This is a tough one because of the caliber of both pitchers. I am choosing Beckett (and not because Im a sox fan or that they won the world series).
On Stats, Sabathia looks dominant - more innings pitched, more strikeouts, less walks, more complete games, lower ERA.
Beckett however has less hits, less HR. less earned runs, less runs, less batters hit, less runs in general. And most importantly, he's the only 20 game winner.

Your reasoning is horrible. He has less hits, runs, hr's and earned runs. Because, HE PITCHED LESS INNINGS. Are you serious. I think it is a tough battle. But, going off the regular season (people voting keep that in mind). Sabathia was more dominant in every category except wins. That is a very overrated stat. Sabathia can't make his guys get hits and score runs. Plus his closer was very erratic and beckett's closer is the man. So sabathia had that going against him as well, when it came to getting the w's.

My reasoning is horrible? It took Sabathia 34 games to get 19 wins and it took Beckett 30 games to get 20 wins. How is my reasoning so horrible again? Sabathia pitched 40 innings more than Beckett and yet
the ratios were .98 hits per inning for CC and .95 hits per inning for JB.
Granted thats not the best stat yet. CC had 238 hits 94runs 86 earned runs. Beckett had 189 hits 76 runs 73 earned runs. . Look at the runs vs the EARNED runs. That tells you about clutch playing and getting off the field with men in scoring position. I will be the first to admit that CC is a dynamic pitcher but he isnt the clutch pitcher that Josh Beckett is. Look at the 7 losses CC had. Look at the losses Beckett had.
Even Carmona is probably in the running for the award but it will be between Beckett and Sabathia and that one extra win in less starts will be the deciding factor. They are certainly neck and neck. But Beckett is the clutch pitcher. That one extra win will count for more than you think.

Sorry, I had family to attend to last night and work today. I agree their numbers are almost identical. But, sabathis offered his team 41 more innings, which anyone who is a fan of a team with a horrible rotation realizes your team needs every inning possible to keep from taxing the bullpen to early in the season. Also, the Indians would have been hard pressed to make the playoffs without a leader like sabathia. Beckett really didn't bring that level of his game till the postseason(unbelievable, though). Even the sports guy(espn), a huge homer for the sox, did not have beckett on his 20 most important players in the postseason column and had cc at number 2. CC's value in the regular season to that team was huge. The red sox are chalkfull of leader, but the indians are still young and cc stepped up.

How can you say the Indians have such a horrible rotation? The Indians had two top 5 pitchers in Sabathia and Carmona - Both with 19 wins! Now maybe the bullpen wasnt as strong as the Sox but bullpen doesnt count in Cy Young votes. The indians were tied for the best record in Baseball and if it wasnt for the head to head decider, the ALCS could just as easily been played in Cleveland. The fact is it took Josh less starts to get 20 wins. Carmona and Sabathia had 4 more starts and still didnt get to 20. Whether you want to believe it or not, Wins are a major voting point in the Cy Young. As for the Sports Guy - who cares who he had on the 20 most important people in the post season? Post Season doesnt count and if it DID, we wouldnt be having this TD because Becket wiped the BOARD with his starts.
I rest my case.
I think Beckett gets the award.

I wasn't calling their rotation, just staing the innings are extremely important to keeping a team in the hunt(as a ranger fan, our bullpen always detoriated when we were hanging cause our starters sucked. My case with the 20 most important, is that the season had many believing sabathia's importance to the indians was greater than becket's, which would have been based on regular season. Not to mention in the regular season, cc had to face the likes of verlander and santana alot because of divisional play. beckett had to face, who? wang is so overrated as shown in the postseason, halladay was hurt. Sabathia had to earn every win against those aces. All the pressure was on him.

Do you and Cassidy sit around and think up the most obvious TD's? First she had the AFC is more dominate then you run Beckett against CC, the postseason pretty much answered this question.

November 8, 2007  06:04 PM ET

Post Season doesnt count.
Reg season is the criteria as far as I know isnt it?

November 8, 2007  06:06 PM ET

The votes are turned in before the postseason starts.

November 8, 2007  06:07 PM ET

I agree I think beckett is sick and his postseason gave me a man crush, I think. But based on regular season numbers and this guys horribly thought out arguement. CC was the man.

November 8, 2007  06:08 PM ET

He pitched less innings, BUT GOT MORE WINS! Somebody please pass Beckett the Cy Young. Vote to Beckett's biggest fan.

November 8, 2007  06:09 PM ET

nick you are throwing down against a female. show some respect dude.

November 8, 2007  06:10 PM ET

You seriously think that wins is the most important stat for a pitcher. They can't control the bullpen or the offense. Oh! well you are a steelers fan and overrated as well. They lost to the cardinals and broncos, we lost to the pats. What are those two teams records? I can't remember,

November 8, 2007  06:12 PM ET

Respect for what, I don't know it's a female or really care. If they want to throw out crap that is not my fault. I don't reseach who is throwing down, or really even know if you people are telling the truth about your gender as it is.

November 8, 2007  06:13 PM ET

LOL Beckett
LOL Carsten Charles Sabathia.

November 8, 2007  06:13 PM ET

Its CC NO doubt about it.

November 8, 2007  06:15 PM ET

"Beckett however has less hits, less HR. less earned runs, less runs, less batters hit, less runs in general."

Beckett was sort of injured so that means he will have less of all these things. Next time use ERA WHIP HR/9.

November 8, 2007  06:16 PM ET

"He pitched less innings, BUT GOT MORE WINS! Somebody please pass Beckett the Cy Young. Vote to Beckett's biggest fan."

Would it mean anything if I said he had 6.5 runs per game? hard to lose.

November 8, 2007  06:30 PM ET

I dont care if the sox scored 25 runs a game, how many times did they have the runs on the table to win and DiceK or Wakefield lost the game???

November 8, 2007  06:32 PM ET

Go easy on the girl?

Why? I am not being mean here, but you are the one saying more girls need to be on here, and whatnot. Everyone is a person...

November 8, 2007  06:32 PM ET

Ummmm, not many? Thats why they had 15 wins?

Point is, W/L is overrated. Go by the other stats and Sabathia takes it.

November 8, 2007  06:36 PM ET

W/L is overrated.
You know who was statistically the best pitcher of last year? Johan Santana. Name another pitcher in the top 6 of all 5 major pitching catagories.

November 8, 2007  06:40 PM ET

I never asked to be "gone easy on" . Im looking for a serious debate on the issue, no namecalling or other insults.
I dont do it to others, I expect the same respect.,
Has nothing to do with me being a woman.
It has to do with the debate - a CIVILIZED debate.
Thankyou
my job is done here.
I'll collect my parting gifts on my way out.

November 8, 2007  06:52 PM ET

I didnt say go easy on her I said dont disrespect her by saying her reasoning is horrible in your first argument then saying she throws out crap in the comments.

November 8, 2007  07:23 PM ET

Nick, you still there or are you on google?

November 8, 2007  07:24 PM ET

The point is "Capone" that the W/L IS taken into consideration. Probably one of the BIGGEST considerations. Its just something ya live with.
