Women R US Inaugural Throwdown Tournamet Round 1-Should Major League Baseball eventually institue instant replay?

Major League GMs overwhelmingly voted Tuesday 25-5 to approve a proposal to use video replays on a limited basis, such as helping umpires determine if potential home run balls landed fair or foul, if they cleared the wall, and if they were interferred with by fans.

THIS IS A GOOD THING PEOPLE!

The biggest opposition to its adaptation is the commisioner himself, God Selig. However, a VAST MAJORITY OF UMPIRES ARE IN FAVOR OF REPLAY! They dont want to walk off the field knowing they may have cost a team the opportunity to win. "We are not too thin-skinned to say, help us get it right.", said Brian Gorman, a 16-year vet ump.

Replays would be handled much as they are in the NHL, where they review goals scored by video replay.

Baseball officials would make their reviews from a central location up in a booth.

Evidence this is necessary? Witness this years playoffs when umps had difficulty determing home run calls in Colorado and Cleveland.

The NBA even uses it in determining buzzer beating shots. Tennis uses it for line calls, as does rugby. College football is even ahead of their curve, using replay.

Selig's take: "Its the human element, part of the game."

But thats not entirely true Cass. This isnt about determining whether a home run is a homerun or not. Its much more than that.
So here is the start of my argument against instant replay (for now).
Its come to this. The last and oldest of the 4 major league sports resorting to technology to determine the outcome of the game.
Now, dont get me wrong, I love instant replay in the NFL. Certainly I love
it when it goes my teams way. The problem I have is that the way they want to use it in MLB is what bothers me. In football, for the most part,
its a coaches challenge that brings on the instant replay. I mean yes, there are times that the replay is reviewed without a coaches challenge. But. thats not what they proposed in MLB. In the NHL, its used only to see if the puck crossed the goal line. In the NBA, its used only to see if someone got a shot off before time ran out. I hate the fact that the oldest and what most of us perceive to be the most beloved of the major league sports is now taking away the human factor.

What is your problem with the way they want to use it in major league baseball? Its only for home runs and foul balls, certainly similiar to NBA in buzzer beaters and NHL in goal or not. So whats the problem?

Does the NBA or NHL need a coaches challenge to initiate a replay? NO! It works beautifully in those sports and MLB is way behind the curve in not having done this, THANKS TO ONE PERSON: Abner Doubledays wannabe clone, MY WORD IS GOD SELIG!

They are NOT taking away the human factor, and neither is the rest of pro sports that have replay. 98% of the time spent on these sports is not reviewed during the game. The 2% that is GETS THINGS RIGHT!

Nobody should lose a game cuz of an ump missed HR call. NOBODY!

How many games are won or lost because of a bad HR or foul ball call?Far many more are lost or won at home plate. The way the MLB wants the replay used is to have a direct feed to a panel that will monitor the entire game. The officials will review any and all questionable "ball" plays - i.e. fair, foul, HR, Not a HR etc. This was how replay started in football. Only the officials could call for a replay. Baseball games can be notoriously long as it is. Do we want a replay on every ball that gets hit down the 3rd base line and ruled fair or foul by the 3rd base umpire to cause the game to be halted while a panel of judges reviews it?
The MLB GMS answer to that is to shorten the game because of the replay, they would limit the times a batter could step out of the box or limit how many times the pitcher could walk off the mound, limit the visits to the mound and limit how many people could join in on those visits. Now, suppose they institute the NFL Challenge theory. What the heck would be the penalty for a challenge? Youk hits a line drive right field, Girardi challenges and loses. Whats the penalty? Jeter walks to the plate in the next inn. down 0-1 before taking a swing?

The one game that is lost should have been reviewed by simple technology available today that would take minutes out of a game to MAKE THINGS RIGHT.

You are completely wrong about how they plan on using replay in baseball. Go to LATIMES.com and read Kevin Baxter's column and you will find it is going to be A VERY LIMITED REPLAY.

There have been ZERO discussions to make MLB replay something the managers have to challenge. Read the L.A. Times article cuz it appears you are just guessing as to what the general managers voted 25-5 in favor of and what 90% of the umpires are in favor of.

I dont doubt what the original intent is. Its the progression that scares me. Just like in football. Again, thats why it was nixed for so long after it was first implemented. whats to stop them from instituting a balls and strikes replay. Lets face it FAR more arguments are made at the plate about a strike 3 call than a HR off the Pesky Pole. Or a manager halting a game for a replay on a check swing? These are the human aspects and to take them away is doing a huge disservice to the game of baseball. Right now home plate is off limits, but for how long? What about stolen bases? Close calls at 1st?
Maybe I havent heard enough yet to be all for this yet but it seems to me that first and foremost a) taking all the human aspect out of baseball takes alot or ANY of the excitement out of what tends to be for the most part a fairly sedate game to begin with, and b) I dont think its been really well thought out by the GM' and c) whats to stop the progression to where the NFL is today? Do we really want the day when we're challenging strike 3 calls twice an inning?

I just think the replay idea needs a whole lot more work before they even begin to test it. Just my humble opinion.

Great first argument Kp, i will be back in 20 mins after my lunch break to submit my second.

I am in favor of a limited re-play system. Limits should be placed for home run, fair or foul balls only. "Balls and strikes" and "safe or out " should be left as is. Baseball, though I really love the sport, is long enough as is and the umpire who has a wider or taller strike zone is part of the game and should be not only accepted but revered. I don't think the technology is good enough to police the strike zone. If it did, I don't think I would like it much.

Actually, it is about determining if a homerun is out of the park or not. Its a great thing. And should certainly be instituted.

Instant replay was the best thing to happen to the NFL. And remember the call at the plate for the Rockies that got them into the post season. that was a terrible call.

HELLO PEOPLE! This is not about fing with the strike zone, read my first argument.

Mens R Us is a MUCH better group.

Report Offensive Comment

Don't watch Baseball, but instant replay will make it an honest game, vote to cass.

Report Offensive Comment

instant replay would be pointless because it would only be used maybe 1 time per DAY (not game) if the strike zone is not being part of the replay system. Thre isnt that many close calls just hr's and the occasional trap

Leave it to LO to chime in against me, not having waited for all three arguments. Nice and sloppy LO.

and gruden, beerboy, eaglehater, milkyboy didnt do anything wrong in your eyes?

you are a hipocrate and a joke

Report Offensive Comment

Using it to determine HR's and stuff like whether a guy actually touched home plate(Holliday) is good for the game.

I'm fine with this as long as they dont implement it for balls and strikes.

Report Offensive Comment

Cass is right, read first.
So far, the League GM's have not indicated that Home Plate calls would be part of this version of their instant replay suggestion. Nor did I say it was.

Yet.

Report Offensive Comment

MLB should have the same opportunity the NFL has. That is to get it right for the good of the game. How can you watch something that is wrong. And you got the truth right in front of you.

Report Offensive Comment

i did read first and i am allowed under the constitution of the united states to have my own opinion...i dont get how you two dont get that. im not judgeing either side im stating my comment which happens to fall in the comment box

Report Offensive Comment

I know that KpKahder. I read the arguments. I saw the report on ESPN. I'm only saying that it would be beneficial to the game if instant replay would be used on plays at the plate that were extremely close. I KNOW that that is not part of the idea yet. I KNOW that HR's are the only thing being discussed so far.

LO and MAC,.
I was responding to the comment made about balls and strikes being replayed, by someone else, not either of you. Sorry if you thought I directed that at you.
