Trade Cory Schneider.
Lets face it, Luongo's trade market isn't strong. He is older, with a very large contract. Not to many teams can take that on, and no one is willing to take it on and give up an asset. If Luongo gets traded, the Canucks get nothing in return and do not improve.
Luongo is also the better goalie. He has been one of the top 5 goalies in the league since he has come into the league, and has continued to play stellar. He is off to an amazing start, and has proven he can be a number one goalie, handle the pressure and succeed.
Schneider on the other hand has played 72 games over 5 seasons, all as a backup. He never starts the big games, and has never had to deal with pressure. In fact, he was dubbed starter this year, and played terrible to the tune of a .897 SV% and has been replaced by Luongo.
Dealing Schneider will also fill the Canucks other holes. He is 26 years old with a lot of potential, teams with goaltending issues would pay a small fortune for him! Unlike if you trade Luongo, you could solve your issues of depth up front, and put you in a position to win a cup this year.
Luo is better right now, and Cory fetches you more.

It's pretty obvious to me that if any goalie will be traded it will be Luongo and not Schneider. And the way Luongo is playing right now, you simply cannot trade him.
So I contend that the Canucks should keep both goalies and deal Luongo in the offseason.
By trading Schneider you run the risk of losing, what the team believes, to be their future #1 goalie. A young goaltender signed up to a team friendly deal. I don't see the value in that. What happens if Luongo goes down to injury this season? What happens when Luongo once again cracks under pressure in the playoffs? Who do the Canucks turn to?
Short term it makes sense to keep both guys. The team has two #1 goalies at their disposal. Every team would love to have that problem.
Long term it makes sense to move Luongo in the offseason. Like you've stated, Luongo is getting older and carries a large contract. Why trade the young guy and tie your future to an aging goaltender with a bloated contract? That's not conducive to building a winning franchise.
Schneider is the goalie of the future in Vancouver. You keep him and ride the hot goaltender as far as he takes you this season. Its the most sensible solution.

Cory Schneider is not on a team friendly deal. His cap hit of $4 million is one of the highest for any goalie in the league (top 15) and being paid as a star goalie. His deal is also for only 2 more years after this season, before he becomes a UFA, and will demand even more. This for a guy who has never played more than 33 games a year
You cannot carry both all year. Not only for the financial burden of paying of $10.2 million for two goalies, and a $9.3 million cap hit, but because of the distractions. After every game, all the media go straight to the Canucks to find out what is happening with the goaltending situation, who is starting next, what the latest rumour is, is there any tension between the goalies, and break down the latest performance. The distraction has grown too big
Plus you risk the chance of pissing Cory off, keeping him as a backup another year. He wants to start, and his agent has even come out saying something needs to be done with either him or Luongo, now!
Plus this weakens the team. You can't play both guys at once, and in a short season a backup may only play 5 games. You are wasting assets. It's best to trade the one who will fetch you the most
JimJ77 Can't make it up said 02/05, 12:30 PM
Cory Schneider's deal is much cap friendlier than Luongo's. Lets be real about it. The reason why the Canucks gave Schneider a 3 year $12 million deal was because they view him as their #1 goaltender of the future, and based on his skill level they are right.
Distractions? This goalie controversy is all too familiar to me as a Bruins fan. I go back to the 2010-11 season when Rask started the season before and Thomas took control over the #1 goalie duties. The young guy going into the season as the starter and the old guy with a bloated contract outplays him and picks up the majority of the starts. How'd that distraction affect the Bruins? Oh yeah, they won the freaking cup.
And how have these distractions affected the teams play so far? It hasn't, so you can take that crap and sell it to someone else.
Schneider hasn't made a big deal about it and no one from the team to the coaching staff views it as an issue.
This isn't about hurt feelings or making someone happy. Its about winning hockey games, and Vancouver is better off with both guys this season. You worry about moving Luongo in the offseason and worry about winning hockey games in the present.
Argos. said 02/05, 09:59 PM
Cory's deal is not team friendly in any way. He is being paid to be a starter, and right now isn't. You can't have two starters.
This is nothing like the Bruins situation. First off, Rask was only 23 and was no where close to becoming a UFA, and had no leverage, and was earning only $1 million. He did not have to start. Tim Thomas was also not on a long-term deal. In this situation, Cory wants to start, and his agent has so much as to say that he needs to start now. He has leverage, being a UFA in a few short years. Luongo also has a longer history of being one of the leagues best than Thomas did, and has a long-term deal.
If Gillis did not come out and say they were shopping Luongo, and if he hadn't talked about it all year, and if Luongo didn't talk about discussing trades with the Canucks all off-season, then keeping them would be no problem. But it is now.
If it is about winning games, then it is best to address the needs of the Canucks. If they trade Cory, they can get a good package of players to help this team immediately and make another cup run. Cory can't help this team on the bench, and you wont get anything for Luo.
JimJ77 Can't make it up said 02/06, 11:29 AM
You say this is nothing like the Bruins situation because Rask was young and no where close to being a UFA. You just described Schneider, who's 26 and has a 3 year deal.
You say Thomas wasn't on a long term deal, but Thomas had 3 years $14 mil left on his deal. Also Rask wanted to start. He was the starter the season before and led the NHL in GAA and Save %.
As a matter of fact, Rask was pretty open about wanting to start and openly complained about his lack of playing time, which caused quite a stir in Boston. It also caused, wait for it...A goalie controversy.
So in actuality, the two situations are identical.
If you think Vancouver should trade a goalie then you have the wrong one. Luongo is the guy to go not Schneider. And the reason I say that is because Schneider is the goalie of the future. You don't trade your goalie of the future. Its idiotic. I couldn't imagine what the Bruins would look like now if they had traded Rask while Thomas was here.
The only reason why Vancouver should keep Luongo THIS season is because he's playing out of his mind and they need to ride the hot guy in a shortened season. But he needs to go eventually while Schneider should stay.

I think the Cannots finish the year with both Goalies still in the fold. If that happens watch Cory demand a trade at years end

Looks like he is making waves already. His agent today said Schneids has to play... but didn't say where.
As for the TD, both good choices. I've actually said both in the past few months. Before the season started I said trade Schneids. Once it started, I said keep both and trade one at the end of the year. I like the picks, lets see the arguments!

I'd be tempted to trade Luongo immediately. I'm not sure if he'll be able to maintain his trade-value after the playoffs.

lou's value is plummeting all the time. bite the bullet and move him now while he's playing well if you can get anything of value. otherwise package him up with a player and get some kind of help

I wouldn't say that at all. He's put up better numbers this year and has kept his team in every game he's played (or won them). He's got a 1.53 GAA so far this year, which is actually HALF of Schneiders.

i mean over a full season. right now his value is high due to him playing out of his mind good right now. i can't see him doing it for a full season. and if he has playoff demons again its going to make him worth next to nothing.

I like both arguments, but like Argos' argument a touch better. I have issues with both sides and can still see both sides' point.
If this is still tied tomorrow, I will tap Yoda to be the tie breaker for the tourney.
