve that problem.

If you are referring to the ancient Olympics your premise is even more absurd. The legend is they were founded by Heracles, son of Zeus and Nephew of Ares The god of War. They were pagan in nature and more pomp than international competition. The first ancient Olympics we have a record of consisted of exactly 1 event.

Sports were considered a good way to prepare for battle, not avoid it.

QUOTE(#17):

So was Jupiter and Mars, and They were Pagans too [way before the main flavours of today.]So what happened too the Pagans? I would imagine, praying too any symbol was just as important too them, or more so, than today. As more peeps have been killed by religeous reasons and/or more than any other cause whatsoever.

What do you mean what happened to them? There are still pagan's to this day.

And what fool told you more people have been killed for religious reasons than any other cause? The most murderous despots and regime's in history have all been ANTI religion...Hitler, Mao, Lenin, Stalin, Pol Pot etc. etc. What did WWI or WWII have to do with religion? The most deaths have occurred either from war, ethnic cleansing, or population control usually in pursuit of power and/or property/wealth. Not religion.

Like some deity is new and improve and worthy of love above all others.

All schmucks to me.

What was the paraphrased line from Game of Thrones (Peter Dinklage), "The God of Fire wants people burned, the God of Water wants people dronwed. Where is the God of Mammaries and Wine?"
