Was Jim Rome's question legit?

First off, I have mixed opinions about Jim Rome. He can be a jerk sometimes and at others he's absolutely classic.

With that being said, I loved how he challenged David Stern and asked if the draft was rigged. It was a great question and something a lot of sports fans and even franchise brass wanted to ask but couldn't

Stern responded like a moron and he really came out looking worse

In his position, it would be very difficult for anyone to really grill him about the situation and instead of responding like a professional, he took it personal.

The majority of the media can't openly address it because they don't want to be on the wrong side of the commissioner
And even if some could, they aren't in a position to challenge Stern directly

So was the fix in?
Right now, no one knows (except for Stern) so there's no real evidence out there

But is it a relevant question?
Let's see
A team the NBA owns
In a city they are trying to bring the NBA back to prominence
They had the 4th best chance
Now they'll draft a potential franchise changing star

I think it's a very legitimate question and I'm glad Jim Rome asked

Jim Rome is a sensationalist and to me his question was unprofessional. You called Stern unprofessional, and I will address his answer here in a second. But first, Jim Rome is NOT someone I would give accreditation for being a true sports analyst. He is the Jerry Springer of the sports world. David Stern should have been cautioned when agreeing to sitting down with this guy in the first place but since he did he subjected himself to the Rome effect that could happen.

And what did Jim Rome do? He used his show as a means again for poking the bear with a stick. He has done it before and he did it again when he asked if the Lottery was fixed so the NBA owned Hornets won the first pick.

But he asked it in a way that it was a no win answer if Stern answered the question directly. If he said yes the fix was on then that of course would carry all kinds of consequences but IF he had answered with a direct No, then the next thing coming was the "Well how do you explain..."

Stern's immediate reply for those that don't know was:"Uh, you know, I have two answers for that," Stern said. "I'll give you the easy one ??? no ??? and a statement: Shame on you for asking."

How is that bad?

Regardless of whether you like Jim Rome or not, he's one of the top sports radio personalities in the country and he has a very large listening audience

His job is to ask the tough questions and that's what he did.
That's why he gets the big ratings

And was it a legitimate question, definitely

Instead of taking the question and discussing the issue, Stern became combative and yes, Jm Rome put on the heat. That's classic radio

And Stern's response was "shame on you for asking"

The NBA is in the process of selling a team and that team just happens to win the lottery. It would have been shame on Jim Rome for not asking

And yes it did get bad because as Jim Rome kept pressing him (which he's supposed to do as an interviewer), Stern got personal and brought up a relationship issue

If anything, this is showing that Stern is slowly losing his cool

In my opinion, Stern receives way too much credit for the success of the NBA.

Quite honestly, much of the success can be attributed to Bird vs Magic, the Jordan era and Kobe/Shaq

Stern's response of Shame on you for asking was perfect given the fact that Rome is a putz.

You guys remember that Rome is the same guy that goaded Jim Everett into a rage on his show and then whimpered like a dog when Everett overturned the desk and started to kick his arse?

You guys remember that Rome is the same hypocrite that called Horse Racing a sham and not a true sport but now owns interest in six race horses himself?

You guys know that Rome has NEVER been anything but a radio talk show host and that he uses the sports venue to spread his Springer Povich Williams disease to those of you that pay him attention.

You give credit to Jim Rome like he is some kind of creditable mogul because he is syndicated and has a large audience. Well, Hitler had a captivated audience as well but that did not make him righteous or morally acceptable.

So again, the question was not a professional question to ask. Also, after he was told no, he should have dropped the subject and moved on to the next topic. In the aftermath, it was clear he was looking to pick a fight and hopefully goad Stern into a reaction.

So guys like yourself see him as a martyr. Not I.

You're comparing Jim Rome to Hitler?

Let's be serious. One guy has a listening audience and has an enjoyable radio show. The other person.....that's a comparison that should never be made in a sports related discussion.

The question was very legitimate and David Stern could have addressed it as a professional. You're right that he shouldn't have come on the show if he thought he wasn't going to be grilled.

I'll give props to Rome because I love listening to Dan Patrick and Colin Cowherd but I don't either of them would have asked Stern that question as direct.

It has nothing to do with being a martyr, he's a radio personality doing his job. Tough journalists don't just "drop" the question because the person says no, they keep digging

It also has nothing to do with anyone's opinion, it was a very good question that all basketball fans are interested in.

As I read in a recent article, David Stern is starting to lose his grip
First, the lockout,
Then the Chris Paul trade
Now the lottery "fix"

Honestly, I think we'll see more outbursts like this from Stern and I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't retire soon

JR to Hitler was not the comparison. Just making a point that someone having a large audience does not mean that they are morally righteous or heroic.

And let's be honest, you opened by saying that Jim Rome can be a jerk and then you turn the tables by treating him like an idol or hero for asking Stern if the fix was in. I cannot flip the switch that quickly on someone. IF I know they are a jerk, like Rome, his credibility is shot before he even opens his mouth. Then when he does I read the question as he intended it; not to seek the truth as you suggest, but to create controversy. Rome did not care about the truth, if he did he would have moved on once the Commissioner answered.

Now, be honest about something else, IF he had dropped the subject after he was told no then Stern would not of had to go on the offense. David Stern was a lawyer for 12 years prior to running the league for the past 30 years so he knows when someone is backing him into a corner. The fact that he went on the offense is a natural instinct from anyone, especially from someone trained in law.

Fact remains also, the question was not a tough question, it was an accusation. Stern saw it the same.

Yes, Stern is a putz.

QUOTE(#2):

Reading the transcript of the exchange, I honestly felt that Stern got the better of Rome. That said, I do feel that Rome's question seems a little more legit after watching the officiating in last night's game.

the fact that Stern got down to Rome's level is an indictment of Stern.

More to come in second argument but point is AFTER JR got his answer he kept pushing the issue.

Indeed, but I've never held him in high regard.

I am NOT a Stern fan, however, I am even less of a fan of Jim Rome.

To be honest, I don't think it's a legitimate question. When you look at the teams that could've won the lottery, someone could claim conspiracy on half of them.

Cleveland - Payback for losing LeBron
New Jersey/Brooklyn - Moving franchise, way for them to trade for Howard
New Orleans - League owns the team
Sacramento - Maloofs in trouble, need some way to revive franchise

If Rome wants to ask Stern about a fix, he should replay him the video from the 1985 draft lottery.

Agreed, he was given the privilege of sitting with the Man that is responsible for bringing life back to the NBA and challenging directly his and the entire NBA organization's integrity. All of the professional sports world should boycott anthing this guy has to do with.

All of those true but with the league owning the Hornets, I believe that gives greater credence to the matter. Also, asking about the 1985 fix (folded edge of the envelope) might have led to blows.

Given the "privilege"? He's the commissioner of the NBA not the governor. Jim Rome is a well known member of the media with a very large listening audience. His audience has the right to have that question asked.

Well known, but not Well respected. There is a difference.

I quit watching or listening to him when he cowarded on the floor when Jim Everett threatened to beat that arse.

I took the term legitimate as prudent or professional, if that is NOT what is meant by legitimate then I need clarification.

I took the term legitimate to mean was it a question worthy of an interview. Is it a question that the public really does have different opinions on.

Yeah, I'm not dealing with this as a popularity contest. Stern should never have gone on that show to begin with. but the question is a fair one, it is in the media, not just on that show.

Stern came off badly.
