Was Machida the right choice for the next title shot?

Naturally, Shogun gassed, and Lyoto was actually winning the fight with Jones before he gassed. Machida gave a highlight reel KO. But Let me give you an idea, Jones isn???t a 6-700K PPV draw, and Machida isn???t even that good.
How about we do Jones/Machida II on FOX?

Yeah, forget about the ratings.

Give Bones Jones a NEW opponent.

I like Alexander Gustafsson.

He's on a five fight winning streak, 14-1 in all.

He's beaten Matt Hamill, Vladimir Matyushenko, and he's beaten Thiago Silva, two fighters Bones has beat as well. Well, Bones didn't beat Matt Hamill, but you know what I mean, he would've won against Hamill if it wasn't for those supposed "illegal elbows"....

Gustafsson is 6-5, and has a boxing pedigree.

Dana should've taken a chance on the "new blood", Gustafsson's GOOD

If you dont know this kid yet, then you're not a real mma fan.

This is from the Roundtable over on 7poundbag.com by the way.

So this gets you a title shot in your mind

W-Thiago Silva
W-Vladimir Matyushenko
W-Matt Hamill
W-James Te-Huna
W-Cyrille Diabate

Really? That trumps beating Bader and Randy around the Jones loss?

Heck Rashad Evans deserves a shot more that Guffy.
W-Phil Davis
W-Tito Ortiz
W-Quinton Jackson
W-Thiago Silva

Let's also keep in mind that Jpn Jones got His title shot by beating- BADER

So there is precedent to giving Lyoto the shot. Plus he is a former Champion.

Finally, Lyoto actually was WINNING the fight vs Jones. True, he did lose, but the list of guys to actually be in control in a jones fight is about as long as Dana's hair.

Guffy getting the Title shot is like giving the winner of the WAC a BCS title shot when they already lost to the best team on their sched. At least Lyoto won the SEC.

It's funny I wrote this last night, then TODAY, Dana puts "Guffy" as you call him, against Shogun for the #1 contender spot for the light heavyweight title.

Guffy matches up well with Bones, and he also HASN'T FACED HIM.

Both fighters are YOUNG, and have appeal on that note.

NC, you are saying these fights arn't credible wins???
W-Thiago Silva
W-Vladimir Matyushenko
W-Matt Hamill

Give me a break..

No offense to Machida, he's up there, but "Guffy", he's on a roll.

5 fight win streak..

What streak is Machida on?

Machida's lost to Rampage, Rashad, and Shogun.

"Guffy's" only loss is to Phil Davis, and after that, he went on a five fight winning streak, something I don't think Machida can do again.

Guffy needs U.S. fans, Dana would be smart to put him up against Bones.

Either way, Guffy has shogun next, and will see what happens.

Guffy has good size for Bones, and all Dana woulda had to do for ratings, add a big time co-mainevent. Gurantee Guffy would catch some eyes.

Yup. I'm saying it.
THESE WINS DO NOT GRANT YOU A TITLE SHOT

Thiago Silva's Last win was against KEITH JARDINE

KEITH JARDINE for crying out loud- and that was IN 2009!

UFC 102! Jon Jones had just beaten Jake O'Brien to go to 9-0!

You think that gets you a title shot?

Yes he's young- he has plenty of time to actually EARN a title shot, and Dana White agrees. Guffy (If you goto http://rankingmma.com/ufc-rankings/lhw-205/) is RANKED SEVENTH.

Phil Davis has beaten a better competitor, as has Rashad, Shogun and yes Machida.

He got the title fight, and was the most deserving.

Machida just BEAT BAder...

Bader lost to frkn TITO

Also, Machida's win over Couture, came one fight removed from the "toney scandel"....

lets be real...

Just like dana's pushing Weidman, he should also push Guffy.

New blood is good for the sport. Machida, if anybody,, should have to win ONE more.

Lets take a fresh one, Dana! Rematches arn't always the way to go.

Guffy has a win over Hamill, and Bones, well, he just doesnt.

Machida was the perfect choice to fight him.

I'm a machida fan. The "Karate Kid" is sick. I just don't know if a Bader victory deserved a #1 spot. Didn't Bader get beat by Tito? lmao

On a side, and random note, I can't wait for Brandon Vera's next fight! What heart he showed on Fox against Shogun.

Also, someone's going "nighty nite" in the Travis Browne vs "Big Foot" showdown.

It's a funny business, Machida went from being almost unbeatable, to losing 3 of his last 5 fights.

first loss was due to pressure to change his style to be more exciting....Rua didn't get better suddenly, Machida just stopped fighting smart and tried to stand and bang...it didn't work...second loss was a bad decision that wasn't supported by any known measure aside from the judges scorecards as ALL fightmetric and compustrike stats had Machida landing FAR more significant strikes and he clearly won the most dominant round....and his third was a title fight against Jones who has embarassed EVERY top LHW...so let's not get carried away by citing records over what ACTUALLY happened in the cage. And Machida remains the most likely to have a skill set that could topple Jones, even if it isn't all that likely.

Doesn't sound like anyone is giving Hendo any chance at 151.

I don't think Hendo will win, but his skill set could give Jones some problems.

his skill set? his one realistic chance is to get lucky and land a H-bomb against a guy that has such a massive reach advantage....he isn't going to outwrestle Jones, he isn't going to outstrike him to a decision...Hendo's skill set is to be able to take damage while trying to land the big shot like he did against Bisping and Fedor...

One of Jones' biggest strengths is the clinch against the cage. Hendo can do a ton of damage from that position. Plus when they break from the clinch, the H Bomb will be coming every time.

The betting public has Hendo going off as one of the biggest underdogs in UFC history.

-700 to -750 for Bones right now. You see those types of lines in boxing all the time but it's very rare in MMA.

UFC on Fox 5 announced today:

Main Event: Bendo vs. Nate Diaz (LW title)
Co-Main Event: Rua vs. Gustaffson (winner earns shot at LHW title)
Also: BJ Penn vs. Rory MacDonald (rebooked from Toronto card due to Rory's injury)

That's better than UFC149 or 150.

That would put Hendo in the +600 to +650 range?

Hard not to throw a $100 bill on Hendo.
