Michael Crabtree deserves to be a Heisman Candidate, even though he's a Freshman

In fact, that makes it even more special.

In 7 games he has 78 Catches for 1244 Yards (15.9 YPC) and 17 TDs.

This guy is just absolutely redicuous. Yes he plays for TT, but still, to step in as the #1 WR as a Frosh, and even then, to totally kill everyone?

He's set every receiving record for a freshman already, and now the single season records look like they could be in sight.

He's the greatest player you don't know about.

Define Candidate-

if you mean a finalist going to New York then no- even with all the upsets you still have power players from power teams that will take it

no freshmen or sophomores have ever won the award, and only a few juniors have held the bronze trophy; the rest have been seniors. While no freshmen or sophomores have ever won the Heisman, several have come close. Angelo Bertelli, Glenn Davis, Doc Blanchard, Doak Walker, and Herschel Walker all finished in the top three of the Heisman voting as underclassmen before eventually winning the award. Clint Castleberry, Marshall Faulk, Michael Vick, Rex Grossman, Larry Fitzgerald, and Adrian Peterson also received top-three placement as underclassmen, but never won the Heisman. In 2006, Darren McFadden came in second to Troy Smith as a sophomore, and in 2007 he will be the only active college player with top-three Heisman placement as an underclassmen

Plus he does not play RB or QB in the LOOOOONG history of the Heisman only TWICE has a WR won it and only three times has a non- RB/FB/QB not won it. - and one of those was a protest vote IMNHO

Look at this years "candidates" that were named at the beginning of the year.

Booty: 113/175 (64.6%), 1239 Yards, 12 TDs, 8 INTs - He's been benched in favour of Mark Sanchez

McFadden: 147 Carries, 822 Yards (5.6 YPC), 7 TDs, 8 Catches, 61 Yards (7.6 YPC), 0 TDs - He's not even close to the season he had last year, plus Auburn shut him down, and mind you, Arkansas is 3-3, and 0-3 in the SEC

Slaton: 112 Carries, 625 Yards (5.6 YPC), 9 TDs, 12 Catches, 179 Yards (14.9 YPC), 1 TD - He's on pace to finish 500 Ryards below last year's, and his YPC is 1.4 YPC below last years as well. He's been shut down by numerous teams (USF held him to exactly 4.2 YPC and SYRACUSE held him to 4.6)

White: 73/102 (71.6%), 865 Yards, 7 TDs, 1 INT, 69 Carries, 411 Yards (5.9 YPC), 7 TDs - He's on pace for more passing yards and TDs than last year, but not rushing yards nor rushing TDs. He was shut down by USF (<10 ypcompletion>

It doesn't matter what "candidate" means. He deserves to be in the Top 5 for that award. He's done better than those 4 players I listed.

He deserves to be in New York.

preseason picks means NOTHING-

They change constantly- and in 2 weeks there will be another hot prospect that may get to NY- Look at Tebow- a definate Heisman candidate- but 2 losses have knocked him down- If he wins a few more games he will be right back up there

It's the way these races go- If USC rolls over Cal and Notre Dame- Booty will be right back in the discussion.

Freshmen can be brilliant- but most flame out sooner or later- the special players the ones that have a body of work to look at- they can take the Heisman.

Also - you have to look at the system- unless you are a QB/RB at Nebraska or a QB in the state of Florida You normally have to preform better than anyone else for an established lenth to get the Heisman- and also have to do something spectacular in a big game- hopefully Notre Dame on NBC

Also look who they have played so far

SMU
Utep
Rice
Oklahoma State
Northwearn State
Iowa State
Texas A&M

Not impressive at ALL

Wait until THey get to Texas and Oklahoma and then get back to me.

You beat A&M - the same team that got blown out by 4-3 Miami- who just lost to UNC!!

You DO know that even though he plays in a pass-first offense he still has to:

1) Get open by himself
2) Actually get to where the ball is
3) Actually CATCH the ball
4) Hang onto it
5) Run afterwards if possible

He has a TD every 4.6 catches. That's tops in Div 1-A.

Besides, you're treating him like a QB.

Who you beat only matters for QBs. For all you know, those teams you listed could be the top pass defenses in the nation. Just because they sound like "crappy" schools doesn't mean they suck in every aspect of the game.

And upsets happen. If A&M played UNC they'd probably win.

You DO know that in the HISTORY of the Heisman only three times has a non-backfeild player not won it?

No Freshmen has EVER won it?

That is a TON of history there and who he playes STILL matters- If he is playing a tiny school they may not even have a CB that goes 6'0 that can crack a sub 5 speed- while Texas may have 4 or 5 on the feild.

He may be the best Freshman out there- maybe even a top Wideout- but Hawaii has set DOZENS of passing records since June Jones hit the islands- and have any of those system QB's gotten to New York?

Also he is a Freshmen- he will be coming back next year- you know it, I know it, Mike WIlliams knows it and the VOTERS know it- so if he is really great and not a one-year flash Then he can have the thing NEXT YEAR.

October 15, 2007  09:31 AM ET

he deserves to go to new york.

October 15, 2007  12:16 PM ET

Who else this season has had stellar numbers compared to his and has been that important a player on his team?

October 15, 2007  01:26 PM ET

It doesn't matter about history NC.

I don't care that very few WRs have won it, nor have no freshman or sophomores

I'm not saying he's GOING to win it, or that he SHOULD, I'm saying that he SHOULD be considered a candidate, and be invited to New York, because quite frankly, the only player more dominant than him right now is his QB Graham Harrell.

Your argument does not refute my point.

October 15, 2007  02:13 PM ET

what about mike hart leading the ncaa d-1a in rushing? forgot about him?

October 15, 2007  02:14 PM ET

top 5 tebo, hart, woodson, brohm, mcfadden and no crabtree is not better then any of them

October 15, 2007  02:16 PM ET

Lo603 you nkow nothing about Heisman voting.

Crabtree has been the second most dominant player in Div 1-A behind Harrell.

It doesn't matter how good you are - it's the stats and who you play

October 15, 2007  02:24 PM ET

he has mor ctaches in a game then great receivers on non pass crazy offenses get thrown at in a game. his numbers are skewed and voters will see that also.

and i forgot youre so smart and know everything about everything and yet you still lost to me you sore loser

hahaha

October 15, 2007  02:28 PM ET

You can't argue, so whatever.

It doesn't matter if his numbers are scewed either. Stats are stats, you can't do anything about it.

Besides, even in that system as a freshman, do you expect him to be on pace for almost 2200 yards and 30 TDs?

Hell no, so shut your mouth.

October 15, 2007  02:33 PM ET

no they are stats are stats if you dont have a pass happy offense that throws the ball 70 times a game, so hes so much better than mario manningham or desaun jackson cuz his stats are better even thow cal and mich only throw the ball at most 30-5 times a game (half as much) yeah good call on the stats are stats argument...hahha you lost and youre being a little**** about it

October 15, 2007  02:33 PM ET

yes in his system he should get 2000 yards receiving and 30 tds he gets thrown at like 20 times a game are you kiding me

October 15, 2007  02:36 PM ET

is he better than tebow no
is he better than hart no
is he better than mcfadden no
is he better than jackson no
is he better than woodson no
is he better than brohm no

he is a systems receiver whom gets his stats due to being a part of that system, mike hart gets his yards without a system (well i guess if running him up the gut and him breaking 10+takles a game is a system ill agree) jackson doesnt benefit from a system tebow doesnt benefit from a system nor does woodson but nice try

October 15, 2007  02:46 PM ET

HE'S A FRESHMAN!

You are an idiot!

This guy is playing like a bloody senior!

And good try. Harrell only has 49.6 attempts per game - much less than this "70" you speak of.

It took Crabtree less than 6 games to break the record for most TD receptions by a freshman.

He's also on pace to destroy the record for receptions by a freshman. He's on pace for 134, the record is 98 - set by another TT player.

The record for receiving yards in a season is 2060 - Crabtree is on pace for 2133.

The record for a fresman is 1265 by BMW. Crabtree is at 1244.

The record for TD receptions is 27. Crabtree is on pace for 29.

How can you say this kid ISN'T a Heisman candidate? It's absolutely rediculous to think that he isn't.

It's not just the numbers. He's a freshman, it's not very often you find one at WR this good.

October 15, 2007  02:48 PM ET

And I told you, but you refuse to listen.

It isn't about how good YOU are. It's about the numbers you put up, the teams you play, and if you're a QB, the games you win.

Tebow has lost 2 games. Brohm has lost a game.

October 15, 2007  02:49 PM ET

And LOL DeSean Jackson fricken sucks this year, you don't even know what you're talking about

October 15, 2007  02:50 PM ET

it doesnt matter yes hes a feshman that alone keeps him out of new yark

so youre an idiot

when was the last time a freshman was invited to new york for the ceremony

i dont care about the stats you are so dumb it kills me, dont you get it when you get the ball thwon at you 20 times a game you tend to amass a lot of stats and he just catches it i hate harrel but ill give him more credit for putting the ball on a freshmans hands.

why do rbs win most cuz they do things on their own they are not responsible for having a good qb throwing at him or throwing to a good wr they do it on there own the o line blocks but they still pick holes and break the tackles.

hes a systems wr and freshmen get that through your tiny mind he will not be in new york guarantee that

October 15, 2007  02:51 PM ET

no i listened to what you said and you said its about stats i believe it was "stats are stats" so if we go on stats there are plenty if you go by averages per attempt or catch or thown at that are better

October 15, 2007  02:54 PM ET

jackson gets doule and triple covered hard to double cover crabtre when you have a gimmik offense thats throws out 5 wrs every play

October 15, 2007  02:55 PM ET

who cares that hes beating all the freshman records until he shatters all the all time season records it doesnt matter cuz hes a freshman and you speak of freshman as not being good so how is it a big deal if hreaks all the freshman records?

October 15, 2007  02:56 PM ET

hahaha and yure goin to lose this one two he has more votes with one argument than you have in your two ****.ty ones

October 15, 2007  03:00 PM ET

Crabtree doesn't get thrown at 20 times a game.

He has 78 receptions in 7 games. If he was thrown at ~20 times a game that'd mean he was thrown ~140 balls. I doubt there's been 62 incomplete passes to him.

So since Harrell's attempted 49 passes a game. . .and 20 are to Carbtree. . .that leaves 29 for the other WRs. And at a 74.4% completion rate, that's only 21.6 passes for the other WRs. . .which is sad, because the other receivers are averaging 29.3 receptions per game total.

Oops, looks like you're the idiot.
