People need to stop treating the USF win over Auburn on the road in Week 2 of the season as an elite win.
Just A Fan said 10/15, 08:13 PM
Almost every team in the top 25 would have annihilated Auburn in the first three weeks of the season. Everyone was talking about how horrible Auburn was on offense and ready to forget about them. Well Auburn finally found an offense when they played New Mexico St. and have seemed like they can actually play a little on both sides of the ball. USF barely beat Auburn when they didn???t have their best running back and the young o-line and receivers had not clicked. USF deserves to be #1 in the nation because they are undefeated and have played a good WV team and the rest of the schedule has been average. People need to stop treating the win over Auburn like Auburn???s play the last 4 weeks has been their play the whole season. Do people not remember they were very horrible in the K-State win (should have lost, didn???t take lead until 2 minutes left) and they lost to Miss St. The reason we have human polls and human perspective is so we realize Auburn in week 4-7 has been ten times better than Auburn week 1-3. Give credit to USF for beating a traditionally good team on the road, but don???t treat it like that game was on the same level of play as the Auburn-UF, UF-LSU, or UK-LSU game

I notice you mentioned it didn't compare to a series of SEC games. People can be so hypocritical when it comes to SEC competition. If an SEC team beats Auburn then it is considered a monumental win but when a Big East team does the same, it is considered a fluke win.
Their offense didn't exactly come alive against Florida and they did not have Brad Lester until this past week. The defense has been their imprint. Auburn may have stayed close in the contest but they have been were completely outclassed in that game considering South Florida missed 3 FG's in that game. It may not have had marquee billing but in retrospect it was an elite win.
Auburn may have improved since then but it's ignorant to assume that South Florida and their sophomore quarterback have not improved as well. Does Oregon's win over Michigan not count as elite as well? I think not.
Just A Fan said 10/15, 09:50 PM
I also don???t think it compared to the USF-WV or Cal-Oregon game. Auburn averaged giving up 4 turnovers and three sacks in its first three games. All three of their first three games were at home, and they lost to Miss St. the third week of the season. Brandon Cox (Sr.) was playing so bad in week three they put a freshman in. They had to go to a freshman running back earlier in the year who fumbled three times in the first three games because Lester wasn???t there to share the role with Tate(So.). The fact is Auburn was overrated to begin the season because of the inexperienced offense. The offense has improved drastically over the last 4 weeks turning the ball over only 5 times and giving up 4 sacks including zero to UF.I think USF is a very good team, but do not think Auburn was playing good football at the beginning of the season.
Lester played in the Vanderbilt game and had two touch downs and 77 yards.
Michigan had a problem with a scheme on defense and the Oregon win was a beat down (39-7). Most people thought it was impressive shutting down Michigan???s offense; however, I am skeptical of the whole big ten.
D.J. Dunson said 10/15, 10:31 PM
Your argument has some serious holes.
How was Auburn overrated when the season began but NOW they are a great SEC team? It doesn't matter if Auburn isn't their usual national championship contenders the point is that South Florida beat a powerhouse SEC team that on any given day could beat any team in the nation.
Instead of assuming Auburn's mediocre offensive output in that game was the result of Auburn's offensive woes instead of USF's disruptive defense means you've grossly underestimated their defense.
George Selvie was the same force in the Auburn game as he has been all season.

I would agree with you if it didn't seem like a three game stretch of bad football on the offensive side of the ball. Miss St did the same thing if not worse than what USF did. I am not saying that USF is not a good team because I personally think they deserve to be number 1; however, Auburn was not playing like a top 25 team when they beat them. It does matter that Auburn wasn't their national title contender self at that point in the season because people are calling it an enormous win. You could make the case that they beat an elite program, but this year???s Auburn team wasn???t playing good offensive football and as an elite team at the time. It is ridiculous for someone to say Auburn was playing top 25 football when through the first three games they were giving up on average four turnovers and three sacks. Of course you can also try to say that it was just USF???s defense, but they didn???t really do anything on defense the other two teams Auburn played in the first three weeks didn???t do. The point of this TD was not to say that USF is not a good team, but that their resume should not be credited with all the improvement of the Auburn team throughout the season. (chk Comments)

The point is this, Auburn has the same elite talent all season which they've displayed this season. If Auburn wasn't plating up to their potential then that rests on Tommy Tuberville and the Tigers. Everyone improves during the course of the season. Instead of discounting USF's win as a fluke appreciate it for what it is, an elite win for an emerging Big East contender vs. a perennial Big East powerhouse in hostile territory.

Neither Florida (in their loss) nor USF should treat their respective games against Auburn as an elite game. Auburn started the year 1-2 and not in the top 25 and if not for a 2minute miracle of scoring 14 pts in a crazy finish would have been 0-3 including losing to the doormat of the SEC Mississippi State. A team can improve and good for them but at the time the games were played Auburn was a mediocre to poor team

I think, in case you missed it, people are more or less celebrating a team like USF becoming a known football team, and possibly a powerhouse. It wasn't long ago that USF didn't even have a football program. Look at them now -- that's what people are talking about. Auburn just happens to be one of their biggest wins.

There is improvement by a team and then there is improvement like cutting out tons of turnovers and sacks. This is why we have human perspective because a computer doesn???t see the difference of a win early in the season compared to later.

USF beat Auburn
OSU beat Purdue
BC beat GT
Cal beat Oregon
LSU beat a 1 loss FLA team
Appears to be a big win when compared to the above.

Purdue is garbage and GT is too inconsistent
Oregon and UF have played well the whole year. I would contend that the Purdue (what good teams has Purdue contended with) and GT wins are not elite wins also. The fact of the matter is people are acting like Auburn was playing the same level of football for seven straight weeks when it is obvious they had an enormous amount of improvement. Teams are expected to improve, but how can people be ready to write Auburn off at the beginning of the season because they couldn???t play offense and then all the sudden they forget how horrible they played when they became a little more consistent and stopped giving up so many sacks and turnovers. Yes USF gets credit for the win because they went in and beat an elite program on the road, but you can???t say it is an ok(in the sense of beating an average team) win at the time after Auburn goes and loses again to Miss St extending a three week stretch of bad football. Everyone then makes it an elite win when Auburn finally shows some life with a young offense over the last 4 weeks. If people are going to make the case that USF is a powerhouse this year you can???t make elite wins in terms of your seasonal resume wins over average teams with elite names.

Anytime an unranked team comes into a ranked team's stadium (especially in the SEC) and wins rather handily is an elite win.

Fine then call it whatever you want. But out of the undefeated teams, USF wins over WVU and AU look a heck of lot better than....
1. BC over....GT, Wake, or NC State
2. KU over....C Mich, SE La, Toledo, FIU, KSU, and Baylor
3. OSU over.... Youngstown, Aron, WU, NW, Minn, Purdue
4. ASU over... SJSU, CU, SDSU, OR State, Stanford, WSU, and Wash
5. Hawaii and their bottom feeder schedule
So out of all teams the undefeated teams have beaten, name ONE team that you would put against Auburn and be certain of a Tiger loss. GT? Hardly a lock.
Don't call it elite if you want to but I think its fair to say that out of the undefeated teams, USF has the two biggest wins.

Just a Fan,
Will you be singing the same tune if Auburn beats LSU this week? Would have figured that a SEC fan would know better than to dismiss a SEC opponent on game week....

While Auburn was (is) totally overrated... and the SEC is totally overrated... Dunson gets this one. Any fan of any SEC team would tout a win over Auburn as the greatest accomplishment since the Cairo Pyramids.
