Let's get this part over with first.
The kid has got some mad skills. The kid can hit. The kid has speed. The kid Will Probably have a great career.
However, at what point is a debut past the cutoff for the mid-summer classic?
I remember Bryce Harper going through the same thing his rookie year because he had not been with the club long enough and he debuted in late April. If he had not been around long enough, Puig certainly has not.
While I agree that Puig is tearing the cover off the ball, I say that he has not been in the majors long enough to earn a spot on the roster.
If the fans vote him in and then the next sensation comes along let's say in Mid-June what's going to happen then?
Chris Johnson of the Atlanta Braves leads all 3rd basemen in the NL in BA and mutitple hit games and his name is no where to be found in any discussion for the final vote. Why? Because he does not have enough PA's to be listed among the stat leaders of the league. He is about 10 plate appearances shy of the qualifying total.
However, he has 130 more PA's than Puig has. I'm not saying CJ should be on the ballot, I'm just saying Puig should not.

You can be an all star for..
..being on a bad team and the rules saying one of you has to go
..simply having a familiar name; many former greats make it past there prime
..being Asian: having a whole continent vote for you
You can not be considered because you played too recently or you play in a small market
Lets not act like Puig making it ruins the credibility of the game. He may tail off as the season goes, so could anyone who makes it. At the end of the year you could look at anyone on the teams roster and be like "he was a 2013 all-star, so and so was way better that year". Who knows where he ends up, but we arent naming him to the all decade team. Right now hes as hot as anyone and were naming him to something happening now
If your going to let the fans pick the team: shouldnt it have players the fans want? Why should he be on the final ballet...how about because he wasnt even listed on the original and still raked in 800,000 + write in votes.Dont vote him for MVP or any award if you dont think he played long enough, but why would you not showcase one of the brightest young stars on the main stage: especially in a time when the league needs a new image

I figured that part of the argument against my opinion would be the old adage of "so and so got spurned by so and so this year" as a result of each of the coaches selecting who they want as non starters and of course by the popularity that IS the voting process by the fans. I considered that. And each year we get those comments from those that though, Joe Q Public is having a much better year than John Q Popular. Does not matter.
Hanley Ramirez , on the same team, is doing BETTER than Puig and his name was not even considered. Why?
Just because this guy's background story of another sensational "Escape from Cuba" he should automatically be inserted into the ASG? No
Just because he had a great first month? No
Just because he is another great find by the great scout Brito? No
What time line will the next great sensation be considered; the week before the ASG?
Again, I know he is a young gun the Dodgers Fans love to watch. But give it time, and we've seen it with All ball players, Major League pitchers WILL find the holes in his batting approach and will start getting him out on a more regular basis.
Puig is no Ted Williams at this point.
:CubanMissile: said 07/11, 07:37 PM
No Ted Williams? Nobody is saying he is. He doesnt have to be: there have been many one and done all stars. There are no requirements for the all star game. Managers can select whoever they want, and so can the fans.
Does Puig give the team a good chance to win? YES
Will he draw more interest in the game? YES
Since he's been here has he shown to be one of the best players? YES
There is a reason baseball is lagging behind now: its because people want to keep it in some fantasy world where there is some sacred code. Its the all star game. Name the last 3 fan final vote getter's off the top of your head: or think of what pitcher came in after the starter the last two years. Its something people talk about for a week and then only remember when they look at a guys career summery online or baseball card if people still do that. We arent crowning someone a champion or naming him the greatest ever.
If i am a fan i want to see a show: and want my side of the league to win. Maybe in 3 weeks he wont be playing like one of the best: but lets live in the now because we cant predict the future and realize right now at least he is legit. Nothing wrong with him being considered

This TD has been overcome by events, however, let's look at the "New Image" you feel Puig brings to the league and to the ASG.
Not only does he fail to recognize a fellow countyman and former 5 time All Star in Luis Gonzalez, he SNUBS him and disrepects him as if he were a common fan. This tells me he does not give a damn about the fans.
Secondly, he IS STILL a rookie and after a collision at home plate with Montero in which he made an out he stared down Montero and made a complete butt of himself.
And IF you wish to see a show, Freeman has outbattled him during the month of July. Freeman has batted .350 with 7 RBIs during that stretch and Puig has Batted .311 with only 3 RBIs.
And btw , Freeman has a HIGHER Fielding % than Puig. So I don't know what everyone is thinking Freddie can't D up. He has more chances and more range than just about any starting 1st baseman in the league. And if you ask his teammates, they will tell you over the course of a season he probably saves at least 70 to 100 throwing errors with his great receiving skills at first.
The game is Better for having voted in Freeman over Puig. 19 million plus agree with me.
USA rocked the vote!
