Rules
They must have had at least 35 save opportunities.

A.L East- Jonathan Papelbon
A.L Central- Joe Nathan
A.L West- J.J Putz

N.L East- Billy Wagner
N.L Central- Francisco Cordero
N.L West- T. Saito

Papelbon went 37/40 with a 1.85 ERA and a 1-3 record. He had 84 K in 58 IP. He only walked 15 batters and pitched 59 games. He only let up 30 hits. His WHIP was 0.77.

Nathan went 37/41 with a 1.88 ERA and a 4-2 record. He had 77 K in 71 IP. He pitched 68 games. His WHIP was 1.02. The reason I didn???t choose Jenks was because he blew 6 saves and had an ERA higher than Nathan???s.

Putz went 40/42 in save opportunities with a 1.38 ERA and 82 K in 71.2 IP. His record was 6-1 in 68 games pitched. He only walked 11 batters the whole season. He only let up 37 hits. His WHIP was 0.70.

Wagner went 34/39 with a 2.63 ERA. He had 80 K in 68 IP. He walked 22 batters and had a WHIP of 1.13

Cordero went 44/51 with a 2.98 ERA. He had 86 K in 63 IP. He walked 18 batters and had a WHIP of 1.11.

Saito went 39/43 with a 1.40 ERA and a 2-1 record. He also had 78 K in 64 IP. He only walked 13 batters and pitched 63 games. He only let up 33 hits. His WHIP was 0.72

I disagree with your NL Central pick. It should be Jason Isringhausen instead.

Now, Cordero might have more saves, but Isringhausen beat Cordero in most other categories.

Isringhausen Save Percentage: 94% (32/34)
Cordero Save Percentage: 86% (44/51)

Isringhausen ERA: 2.48
Cordero ERA: 2.98

Isringhausen Batting Average Against: .179
Cordero Batting Average Against: .218

Cordero's Win-Loss Record: 0-4
Isringhausen's Win Loss Record: 4-0

In pretty much every statistical category besides total saves, Isringhausen beat Cordero last year. He's the best closer in the NL Central.

Alright I guess you did not read the rules where it says they must have at least 35 save opportunities, but I will argue it anyway.

Cordero had 12 more saves than Isringhausen, which is a lot and means a lot of wins for a team like the Cardinals or Brewers who did not make the playoffs, but came close.

Also you said that Isringhausen beat Cordero last year. Well also in the title of the throwdown it says Best Closer in each division this season. So last season does not count.

Also Isringhausen walked 10 more batters than Cordero and Cordero has a whopping 32 more K than Isringhausen. So how do you like that for a K to BB ratio.

Isringhausen does have a better BAA, but Cordero's OBA, which is Opponents On base percent is only .3 points lower which is not that much.

Cordero's K/9 is almost 5 points higher than Isringhausens and Cordero's K/BB is almost 3 points higher than Isrighausens.

So my guy has 12 more saves than yours and your guy really is not legal in this throwdown, but I will argue it.

Cordero did more for his team than Isringhausen did by getting those saves. K make a pitcher more dominant.

You got me fair in square on this. I still think Isringhausen's the better closer, but I'll give you the win.

the first thing he said was 35 save opp's and you pull out issy who had 34

November 11, 2007  02:49 PM ET

lol, that's probably exactly why he said that. He knew what was coming.

November 11, 2007  02:53 PM ET

yeah that was a reason, also i do not think just 34 or below opps is enough to contribute enough to a team and is harder to judge him as a closer.

I will continue to argue though and try to do the best i can.

November 11, 2007  02:57 PM ET

I see your point, but consider this: save opps is determined by how the team performs in the first 8 innings.

true

Vote to Jesus.

Even if he did not follow the rules (I don't think anyone else in the Central had 35 save opps), he shows that Isringhausen had a better year than Cordero. It would be something to compare their first half saves to their second half saves. Cordero was horrible in the second half of the season.

And Phillyman, the 2007 season is now known as "last season."

.3 points lower is a lot, IMO.

November 11, 2007  04:00 PM ET

not it isnt if you are talking OBP.

You did not have to forfeit Jesus.

There was 1 other pitcher that had 35 opps or more in the central

November 11, 2007  04:08 PM ET

Dave Weathers? I don't think he's better than Cordero. It'd be very hard to make that argument.

I should've read the rules. You deserved the win.

November 11, 2007  04:54 PM ET

yeah it was weathers

Jose Valverde led the majors in saves and he doesn't get the NL West from either of you? Pssh, no vote.
