Duh.
He said:
???We can???t demote Notre Dame from its conference ??? since it is far too noble to belong to any piddling conference ??? but we can demote it in stature.
From now on:
- Notre Dame no longer gets its own television deal with NBC.
- Notre Dame no longer gets to be the only school in the country with an inexplicable seat at the BCS decisions-making table.
- Notre Dame no longer gets its yearly undeserved hellahype in preseason rankings and preseason All-America teams.
In short, until Notre Dame football starts winning again, it???s Rice to me.???
I say:
Rice? Really?
OK, let???s make a Point here.
ESPN gave Both Texas and USC their own TV deal- how was Texas last year? How come NBC can???t buy a team, but HIS network can? Sounds a bit hypocritical to me.
Finally, the run that ND football gets is due to the guys in the cubical next to you, not the fault of ND. If you don???t want College Gameday going there, tell your boss to tell their boss.
You can???t tell NBC or ESPN how to do their business. I live in SEC country, and there is VERY little on ND here, if any. It???s on ESPN, so its YOUR fault, not ND???s.

Rick Reilly doesn't speak for ESPN; he speaks on ESPN. When he wrote the things he did about Notre Dame, he was merely voicing his opinion, which, coincidentally, is his job. The fact that his opinion got you stirred up enough to create this TD means he did his job particularly well this week.
Moreover, I think you missed the point of his article. It isn't just about the NBC deal. It's this whole mystique that somehow Notre Dame Football is still relevant and deserving of special treatment. It's about the fact that Notre Dame has special rules and rights carved out for itself in the BCS - rights no other independents or non-BCS schools enjoy.
It's about the media (which admittedly he is a part of) figuratively wetting themselves each year they start the season with a win and seeking to announce that season the season Notre Dame regains its old football glory. However, for the last 20 years or so, that glory has eluded them and college football has passed them by. The media just doesn't want to admit it.
Reilly isn't a hypocrite. He's just a guy willing to say the emperor has no clothes - and Notre Dame football no longer deserves special treatment.

But that's beside the point- before I go all Whitlock and ask what the E stands for, and how it comes before the S.
Notre Dame, in your veiw, may not deserve all the press and ink (or whatever it is on the internet- pixels?) It gets, but as I said- how is that ND's fault?
If I came up to you and said that I would pay you to TD, and everytime you did I would put an ad out on the front page of my website-
Would you?
Would you say, no, Yoda is better than me, or Bigalke has been doing it longer and better?
No, you wouldn't.
So to slam ND for taking the same currency that Texas and USC have is a joke.
Obviously its a good deal for NBC, as they keep renewing the deal, so obviously SOMEONE cares for ND.
As for relevance, ESPNTexas has ONE title since 1970 and one trophy, so Texas, who is also ireelevant this year- is in a fairly major drought for 40 years by RR's reasoning.

Let's start with the really important part of your second argument: If anyone wants to pay me to TD, I accept cash, credit, Paypal, and post-dated third party checks...
Second, I think you are misreading Reilly's article. He isn't blaming Notre Dame. He's blaming those who enable them and saying he isn't going to be a part of it any longer. He's saying it's time for Notre Dame to stop getting special perks like getting paid a bowl bonus even if they don't play in a bowl. Who else gets that? What has Notre Dame done lately to deserve that?
He's saying it's time for Notre Dame and its followers to stop living in the past and be honest about what the team is today. It's not a bad story. They are no longer a football powerhouse because they have tougher admissions requirements than a lot of other schools. They should embrace that. They may not be in the same league as some of the teams in the SEC when it comes to football, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.
It isn't hypocritical to try to give some tough love to someone you care about. Reilly started his article by saying he grew up a Notre Dame fan. He just wants people to be honest about what they are today.

Your entire 2nd arg is irrelevant, much like ND football.
I am talking of taking NBC to task and the Irish as well, for taking advantage of a system for mutual benifit
I looked, at NO time did he come out against Texas and ESPN's deal, or the USC deal- one that came on the tail end of a scandal that took away a Heisman and a title, the two mesures of success according to his statements
I address his full text on 7poundbag.com (just now posted my first podcast and Colts season preview)
Ad break over, thank you
Texas using RR's criteria, is JUST as irrelevant in today's game, and if you include BB even less so, since ESPNTexas is funding that as well.
Texas has 1 title and 1 Trophy since the Carter days. Why is it perfectly ok for ESPN to give them a recruiting advantage (because that's what it is) yet foul for ND to do the same with a non-disney entity?
Why is it ok for USC? BYU went independent for the SOLE reason of doing what ND, USC and Texas did.
ND gets it's 1.3 million to keep them from breaking out of the bowl system and auctioning off it's Bowl invite. ND busting out a 11 win sched isn't impossible. That keeps them from cracking a corrupt system.

With all due respect, Dave, you completely missed the point of Reilly's article. He didn't talk about the Texas or USC deals because he wasn't talking about Texas or USC. He wasn't talking about TV contracts (although trying to compare the exposure Texas will get on the Longhorn network to the exposure ND gets on broadcast NBC is, frankly, a little silly). He was talking about Notre Dame.
He's saying he doesn't want Notre Dame to turn into the Blanche Dubois of college football: a faded beauty trying to live off her past and descending into madness as details of her more recent history come to light. Notre Dame has a rich football history. They are a storied program. However, their recent history endangers the brand.
He wants Notre Dame to take action to protect its legacy. He didn't deny their marketing appeal. He questioned their ability and willingness to put a good football team on the field. He questioned whether they were still worthy of all of the perks they get, because those perks come with a responsibility to be better than they have been.
He isn't a hypocrite; he's just a fan that wants a team to earn its accolades.
