The Detroit Lions would've been better off just skipping the 2011 NFL Draft.

The Lions had 5 draft choices in 2011, and 80% of those picks were spent on bad eggs. Here's a recap, with reasons why the Lions would've been better off taking a pass:

1st round, Nick Fairley

Fairley just keeps getting in trouble, as he has been arrested twice in the past two months. Fairley is looking at an arraignment in July for possession of marijuana and his more recent transgression involved allegedly driving under the influence and attempting to elude police. Fairley, the alleged crown jewel of the Lions' 2011 draft, now has more arrests in the last two months than he has sacks in his career. Pathetic.

2nd round, Titus Young and Mikel LeShoure

I loved Young at Boise St. Perhaps he should've just stayed at Boise. Last Monday Young sucker-punched teammate Louis Delmas during an OTA. Young was asked to leave the Lions' facilities.

LeShoure has been arrested twice this year for marijuana possession, meaning he has more marijuana-related arrests than career rushing yards. Pathetic.

7th round, Johnny Culbreath

Arrested for --what else?-- marijuana possession earlier this year.

5th round, Doug Hogue, is the only exception.

Let me summarize your point:
A player can not make an impact for his team, regardless of his skill level, if he's not able to make it to the field.

Fairley, Young and LeShoure have big salaries, but with escape clauses and insurance policies.

Detroit would be on the hook for these salaries if the players just plain sucked, but they can easily walk away as result of these legal issues.

The cost of these players can be negligible, however:

[Ticket sales
2010 Detroit
Leading passer: Shaun Hill Not Stafford
Season record: 6-10
Home ticket sales (per ESPN): 56,225/game

2011 Tix sales:63,742/g

Majority of sales have to do with Stafford and the team having a winning record as the season went on. However, early season sales had a lot to do with the hype coming from a highly touted draft.

Youth
Fairley's a DT, not a DE. He's supposed to be a run stopper, and free up DEs on pass rush. No real good individual stat for his position.

Young- Shown the potential to be a good #2. Fights happen all the time, and this is just OTAs. Better to send a signal to him now than later. He'll be fine...

Stick that in your pipe... MTC

Well I stuck it in my pipe but that **** just wouldn't burn, so I want my money back. Gotta find me a good dealer... :/

Anyway, let's not pretend that the Lions' increased gate revenue was a direct result of the Lions' 2011 draft. Fans didn't plunk down 100 bucks (or whatever) to go see Nick Fairley or Titus Young or any of the other draftees. There may have been a few people here and there who just had to see Doug Hogue (doubtful, but who knows; his mom might have bought a ticket or two). Stafford, Megatron, etc.. those are the guys people pay to see. Heck, Leshoure never even plaed a down, so I can promise you nobody paid to go see him!

Anyhoo, my point still stands - Detroit should've just skipped the draft. They got nothing in terms of production, and the off the field problems have simply served to tarnish the reputation of the team. Not only that, but Titus Young was sent home for sucker punching a teammate!

This is the time of year that players are supposed to be working together and developing a rapport, not worrying about a rogue teammate creeping up from behind and trying to injure you.

Bottom line, nothing good came out of the 2011 draft for Detroit.

Why can't we relate the direct gate revenue to the 2011 draft?

It certainly wasn't because of Stafford, Megatron, and Best:
- 2010 was yet another losing season
- Stafford failed to complete another season without getting hurt, or a winning record
- The coaching staff was the same

So what variable changed that would make fans want to go to the game... FAs... no major signings... guess that leaves the rookies.

Not saying (Stafford, Megatron, etc.) don't draw attention, but going into the season, based off of previous performance they're either going to draw the same amount or less fans to the game.

However, the hype surrounding Fairley with Suh was high. People were talking about how they weill have the best DL in the league, and Schwartz will have the D in place like in Tenn that got him the job.

Young was a going to complement Megatron and give Stafford a better chance to perform.

LeShoure was hurt in pre-season, but that doesn't mean he didn't bring some hope to season ticket sales.

Finally it is too early to say these players' careers are over. They have made mistakes, but not Rae Carruth size mistakes. They have million $ reasons to learn from them too.

People don't line up to see some rooke defensive tackle play football. They just don't. The NFL is an offense driven League and the Lions in particular are one of the more heavily offense-oriented teams, and it just doesn't make sense to think thousands of fans bought tickets because they just had to see Nick Fairley. Fans go for the stars; Stafford, Megatron, etc.

Anyway, here's the dealio - so far the Lions haven't had a positive impact from their entire 2011 draft class. Yes, Titus Young put up mildly decent numbers, but the negativity he brought with the Delmas fight surely outweighs his 6 TDs. And as I stated previously, Young was the only member of the 2011 draft class to do anything positive on the field.

As of right now, the Lions have minimal production from their draft class but a whole new set of headaches; the in-house fighting, the lack of production, the multiple marijuana arrests, the DUIs, etc.

As of this moment in time, the Lions abosolutely would've been better off skipping the entire draft altogether. They would've saved themselves millions of dollars and a ton of bad publicity. Potential isn't worth the price they've already paid.

OTAs?, We're talking about OTAs? Training camp doesn't even start for another 2 months, and we're a solid 3 months away from some football that means anything.

Detroit can take a harder stance with Young getting in a fight now, becuase it is OTA. If this was the middle of the regular season, and he did that... well you have another discussion coming.

The way you have to look at this is Young is in a timeout like a elementary kid for fighting. As he should be. You don't sucker punch another person (Steve Smith). Does this mean he's a bad football player and his career is over? NO

As for his so-so stats last season they're very impressive for a rookie WR. WR is one of the toughest positions to come in and make and impact. The routes, timing, etc. is way more complicated at the NFL level. This is why most WRs don't make a significant impact until year 3.

Weed
These guys are idiots for getting busted with it, and risking million dollar contracts over it. However, this doesn't mean they're harden criminals. We're talking about a drug that is supposed to mellow people out, and can be legally purchased in multiple states.

It's going to be hard to do some good when they're suspended...And it shows Schwartz has little control over this team.

Especially if Matthew Stafford goes down with an injury.

If that happens...they'll be in the running for the #1 overall pick.

Well no ****. You take the QB off any team and they aren't going to be the same.

Denver did pretty well after losing/cutting their starting QB last year.

Good teams don't fold when they lose one player, regardless of position.

Everyone who claims that smoking weed should not be considered a "red flag" better read this throwdown.

The Lions don't sniff the playoffs without Matt Stafford.

Titus Young should have stayed at Boise for punching Louis Delmas? Should the Panthers have sent Steve Smith back to Utah for punching Ken Lucas during practice?

"They got nothing in terms of production"

-- Titus Young was second on the team in touchdown receptions (6) and fourth on the team in receiving yards (607), so I wouldn't jump to that conclusion. Plus, Mikel LeShoure was injured, it isn't like he sucked. I am not saying breaking the law is bad, but to say some of these players did nothing for the team is absurd.
