How many ways can we award a medal for someone swimming 200 Meters?
Diving? This is judged. It is no measure of Athletic ability.
Gymnastics? Yea, lets cheer that we have the best steroid, abused, puberty delaying drugged young women in the world. Oh yea and lets have a 3rd party judge it.
The Olympics should be non objective Athletic events that measure some sort of relevant ability.
The Track and field is great.

I am not a huge fan of the Olympics and agree to an extent that some sports are absolutely stupid but I take exception to the sports you mentioned.
Diving and Gymnastics.
Both require athletic ability. Maybe that athletic ability cannot be measured on a scoreboard like basketball or track, but the scoring system is pretty well established.
There are bound to be controversies but that is part of the game. Even sports with objective score keeping have a level of subjectiveness. Fouls and other referee calls in basketball and soccer are subjective. Same goes with field hockey and basically any sport in which the referee/umpire has a whistle.
There is a difference between the different swimming strokes. It requires different muscles. In track, you have hurdles and the sprint. similar concepts but different techniques. But I will concede, there is too many medals for swimming
Sports which I think should be eliminated:
Equesterian (6 medals and you are riding a horse)
Sports which should have fewer events
Sailing & Fencing (10 **** medals each)
Shooting (15 medals)
Canoeing (16 medals)
Aquatics (46 medals)
