murraymania..
We are essentially talking about murray getting knighted on the spot..
not since 1937, has a brit won a grand slam..
while i admit, if murrays first slam were at aussie, french or US open..
it would not be as big of a deal..
if murray wins his first slam on home soil,
the celebration would be none we have or ever will see, in our lifetimes..
centre court would go nuts.. Henman hill, which fits another 10,000 would riot..
tennis is huge in england..
its absurd that a country like england has not produced a champ for 75years..
murray reeks of talent, its crazy he has not won one slam yet..
the fact that he has made so many semis and finals, has just pushed the country to the brink of insanity, even more so..
The red sox winning was a great story..
but we are talkin about blood here..
if murray wins his first on foreign soil,
then yes, it becomes a plain jane story...
but
if murray breaks the cherry at wimbie..
we will never see a country party soo hard..
me?
i just hope he gets to the finals..
every ppint he wins, the crowd will go bonkers!
That new guy said 07/06, 11:13 AM
First off, he won't win, but that's beside the point.
No way anybody in anything related to tennis will be the biggest story in sports of any time period
Bigger stories in past year alone:
Heat win NBA finals
Giants upset Patriots and win Super Bowl
Kings win Stanley Cup
Cardinals win World Series
Spain wins Euro 2012
NBA free agency stuff -Nash, Williams, Howard, etc
NHL free agency stuff -parise, etc
Baseball regular season -Orioles, pirates, Yankees, Red sox, Etc
Daytona 500
Fenway Park 100th anniversary
Chelsea winning Champions League
Real Madrid beating Barcelona in La Liga
Man City taking the EPL
The new Thunder-Heat presumed rivalry
Other bigger stories:
Cubs not winning for 100 years
Red Sox first World Series in 2004
Spain winning their first world cup in 2010
Many more
Tennis will never be #1 in anything. Maybe in England it will be for 1 or 2 days, but nobody really cares.

Just to clear things up,(argos)..
if murray wins, he will be the first brit in 76years..
the fact that england is going bonkers over a scot,
shows how desperate england is for a winner..
heck, we even rooted for a certain canadien:)
All you mentioned were club sports..
no one outside of NY cared about tje giants..
international competition is where its at..
That new guy said 07/06, 04:08 PM
The population of the UK is 62 million. Out of that maybe 40 million (being generous) care. not exactly a huge amount of people.
Nobody outside of England cares about Murray, hell, half of England doesn't care either. More people would care if Lebron got caught picking his nose than about tennis.
Club sports are in general more popular than international
NBA>International Basketball
NHL>International Hockey
MLB>International Baseball
The fact is, nobody gives a **** about tennis. Yeah, it would be a big story for tennis fans, but there are far more baseball, basketball, football, hockey, etc fans than there are Tennis.
Tennis will never be the biggest story, no matter what happens.

Dude..
if murray wins..
he will be KNIGHTED on the spot..
you dont know what you are talking about..

Too bad they still won't have one. Murray is Scottish...

Speaking of Scotland...
HCF, think that the referendum for Scotland to become fully independent will pass?
I don't know if it will or not, but if they do, it is pretty stupid. If they did it 40 years ago it might make sense, since they had all that oil in the North Sea, and the Brits in England were the ones benefiting the most. But now, all that oil has pretty much dried up from my understanding, and Scotland is like Quebec in Canada now, it gets more money from the rest of the UK than it gives. They have too much economic dependence on England and would go broke if England stopped pouring money into Scotland.

Pretty sure he is also openly against England, or at least hates their soccer team...

If Murray wins Wimbleton, it will be the least important sports story in America.

If you're going by the size of the celebration, if Dale Earnhardt Jr wins at Daytona this weekend, you're gonna have 200,000 drunk people, a good portion of them rednecks who know how to party going completely crazy. Same if Jeff Gordon wins, but instead of a celebration, it will be more of a pissed off mob.

I could not disagree more. Nobody outside the UK cares about Murray. Most of the world doesn't give a hoot about tennis at all...

Scots are patriotic to the point of stupidity - shown by the desire of a number of them to try for independence. If they became independent their losses of tax subsidies from England would cripple a country which already faces a significant unemployment problem. There would be mass economic migration to England, spiralling Scotland into (further) gloom. Their industries cannot compete on a global scale - be it oil, gas or wood, and the world just doesn't drink that much whisky.
Scotland gets a bit of tourism, but the miserable Scots usually do their best to drive them away too...

Right forgot in his list:
The Orioles and Pirates both being above .500 and threatening to break their consecutive losing season streaks.
The Pirates being in FIRST by 2 GAMES as we close in on the All-Star break and 10 games over .500.
