Vikings Wide Receiver Troy Williamson was docked his game check for missing a game to attend his grandmother's funeral. She raised him. THIS IS WRONG!

His grandmother raised him from a baby so its like his mother in every sense.

Major League Baseball has a bereavement policy where in this exact same situation the player is allowed a 3-5 day bereavement leave PAID and the team is allowed to fill his roster spot with a guy from Triple A.

The Vikings could of got a WR from their practice squad for that game he missed and been no worse for wear as Troy isnt even one of the games top flight receivers.

To take away his paycheck is insulting and makes the Vikings and the NFL, who have NO BEREAVEMENT POLICY look utterly insensitive.

Coach Brian Childress said he withheld Troy's paycheck on "business principles." If that wasnt enough, coach cold-hearted said "He was not excused to attend this funeral."

My goodness, does Fannation side with coach Childress or common decency?

MLB can afford to have a bereavement policy, the NFL can't. First, there are more than ten times as many games per season in baseball. Second, each team has an elaborate farm system, and baseball strategy is pretty universal, so plugging a guy in is simple and doesn't have a huge effect on the team.

The reason this is a "business decision" for the Vikes is that they're concerned about the precedent. It doesn't matter that Williamson isn't terribly crucial to their game plan; if AD suddenly had to skip out on a game after preparing all week to have them, no matter how serious the reason, it would mess up the team. But if there are no consequences for Williamson, there can't be for Peterson.

When you take a job, you have to understand the terms for taking time off. I'm a temp, and I understand that if I miss work, I don't get paid, whether I have a hangover or pneumonia. I weigh that against how important it is for me to not be at work, and make my choice. That's the entire purpose of consequences.

And the consequence is appropriate. You didn't show up for this game, you don't get paid for this game.

First of all, going to a funeral of a beloved family member isnt SKIPPING OUT! If AD left and it wasnt for a DAMN good reason, he would be justifiably docked his check and surely fined by the team and maybe even the league.

BUT THIS IS DIFFERENT! The NFL cant even take care of its former players who are struggling with debilitating post-career issues and now this? The NFL needs to find the money, even if it has to come out of the profit kitty cuz this is just beyond shameful.

Troy knew he would miss the check and decided to attend the funeral, but him knowing in advance he wouldnt get paid isnt the point. The point is there should be a policy that allows these players paid funeral leave ONLY if they miss a game. Most funerals wouldnt fall so close to Sunday to impact a players having to decide to do one or the other.

The NFL's treatment of retired players is VERY wrong. But that's not what we're talking about, so why bring it up?

The question is, is it WRONG for the Vikings to have docked Williamson's pay? And no, the policy had been established, Williamson was told what the consequence would be if he didn't play, and he made his choice.

The problem is that we're dealing with legalese here; there's no other way to deal with pay-related matters. And that means you can't say things like "without a damn good reason," because where do you draw the line? Seeing a dying relative, or going to a funeral, are really the only other excuses I can think of that are even debateable. So... is it excusable to miss a game for a funeral of a second cousin? A childhood friend? A grandparent? A sibling? A spouse? Where does that line get drawn?

I think it's best that there isn't an NFL policy about it, enabling each team to take its own stance, which allows for extenuating circumstances.

And again, the fine is fairly light. It's the same penalty you get if you hit a player too hard. It's at the "we understand why you did it, but we have to keep these things in check" level.

I bring it up because there is a precedent set by the NFL to make everything a business decision, all about what is best profitably for the league before the players best interests are taken into account, and if you dont take care of your players, you wont have a league worth a damn.

It was WRONG in principal, but there wasnt enough space in the TD title to fit the word principal in, sorry.

His grandma raised him, taught him how to cook and drive Dan. Its obvious this was his mom in every sense. Look at Larry B's copy/pasted article in the comments. Of course a second cousin isnt debatable, so why bring it up? This is done AS A TEAM POLICY. The Vikings could of paid him if they wanted to cuz it was basically his MOM. No bad precedents would have been set giving him his check.

What if it was a second cousin who was basically his brother? You can't leave that kind of fuzziness open - everything must be set in stone if you're going to have a policy.

I hate to break it to you, but this is the world we live in: everything IS a business decision. If the NFL decides to institute a bereavement policy, that's a business decision, and it would be done because the financial risks of not having one (fan disapproval, player strikes) are too great.
Given that Williamson's response was "I don't care if they would have [taken] my pay for the rest of the year, I was going home. It wouldn't have mattered to me," I'd have to say he's not irate about the decision. He'll appeal to the NFLPA, of course. Who wouldn't? I've appealed parking tickets that were clearly my fault, because I thought there was a small chance I'd get my money back. Essentially, that's a business decision too.
And I have to take issue with your saying "if you dont take care of your players, you wont have a league worth a damn." The NFL takes pretty darn good care of their current players; it's the retirees that can't get care. And once again, we're not here to talk about them.

Well, Cassidy is wrong on all the details, but it was cold.

1. His grandmother didn't raise him. She lived in the house with his parents when he was growing up.
2. No, they could not have called a receiver up from the practice squad, because that would have meant they had to take someone off the roster.
3. Childress actually said "We sat down and talked on it before he left. ... He had to do what he had to do. Everybody handles that differently. [Williamson] had to do what his family situation called for."
4. Childress did not say "He was not excused to attend this funeral". He actually said, when asked if Williamson was excused, "Its not a matter of being excused"
5. Childress also said about the decision by team ownership: "Its kind of out of my realm".
6. The decision was by the Vikings ownership, not Childress. Childress has no authority to withhold a player's paycheck.

Bad decision? Of course. Childress' decision. Absolutely not.

I think it all comes down to what day she passed on and what day the funeral was.

If she passed on a Tuesday for example and the funeral was on the next Friday, he could have been at the game.

But, if she passed on a Friday and the funeral was the following Monday, then no.

thing is there is precedence in the NFL for this practice. The reason why the dock the pay is so they don't have each player saying I have this family/medical thing going on and they try to skip the game with pay.

Mike and Mike in the Morning talked about this this morning and Golic explained why the Vikes did this better than I have.

Sorry, I couldn't help voting, there is no argument than could excuse this no class move by the Vikings organization. If I were a season ticket holder, the team would be hearing from me. It was his grandmother!

In high school she was the girl to make me do the holla hoop around the gym. Just to get a peak again.... shes a ten. In high school she was the girl to make me do the holla hoop around the gym. November 9, 2007  01:38 PM ET

If you have the story, why did you get all the details wrong?

November 9, 2007  01:38 PM ET

I still vote for you, more than likely, because nobody could come up with a legitimate argument to make this a good thing.

November 9, 2007  01:38 PM ET

She got it from ESPN

November 9, 2007  01:39 PM ET

She lived in the house with his parents AND WAS THE PARENT according to TROY. He should know who raised him. His parents were not the parental models that his grandmom was and thats why Troy said she raised me.

November 9, 2007  01:39 PM ET

I agree with John. I'll prob vote for you as well because it is really hard to argue for this "policy"

I figured this was an uphill battle, but that doesn't mean I'm wrong.

November 9, 2007  01:44 PM ET

DAN TM did it. nice argument Dan way to represent SKINS NATION....

November 9, 2007  01:46 PM ET

Actually, I believe you're making that up too. I've read 5 articles about this event, and in none of them does Williamson say she was the parent.
