I don't know if you guys saw this story but the Giants recently waived Jake Ballard to make room to sign another FA. The Giants didn't waive Ballard because they didn't want him; au contraire... they expected him to clear waivers and then they could put the injured tight end on the PUP/reserve list. Ballard's out for the year anyway due to a torn ACL and microfracture surgery on his knee, so the Gianst figured they could kill two birds with one stone by waiving Ballard.
Except the Patriots swooped in and snagged Ballard off the waiver wire.
Nice going, Jerry Reese. Way to give away your starting tight end; a guy who's been developing into a critical cog in the Giants offense.
(BTW... WTF is the deal with all the tight ends in NE? Gronk, Hernandez, Ballard... how many of these guys can they play at the same time? BB is pushing the envelope once again... what's next, a trade for Brees so the Pats can run simultaneous dual QBs?)
Anyway, the point is this - Reese made a major gamble putting a promising young stud like Ballard on the waiver wire and it backfired. He should've never gambled like that.
Reese should've known not to put Ballard on the waiver wire.

Calling Jake Ballard a major gamble is a stretch. Was a he a component to the Giants getting to the Super Bowl? Yes... but was he theee component? NO
Consider Ballard wasn't even the starting Giants tight end until last season when Kevin Boss left town (who btw was a bust for the Raiders).
More importantly the Ballard is not expected to play again until 2013 (you mentioned he was hurt but not for how long).
As for a critical cog... Eli is like a honey badger... he doesn't care who he throws too:
Amani Toomer
Plaxico Burress
Jeremy Shockey
Tiki Barber
Steve Smith
Mario Manningham
Kevin Boss
All big time WR targets that Eli has had and see go... yet last season he had a career high 4933 passing yards, and a 92.9 QB rating... his best QB rating was in 2009... 93.1).
Ballard was a good TE, but who's to say he'd even be the same when he returned from injury either?
It was a calculated risk, and not what the Giants had hoped for, but by no means was it a franchise killing or big of a deal. GMs botch 1st round picks all the time, and that has a way bigger impact than this. Trust in Reese

I don't think you read my argument, my man. I did say that Ballard was out for the year, and I never said Ballard is a major gamble. I said Reese took a major gamble by putting a promising young stuf like Ballard on the waiver wire, and I stand by that statement.
Anyhoo, hardly any of the guys you listed play for the Giants anymore... don't you think that losing all those weapons would make Ballard even that more of a valuable commodity?
Heck, this is the League where guys like a pair of fourth round draft picks is enough to snag an all-time great like Randy Moss. NOBODY wants to give away players for free, particularly when those guys are starters and major contributors, and even more particularly when we're talking about a tight end (the NFL's newest big-deal position) on a pass heavy team like the Giants that is a certain Super Bowl contender when Eli plays well.
Well, having a TE like Ballard certainly makes it easier for Eli to play well, which as I already explained is perhaps NY's biggest step towards another championship.
This IS a big deal. The draft is a gamble. giving away starters is avoidable, (Un)necessary, and stupid.
Reese screwed up big time.

Clearly you over value Ballard.
Last year he only played in 14 games for the G-men and in those games he put up these #s:
38 rec
604 yrds
4 TDs
Previous season Kevin Boss:
35 rec
531 yrds
5 TDs
Those #s are pretty comparable, which makes you wonder if it's not necessarily the player as much as the system. Which is why I listed all of the previous Giant players in my first argument.
All of those players have come and gone but the Giants still win, and put up the passing numbers. Seems a lot like a system with Eli running it well, and not necessarily the players... if it was the players on paper then more the reason to love Reese, and trust his track record:
Kevin Boss drafted 5th round
Jake Ballard undrafted
Ahmad Bradshaw 7th round
Victoc Cruz undrafted
Bear Pascoe 6th round
Reese has a proven track record of finding talent late or even after the draft. Did he panic last year when Steve Smith and Kevin Boss left? No... and Eli had as good if not better of a season than ever.
Reese knows something we don't and that is what he has on his roster that can become the next Jake Ballard.
So while you say it is a mistake... You don't know all the variables

Clearly you undervalue Ballard.
Tom Coughlin, the Giants head coach, was pissed about losing Ballard:
"Discourage is a minor description. Very disappointing", said Coughlin, when asked about losing his TE to the Patriots.
Coughlin knows enough about his teams' personnel to know that this was a completely avoidable loss, which brings me to my next point.
All those offensive players you listed earlier (Manningham, Toomer, Barber, etc) left because of understandable and unavoidable reasons. Leaving as a free agent is one thing; being too stupid to prevent your own players from being claimed by rival teams is just foolish. And avoidable.
There's that word again, avoidable. That's the key here. Ballard didn't leave as a FA because the Giants decided not to pay him a new contract. Ballard was ALREADY under contract and management was foolish enough to gamble with him on the waiver wire, and obviously it paid off.
Losing Ballard should NEVER have happened. All they had to do was NOT place him on the waiver wire, and with the expanded rosters this year there just isn't an excude for this debacle.
Reese gambled and shouldn't have. Shame on Reese.

LOL...I had two comments removed yesterday as well. There are still several zombie TDs and no clock but they worry about the language......LOL
And, I agree with you...I can't make an argument here.

Every team in the NFL have their bad picks. Just seems like some teams make a living at it.

They did it just to spite the Giants. So, smarter? Perhaps. More vindictive? Definitely.

Estelle Ghetto, I like the honey badger reference. Just thought I'd throw that out there.
I think the calculated risk failed to calculate the mad man in Foxborough. I can't say that I like him but I surely do respect his thinking. He's the Stephen Hawking of football coaches.

I thought it was HILARIOUS. It's common practice to do what the Giants did to open a roster spot, but it was a completely unnecessary risk at this point in the year when there are 90 roster spots. The Giants (and their fans) whining about Belichick breaking some "unwritten rule" by claiming him was great, but the reaction by Coughlin was priceless. He was PISSED, and he sounded like it was his own front office he was pissed at. When asked why they exposed him like that Coughlin said something to the effect of "You'll have to ask someone else because I have no answer for that"
Maybe New England will try to trade him back to NY for a Lombardi? Seems the only way they can get one from them. :)
(It's always fun to piss off Giants fans AND New England fans in the same post)

And yet they can't beat the Giants. Brady probably doesn't even remember the last Super Bowl he won. Seems to me a lot of their "smartness" was confiscated with the camera's after the last SB win. Not a single title since spygate means the asterisk still stands...

How about 'em? You don't see me calling the Cowboys the "smartest team in football".
63-16 with 0 trophies makes you happy? See, Dallas fans would consider that no better than 16-63 with 0 trophies. Ask Bills fans how great it is bragging about "appearances"...
