1. Womens sports? Womens sports had nothing to decline from. Anyway, if anything, they are rising.
2. Doubles Tennis? Or just tennis in general. Other that the top 2 guys in majors, who cares?
3. Ice hockey? Hockey is gaining in popularity
4. Cricket? Name 2 people who care about cricket. And in England it's the same as always
5. College Baseball? Never very popular, but it's steady and not declining
6. random olympic sports? Every Olympics people watch them, they aren't declining
7. Boxing? I agree.
8. MLS? Au contraire. Soccer is on the upswing in this country
9. Golf? As Tiger goes golf goes, if he's in contention people will care. Otherwise, they won't.
10. See #2

1. I dont mean to be sexist,
but
women are not good at sports..
2. While doubles and davis cup suck..
djoker and nadal have taken tennis to another level over the past 12 months..
while tennis is not big in your country, its huge elsewhere..
3. When i first came to the states, the hockey coverage was huge..
they had games on all the time, back in 98, on espn..
then the lockout came and hockey never recovered..
at the moment 2 soccer games are being shown on espn a day..
hockey can only dream of such coverage..
That new guy said 06/17, 06:00 PM
Yes, Womens sports suck. But, the title says sports that are on the decline. Womens sports were never popular, and are more popular now than they ever have been. How are they on the decline?
Tennis, nobody pays attention to it. It is not huge anymore, and it's not gonna grow. Tennis sucks and is on the decline.
Back in 98, sure, it was huge. But, right now it is improving from the lockout, not declining. It is growing inside the country, and while not as huge as it once was, it is not on the decline. They have a huge deal with NBC and will be getting more coverage.
HighwayCrossingFrog said 06/18, 09:59 AM
You are stretching for straws with hockey..
espn is where its at, not nbc..
they used to have 2 or 3 games a week on espn..
even i would watch a couple, cause it looked like a big deal..
whether you like it or not,
soccer killed hockey..
we are the new golden boy..
you are the fat chick at the bar, with bee stings on her crotch..
every empire has its time, and then one day falls into abomination..
hockey is a horror!
That new guy said 06/18, 11:43 AM
Decline: a failing or gradual loss, as in strength, character, power, or value; deterioration.
Hockey is not on the decline. I am not a huge fan of hockey, but it doesn't take a fan to realize hockey is not declining. Hockey is getting stronger, recovering from that lockout. It was 14 years ago they had 2-3 games a week on espn, now they have that many games but on NBC. They are improving and the number of hockey fans keeps going up.
Hockey is still more popular in the US than soccer, and every other sport not called basketball, football, or baseball. It is only growing and certainly not on the decline.

MLS isn't a sport, it's a brand of soccer. It's a league, NFL isn't a sport, it's a brand of the sport of football.

Golf is in decline? HAHAHAHAHAHA
Tiger shot a 1 under in the first round of the US Open this afternoon, putting him in second place, meaning he's a near lock to be in contention for the weekend...ratings will be HUGE. If he starts Sundays round within 5 strokes of the lead it will almost certainly be the highest rated Open EVER. Golf goes as Tiger goes and he's playing better than he has in a few years right now.

Ice Hockey is on the incline. NBC is putting a lot of money into sports and the NHL is their league.

Good point.
Out of all the sports mentioned, Boxing at one point was a legit top sport. Non of the other sports mentioned I think have ever been considered a major sport in America.

Because Boxing isn't "on the decline", it declined a Looong time ago and has actually had a bit of an uptick more recently.

Yes, but that was a couple of decades ago. Boxing isn't "declining" now, it pretty much hit rock bottom and is coming back, a bit. It's more popular than people realize. Top boxing cards far outsell top MMA cards on PPV, for example.

"Women's sports", if he's talking professional, were never popular to begin with so I'm not sure what they would be "declining" from. If anything, Tennis had a bit of an upswing recently with Sharapova going for the career grand slam (as if that means anything).
On the Amateur level, you're right. Particularly NCAA basketball has enjoyed increased popularity, though still in comparison to mens sports "popular" is a relative term.

Women's sports are thriving. All sport is not professional dip wad.
Tennis I agree with. The crowd at places like Wimbeldon or the US Open is there to ogle each other, not watch the game. Tennis courts all over America are empty. It is a rich person's sport around most of the world.
Boxing has long been out the mainstream. It has its fan base. Sports writers like it because it is an excuse to go to Vegas and get h**kers.
MLS is doing fine. Soccer is THE sport of the rest of the planet. Twenty million kids are playing soccer in the USA. Kids football leagues are shrinking.
If you think Cricket is dying you need to get out of the USA once in awhile. A billion Indians live and die on the latest cricket scores.
Golf has a small, dedicated core fan group. It will never grow. Everyone knows who Tiger Woods is - and the three million fans of golf will watch him. No one is calling their buddy and saying, "hey, let's head over to Hooters and catch the last round of the Open."
So - sports that are in decline - golf, tennis, long distance running, down hill skiing.
Sports that are stagnant - they have a dedicated following, but are not growing. The NBA, the NHL, MMA, NASCAR, MLB
Sports that are ascendant - all extreme sports. If it is in the X Games, winter or summer it is thriving. Soccer - the obsession of the planet. The US is slowly catching up, but let's face it - American football is a hundred times more telegenic. The NFL rules America.
