The College football overtime rules are awful. In overtime, teams start off at the opponent 25 yard line. What it does is it takes away the special teams except for the kicking team, and it makes it easier for offenses to score and are already in field goal range. At least in the NFL, while teams win the coin toss and usually drive down the field to win, the special teams plays a role in overtime. While each team does get the ball in overtime in college, it does takes away some strategy in the game. College Football needs to make overtime more harder than easier.

You made my point for me.. in college both teams get the ball .. so if they do start from the 25 and score a FG.. they other team also starts at the 25 so there is no disadvantage.. but in the NFL most OTs are ended by the team that wins the coin toss.. either by a long run, pass, or kick return.. how is the fun (unless your team wins).. and also in college there is more blocked kicks.. so a FG isnt always a sure thing...

Heres what I would do with the ovetime in both college and the NFL.

Both teams will get the ball. There will be no game clock, which means no ties and someone win. Each team will have 2 timeouts plus a coach's challange, and all plays will be subject to review form the replay officals upstairs. Overtime starts with the kickoff at the 30 yard line. And if the score is tied after each team gets the ball, then the team that score next will win.

It doesnt matter what you would do with the rules.. its is the rules good or bad.. and its good.. for the reasons i stated before AND because if the other team does get a FG then the other team can get a W with a TD... And you say it takes away from the strategy.. well if you get ball first you gotta decide to go for a FG and have the risk of givin up a TD.. OR stop after 2nd down so you dont risk a INT.. isnt that strategy...

We should change the rules then if that is the case. Look the overtime in college football is not perfect, but neither is the NFL's overtime. I'm suggesting that the NCAA should think about tweaking the overtime to have all aspects of the game be used. Teams starting at the opponent 25 yard line is absure. Overtime in both college and the NFL need to be tweak so that not only will both teams get the ball, but also all aspects of the game be used.

i like the college system but there should be kickoffs instead of an automatic ball placement.

- Both teams get a shot

- Rules Change AFTER 2 Overtimes

- Only get 1 Overtime Time-Out

- FG's aren't always good in these scenarios

Jets I agree with you. But because of the controversy of game times, there is no chance that would ever happen

No vote, but a comment...
Scrap this farce you call overtime in college (and high school), and do it like the NFL.
What's WRONG with ties in college football?? Everybody wants this P.C. **** in sport...

while i do agree with guthrie. but i think most overtime games in the nfl end on a field goal. but still vote to guthrie.

What's the point of a coaches challenge if every play if reviewable upstairs?

October 20, 2007  08:55 PM ET

Idk there's still strategy in college ot, vote to guthrie

College rules but kick off !

I like the jet's idea...Keep it like it is, but add the extra element of haveing to go the whole field. It'll make it longer, but it'll more fair for those teams that plod down the field and don't hit home runs.

I love college overtime, but I'd like to see some tweaks as well.

The guaranteed chance for both teams to get a shot is what sets it apart from the pros.

Rather than starting at the 25 (well within the range for most college place-kickers), how about starting the offense at the 30- or 35?

At the 25, the defense needs to come up with sack or a run-loss to move the offense back. But starting the offense further back, it forces them to move into a kicker's comfort range. No more (almost) guaranteed FG's.
