My selection: Joe Louis

69-3 57 KO's
6'2 220 LBS

Champion 1937-1948

*Was Heavyweght Boxing Champion for 12 years.
*Defended title 25 times
*Beat 7 former Heavyweight Champions

My guess is that my challenger will select Ali, Holmes, Dempsey or Marciano.....

Argument 2: My reasons to select Joe Louis and rebuttal against right.....

Muhammad Ali.

-6 Kentucky Golden Gloves
-2 national title Golden Gloves titles
-Amateur Athletic Union National Title
-Light Heavyweight gold medal in the 1960 Olympics in Rome.

As a pro, he won 56 fights (37 by KO) and had just 5 losses.

-Ali beat every top Heavyweight during his era, which is commonly referred to as the Golden Age of boxing for the Heavyweight division.

-Ring Magazine is a very well respected boxing publication and they named him as the best Heavyweight boxer of all time in 1998.

-A year later in 1999 the Associated Press voted him the #1 Heavyweight of the 20th Century.

I will keep it shot since you did as well.

While Ali may have been the greatest, Louis was still the best of all time.

Joe Louis:

1). Held the title longer than any heavyweight champion ever.
2). Defended the title more than any other heavyweight.
3). Retired as the champion.
4). Lost only 3 fights. All losses were to men who held the title (Schmeling, Charles, and Marciano).
5). Enjoyed 24 and 34 fight winning streaks.
6). Held his title longer than any boxing champion in any weight class "East Side Boxing: IBRO's 25 Greatest Fighters of All Time". http://www.eastsideboxing.com/news.php?p=8921&more=1"
7). Had only 1 title defense from March 1942 to June 1946 because of WW II.
8). With the normal amount of fights he had, could have easily had 30 to 40 title defenses.

Ali was "The Greatest", but Louis was the best!

Argument 3: Final summation.....

Here are some of the fighters Ali beat:

Leon Spinks (avenged a loss)
Ken Norton (Twice and avenging a loss)
Joe Frazier (twice, also avenging a loss)
Sonny Liston (twice)
Floyd Patterson
George Foreman
Archie Moore

This why many so many consider him the best. He fought and beat a Who's Who of boxing in an era that featured some of the best Heavyweights ever.

-Ali had a 10, 14 and 31 fight winning streaks. Again, this is more impressive considering the era he fought in.

Ali was a brash and cocky fighter:

But, he was very funny and a great quote. Not to mention, he could back it up in the ring. He is 1 of the most recognizeable athletes of all time.

Some of your supporting data confirming Ali:

-6 Kentucky Golden Gloves
-2 national title Golden Gloves titles
-Amateur Athletic Union National Title
-Light Heavyweight gold medal in the 1960 Olympics in Rome

All well and good, but does not really show how Ali was the best heavyweight of all time.

Also having Leon Spinks on the list of best HW fighters of his era is a little bit of a stretch.

Here is why I selected Joe Louis.

1). Held the title longer than any other HW...including Ali.
2). Most title defenses....more than Ali.
3). Won 69 fights...more than Ali.
4). Had 57 KO's...more than Ali.
5). Had only 3 losses....less than Ali.
6). Only lost to heavyweight champions.

So while Ali was the best of his era, he was not the best of all time.

Nice TDing with you DJ. I am sure we will do it again in the future.

Best of luck.....

I made a mistake listing his Golden Gloves titles as a Heavyweight. It happens.

-Ali was the only HW boxer to win the title 3 times (1964-1967, 1974-1978, 1978-1979).

-Boxing Writer Association's 1974 Fighter of the Year

-Sports Illustrated 's 1974 Sportsman of the Year

"So while Ali was the best of his era, he was not the best of all time."

Louis was a great fighter. I am not insulting the man, but I think fighting in a much tougher era makes Ali the best of all time.

Ali revolutionized boxing for the way they fought. He used his speed and quickness combined with power to beat his opponents. Imo, he was the HW version of Sugar Ray Leonard with more power.

He was 1 of the brashest, cockiest and most electrifying personalities boxing has ever seen. He was many things, but boring was never one of them.

This is all part of why he was the best HW ever.

Anyone wanna to a TD on whether the Angels will win the AL West this year? I've got yes. DC me if you disagree.
