Pete Rose deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. Anybody who is the leader in one of the biggest catagory in baseball (hits) should be in the Hall of Fame. he had over 4,000 hits. Just because he bet on baseball, does not mean that his actions outside of the baseball field should affect him getting into the Hall of Fame.

Pete Rose did have impressive numbers and his restaurant makes a great burger. BUT the hall of fame is reserved for players that truly exemplified the sport of baseball.
I think we can all agree Mr. Rose hurt and tarnished the game. Putting Pete Rose in the same league with true leaders of the sport would only diminish and taint the accomplishments of those already inducted.

Pete Rose totally deserves to be in the Hall of Fame because of his accomplishments. If you were to dig deep into peoples records and records I bet you could find at least a handful of people already in the hall of Fame that have done something bad off the field. i bet some of them have even bet on baseball, but have not got caught. THough he tarnished the game, he has not tarnished his baseball hits record. It is not like he took steroids, he got the hits record fair and square.

Pete Rose should not be allowed in the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame because he admittedly bet on baseball games.

Some people may think that since he confessed, baseball should forgive him and let him enter Cooperstown.

I appreciate Rose confessing to his mistake and baseball should provide general forgiveness. However wiping the slate clean, so to speak, to provide hall membership is a definite mistake.

If that happens, baseball is opening itself up to all kinds of potential messes including the bad of gambling. Baseball has enough problems now with the steroid controversy and doesn't need any additional ones.

I sense baseball is holding a firm line on this Pete Rose hall issue. Let's hope that baseball keeps the rope tight.

I gaurantee you that Barry Bonds will go in to the Hall Of Fame. We all know that he took steroids. Why would Bonds be able to be in the Hall of Fame and not be called a cheater.

Also think about why they banned the use of steroids. They had to know that someone was using steroids and that affected how good they were. I gaurentee you that there are players in the Hall of Fame that have used steroids.Should they be removed because they used steroids. Shoud peterose not be allowed in becausehe bet

Ultimately, this is the Baseball Hall of Fame. Not Hall of the Best. Not Hall of the Toughest Competitors. There are many other places, besides the Hall of Fame, to learn of baseball???s history and greatest players. No one has suggested removing Pete Rose???s records from the record books. He will always be an integral part of the Big Red Machine and that rare Phillies championship. BUT BY NO MEANS IS HE A HALL OF FAMER!!!

His accomplishments on the field justify him being in. Problem is he broke the #1 rule - no gambling on baseball - that is enough for him not to be in.

October 31, 2007  11:12 AM ET

That's the only argument against...right there...he broke the rule about betting...

as far as the hall being reserved for players that truly exemplified the sport of baseball....don't know what that even means...if it's what I think it means, there are a whole lot worse people in the HOF than a guy who bet on his own team....

October 31, 2007  11:13 AM ET

Everyone that plays baseball, knows that you dont bet on baseball

October 31, 2007  11:17 AM ET

It is the first thing MLB reminds all players during spring training and every single club house has a big sign with the rule on it posted for everyone to see.

There is no excuse.

October 31, 2007  11:17 AM ET

I say put Pete Rose in the Hall of Fame.....Just so I don't have to hear about it anymore.

October 31, 2007  11:23 AM ET

I agree Tito put it to rest.I Rose in.

If we are going to go that route, and accept that kind of reasoning, then the time is long overdue to induct Shoeless Joe Jackson into the Baseball Hall of Fame. After all, Shoeless Joe had a lifetime batting average more than 50 points higher than that of Pete Rose -- and 12 points higher than that of Ted Williams. Where Williams' highest batting average was .406, Shoeless Joe Jackson hit .408. And he is still not in Cooperstown.

yeah, and there's really nothing that shows Jackson threw the game...he did VERY well in the series...

October 31, 2007  11:51 AM ET

the man knew what he was doing when he gambled. He wasn't stupid, he defied thinking he was above the rules. AND NO ONE is above the game.
HOF is an honor bestowed by the game, if you have no respect for the game, the game shouldn't have respect for you. Sorry Rose..

October 31, 2007  12:00 PM ET

Rose gambled on baseball. Shoeless Joe isn't in, so neither should Rose be.

'Rose gambled on baseball. Shoeless Joe isn't in, so neither should Rose be.'

If you believe Shoeless Joe did what he was accused of, then what Pete Rose did and what Shoeless Joe did are hardly the same thing...

Rose bet on his team to win...

If you believe Shoeless Joe is truly guilty, then HE purposely helped throw games...

If Jackson is guilty, then what he did was WAY worse...

Not sure you can equate

October 31, 2007  12:16 PM ET

This again?
Uh, no.
He gambled on games that he managed...say something about that. How can you reconcile that with the Hall? you can't.

October 31, 2007  12:23 PM ET

Jim - All I was saying was that gambling got them thrown out of baseball. I'm not judging Shoeless Joe.
Gambling was the root of both situations, so yes, they do equate.
We only know Rose bet on his own team to win because he says so. Apparently, you believe him. However, he lied about it for 15 years, so why wouldn't he be lying about that also?

Pete Rose is the Hall Of Fame.
Without him it is just a building.

I'm struggling to come up with how to respond to this. Right now it's between "asinine" and "irrelevant."

October 31, 2007  12:54 PM ET

I only believe that Rose didn't bet against his own team...there is nothing showing other-wise....

One could argue that on the games he didn't bet on HIS team, that it was kind of like betting AGAINST his team.... I mean, if I was a bookie, and Rose was always betting on his team, then all of a sudden he DIDN'T, I'd wonder...but still, no proof saying he bet against his team then went out and managed to lose...

If you believe Jackson was guilty, then he purposely didn't play as well as he should and that had a direct affect on the outcome of games and, ultimately, the series...in other words, he played to lose, wheras Rose bet on his team to WIN...
